So, it's like Pokémon, right?
For some reason, this made me laugh. This is my new go to answer if I don't know what's going on. Thankyou for that.

You don't say! I bet no one else noticed and you're the first person to post this.
Kind of my thoughts exactly; pretty much everyone on the internet was claiming this forever ago.

I haven't even seen hunger games, though I saw battle royale years ago.

Alright, so there are these things called Tropes [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage].

They are about how things in writing happen to repeat themselves in a recognizable pattern.

After reading it enough, you might notice that by your definition, everything has "ripped off" something else.

You now have two options. 1. Scream about the unoriginality of writers, or 2. Realize that your definition is faulty and that "ripped off" should be applied to something that resembles something else in everything but name, while not invoking the other work nor having ties to the other work.

e.g
This:

is a ripoff of this:
Note that the first is exactly like the second, except that the O's are Q's, in an obvious attempt to benefit from the status the second.

whereas this:
is not a ripoff of this:
Note that these two are just the result of hilarious coincidence, not plagiary.

EDIT: fixed a derped image.

If you have not seen BR it was a novel in 1999 and a movie in 2000. It's based in present day Japan were kids in school every month to year have to fight to the death in atleast three days. Such as in The Hunger Games there is romance between characters and theres action. These two stories are very similar in many ways. To watch the first BR go on youtube.com/movies its free. The second one you just have to find yourself.
Did you read The hunger games? Or are you basing this on the movie? If it's the latter i suggest you read the book before casting the first stone .
Yes I read all of the Hunger Games novels.

Battle Royale also has about 3000 or so pages of manga to dig through, and it's one of the most astonishingly hardcore pieces of literature in existence. Go give it a look.

Because Hunger Games is a fucking rip-off.

Well yeah. Haven't this topic been brought up before?
I enjoy how meta that comment is.

OT: I don't really feel like saying Hunger Games is a rip off of Battle Royale. I think there's probably distinct differences that a die-hard fan of both could point out (I, however, am not that person).

What I do find amusing is a sense of "old man" (even though I'm not over 30) I get from hearing younger people talk about the movie. A younger co-worker noted that Hunger Games was "a concept that's never been done". To which, I replied "uh...Running Man". There are hundreds of examples, I choose Running Man because I love cheesy action, and Running Man is so cheesy, it's mandatory viewing in Wisconsin schools.

Alert all stations! [Prototype] rips of Assassins Creed by being a city sandbox game where you can hide in plain sight with a hoodie and kill specific people with blades of some kind!

...Except these games are entirely different. It's the same here. A similar event does not make it a rip-off. Half-Life is not a ripoff of Doom, The Chronicles of Narnia is not a ripoff of The Lord of the Rings, and Wreck-It Ralph is not a ripoff of Who Framed Rodger Rabbit?

If The Hunger Games is a rip off of Battle Royale then Uncharted is a rip off of Tomb Raider...
I mean then Battelfield 3 is a rip off of Modern Warfare...
I mean then National Treasure is a ripoff of Indiana Jones...
I mean then Firefly is a rip off of Outlaw Star...
I mean then Family Guy is a rip off of The Simpsons...
I mean then Dragon Age is a rip off of Lord of the Rings...
I mean then Shaun of the Dead is a rip off of Dawn of the Dead...
I mean then Scream is a rip off of Friday the Thirteenth...
I mean then Scary Movie is a rip off of Scream...
I mean... this could take a while...

Any way I think you're right, Hunger Games is a rip off of Battle Royale, but it's not a bad thing.

Here's a truism Everything that exists has been done already.
Creativity is pretty much dead.

We need less people trying to make money and more people trying to make content in my opinion.

Some rip offs can turn out really well though.

Scray Movie, Shaun of the Dead, and Family Guy are all rip offs but they are rip off parodies which is quite diffrent from a full rip off if you think about it.

A parody is just a ripoff with out illusions of originality.
and you can quote me on that.

But it's still just a line in the sand, I didn't say that Bioshock was a ripoff of the Socialist Manifesto. So if I'm not going to call satire a ripoff then I guess I should give the parody a little more love.

Were they or were they not ripped off?

Ok.... so it has one similar plot element so that makes it a rip off?

Anyone with half a brain knows they are different stories that have a similar premise and that in no way makes them the same or devalue one or the other. All it does is bring forward comparisons in quality and preference.

"Rip off" That's another term I'm sick and tired of hearing, to the point that I want to punch the next person who utters it. Just because they follow similar themes does NOT mean one is a rip off of the other, SHUT UP!!
Agreed, there are far too many pieces of fiction in the world for us not to find similarities. Battle Royale doesn't own exclusive rights on the idea of kids+death sport, is this just a contrived way to hate Hunger Games? Though saying this I still plan to follow through my lawsuit of Christopher Nolan as Inception was an idea I had one time during a dream. Unless he inceptioned me, in which case I apologise.
