Super Meat Boy is my choice. I havent 100% completed it but Ive beaten the main game and a good chunk of the extras. No game has ever made me curse at my screen more than that one

Vanquish, I played it on normal, and even that was still a challenge. I don't think it'd be a good idea to try it on hard.

Er, Gears of war 2 on insane? Though twas easy... I give up on hard games :(
Gear 1 on Insane was harder, just saying.

OT:
Um... CoD2 on Veteran. That was back before bullet penatrion made it easy to mow down multiple enemies at one time.

I've got Mr Minecraft and finished the Cotton Alley dark world on Super Meat Boy. Unfortunately I'm only on 92% for overall dark completion, but after 35+ hours and 7000 odd deaths I just don't have the drive anymore :(

I completed the Super Monkey Ball 2 story mode as well - that was pretty tough.

I beat IWBTG on Impossible difficulty,
'Twas a fun day.
....No...no way in hell is that even possible! You sir are a miracle!!
I don't think IWBTG is that hard in the grand scheme of things, but to finish it on impossible... that's beyond an amazing feat. I'm not bad at platformers and IWBTG is one of my favourite games, but I know that's one thing I'll never come close to achieving.

I remember how long it took for anyone to claim beating impossible on the official IWBTG forums, and when the first guy finally did he only managed it by running two versions of the game (one on impossible, one on normal) and practicing the shit out of each segment. I know that my palms would still be sweaty as all hell when it came to the impossible bits.

Every time it's beaten on impossible the creator is informed.

I'd need proof for that feat.

OT: Super Meat Boy

Oh I'm with you in my disbelief, but I thought I'd go with a positive spirit of things as opposed to cherry picking the hardest ones and saying "nah you didn't."

This thread made me realize that I don't really seek out difficult games, or avoid them, on purpose. I usually just play on the default difficulty. I can't think of anything particularly difficult that I've played recently. I've gotten a decent number of top 100 time records on Super Meat Boy levels. They've probably been beaten by this point though... still haven't finished that game.

These days I just stop playing most games at some point. Usually because something else distracts me. The only one I've stopped playing due to difficulty in recent memory was Trials 2, because I can't beat the last few levels.

Does Bloodline Champions count (it's multi-player only)? That game's quite difficult and competitive, unless you're playing people far below your skill level I guess. Season 2 just started and I qualified for the diamond league (the highest league). Staying there all season will be tough, if I manage that, I'll have beaten Bloodline Champions as far as I'm concerned :p

Man, I don't finish the vast majority of games I play these days xD

Mega Man 7. When you reach the final boss, the game's difficulty spikes sharply enough to impale someone. Assuming you don't use any healing items or special weapons, that is. It took me AT LEAST 100 tries (not exaggerating) before I finally managed to beat him with just the Mega Buster.

Honourable mentions go to Mega Man & Bass (pretty much the entire game is hard, but nothing trumps MM7's final boss fight), F-Zero GX, Contra 3 & 4 (although I have yet to beat either game on Hard mode) Starcraft 2 (Brutal difficulty)and Mega Man Zero Collection (every game) on Hard mode.

The most impressive thing I've done in gaming, as far as difficulty is concerned, was beating both Contra and Super C for the NES in one night.

I beat Castlevania III for the NES, which gets very punishing near the end. The final level took about 30-40 continues to beat.

Startropics was quite difficult, although it may be much easier if I played it now.

Super Meat Boy is the most difficult modern game I've beaten, although I can't imagine ever completing all the Dark World levels, or all the Cotton Candy levels.

In terms of actual difficulty levels, Onimusha 2, which I completed 100%, which involves playing at the hardest difficulty setting, which I managed to breeze through. So it may not have been that hard, or I was just very used to the controls.

But in terms of actually being hard without difficulty settings affecting it, the first thing that springs to mind is Devil May Cry 4. There were probably more difficult games I've played but that one did certainly infuriate me.
