I've made this thread as I'm doing a bit of research on games for a collage project. I was asked to look at something related to the topic "the impact of technology" so I decided to look at the impact of gaming on young people. No one I know plays that many games so I thought who better to ask then real gamers like yourselves. Basically I'd like to know about the following if you've some time to spare:

How do you think Games have influenced you :

What is/was your favorite game/games (anything in the last decade really) why?:

Your most played game (if you have the amount of hours on steam or other Statistics that'd be helpful. optional :p):

Your favorite type of game and why (fps/rts/etc):

Your opinion on MMORPG's (can be positive of negative or both)

Your favorite aspect of a game (Story/gameplay/muliplayer/etc)

What do you think the future of Games are? :

Anything else you'd like to say?

Any feedback is good feedback even just a few lines or if you've read anything related to this i'd love to see it.

p.s. thanks to everyone in advance

edit: do you think games make people violent???

How do you think Games have influenced you : Er..alot, I pick up bits of speech here and there that I use in general conversation, even actions and stuff I pick up.

What is/was your favorite game/games (anything in the last decade really) why?:I suppose I say Tales of Vesperia, I like how unpredictable the story is and how interesting the characters are, the gameplay is also very fun.

Your most played game (if you have the amount of hours on steam or other Statistics that'd be helpful. optional :p): I would say Oblivion but I don't have an overall time, recently found out that I had played both Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Super Smash Bros. Brawl for over 200 hours each though.

Your favorite type of game and why (fps/rts/etc): I like RPGs, usually for the stories, characters, immersion, soundtrack, that sort of thing.

Your opinion on MMORPG's (can be positive of negative or both): I don't really have one.

Your favorite aspect of a game (Story/gameplay/muliplayer/etc): I suppose it is the story, but gameplay is definitely second.

What do you think the future of Games are?: I have no idea, I suppose we're eventually working our way to Virtual Reality though, so I say that.

Anything else you'd like to say? Not really

Any feedback is good feedback even just a few lines or if you've read anything related to this i'd love to see it.

How do you think Games have influenced you : I think they've influenced me by actually allowing me to be good at something that isn't academic as I'm not a very sporty person and my only skillsets are really cooking, playing the banjo and gaming.

What is/was your favorite game/games (anything in the last decade really) why?: My 3 favourites would be the Ape Escape Series, the Timesplitters series and Fallout: New Vegas

Your most played game (if you have the amount of hours on steam or other Statistics that'd be helpful. optional :p): All my play time on games is roughly equal. Currently my New Vegas file is at 32 hours and counting while my Halo: Reach time will probably be a bit above that. I'll get back to you on it.

Your favorite type of game and why (fps/rts/etc): First-Person Shooters and RPGs are my favourites by far.

Your opinion on MMORPG's (can be positive of negative or both): MMORPGs are a mixed bunch. A lot of them are the same, regardless of the title due to a lot of MMOs trying to emulate World of Warcraft (don't get me wrong, it's a solid formula but innovation would be nice!). Personally, I love MMOs that are somewhat fresh and original. City of Heroes stands out most in my mind. I played it for about 4 or 5 years and it's by far the most original one I've found. Champions Online is a nice hybrid between action games, City of Heroes and World of Warcraft, but feels too much like a clone. In terms of Free-to-Play ones Dungeons and Dragons Online is by far the best. It digitalises something I love (DnD) and keeps the good ol' MMO formula but adds some nice quirks such as a narrator throughout your quests, puzzles etc.

Your favorite aspect of a game (Story/gameplay/muliplayer/etc): Story and Gameplay interchangably. I love them both; one can't excell without the other, in my opinion.

What do you think the future of Games are? : Unfortunately, I can imagine it's going to get worse before it gets better what with motion controls and 3D gaming. I can imagine after we cross that hurdle we can finally get some of that sweet virtual reality gaming we see in sci-fi movies. Too bad it'll be sometime in the far-flung future.

Anything else you'd like to say?Another fellow Irish Escapist! Huzzah!

Might as well start with myself

How do you think Games have influenced you :
I feel games have influenced my imagination, whenever I had to write shorts stories in school it seemed to be something to do with space-marines or had call of duty type plots. The same could be said about the artwork I used to draw (and still draw now and again). I also feel like life is a like of an mmo sometimes, we all have the same goals but go about them diffrently, mmo's also thought me how to manage time and money and showed me that even impossible tasks can be completed if you spend time to plan it out.

What is/was your favorite game/games (anything in the last decade really) why?:

probably the first dawn of war because, at the time, it felt really challanging as i'd never played rts type games before and also i loved the story and characters. this game basically got me into reading 40k novels.

Your most played game :
not sure about games i owned in the past (i wasn't counting =P) but recently I spent about 335 hours playing global agenda , i know this isn't alot compared to other people, but the fact is I was pretty hooked in a short amount of time. thinking back I probable spent twice as much time playing cod modern warfare when if came out

Your favorite type of game and why (fps/rts/etc):
any Game that lets me create content, I love games like spore or Little Big planet that let me create anything I could imagine and share them with people

Your opinion on MMORPG's (can be positive of negative or both)

I Love them and hate them all at once, I love alway trying to improve my character but hate the amount of time doing repeative tasks, but when you add in the social aspect of mmo's it kind of balances out.

Your favorite aspect of a game (Story/gameplay/muliplayer/etc)

I think a good story is vital to a game, especially when i get to influence that story. games like mass effect, Bioshock and fallout are awesome in my opinion because sometime you really have to think hard about the decision you make and how it will effect you long term

What do you think the future of Games are? : I guess kinect and move will be around for a while, and with 3d tv's creeping into our lives it'll be interesting when the two come together. the next decade will be interesting

Anything else you'd like to say?

please write something like this :p

Get ready for quite a bit of text:

1.) How do you think Games have influenced you : I definitely think games have taught me something about what humanity is. We create these games for all sorts of purposes (unfortunately most of them revolve around money), and that says something about us all, whether we are the producers or the consumers of games.

2.) What is/was your favorite game/games (anything in the last decade really) why?: Metal Gear Solid series, hands down. I really push for a strong story element in any game, regardless of title. This seems to be the plight of modern gaming; all the time and effort put into creating a digital world diminishes the initial goal. Therefore, in order to make enough money to pay for the investment, companies rush games out without taking the time to really polish them (see Alone in the Dark). But the Metal Gear Solid series has always held a special place in my heart for its story. Most find it confusing and pointless, but I have always tried to make sense of what was happening; the motivations, the plot twists, the character relations, the technology, and especially the timeline are all things I paid attention to. And I've liked what I have seen. Of course, the gameplay of each title changes a lot, so it's very refreshing compared to most sequels that barely add anything (and often take stuff out). Take, for example, MGS3. You actually had to eat food and animals in order to survive. And you had to fix damage to yourself beyond health packs. I have yet to see a game do any better than that.

3.) Your most played game (if you have the amount of hours on steam or other Statistics that'd be helpful. optional :p): I most definitely have the most hours clocked on the Call of Duty games since CoD4. I couldnt say the amount of time, since its so long ago and so much time involved.

4.) Your favorite type of game and why (fps/rts/etc): FPS. Simple, effective, and good for blowing off steam. And theyre fast enough for me to be completely engaged for hours.

5.) Your opinion on MMORPG's (can be positive of negative or both): I really dont approve of how seriously some people take them. They are GAMES, but you wouldnt know that the way some people talk about them. The 1337 WoW players (and MMOs, etc.) treat the game with more responsibility than real life. Games are good for relaxing or escapism, but not as a second job (see EVE Online player-run corporations). This is especially unnecessary when people put real life money into it on a regular basis. I honestly think that money should be used for better purposes than throwing money into the bottomless pit of MMOs

6.) Your favorite aspect of a game (Story/gameplay/muliplayer/etc): Although I value a good story, the most important part is the gameplay. Its possible to skip over the story and such, but when it comes right down to it, youre here to play the game. Whatever the gameplay may be, its the reason you keep playing the game yourself as opposed to watching the cutscenes on YouTube. And yes, a story can make up for crappy gameplay, but the story would have to be outstanding. We're not at the point that games can do this on a regular basis, so we have to rely on the gameplay. With the current trend in the industry of remaking old games, creating sequels for long-running franchises, and making new games that parrot existing games, this year will probably be looked upon in the future as a slump in gaming history. Technology is here, but it's too expensive to be widely used.

7.) What do you think the future of Games are? : I think there will be two branches, one that continues on from Kinect, Move, and Wii, more or less creating a room of virtual interfaces and true 3D gaming, and another that uses brainwaves rather than a controller to move a character (see Mind Flex for the start of that tech) and will make your brain the wireless connector for whatever consoles exist in the future. Complicated, yes. Totally awesome and what we all want, definitely.

How do you think Games have influenced you :

Games are my life, in a way. Seriously. I will be going to college for a mix of programming and game design, and will be creating video games for the rest of my life, if I can. Video games have inspired me to create, and to tell stories. I know there are people out there who have fears of lives "being ruined" by playing games--just look to the Supreme Court case going on right now about selling violent video games to minors--but to me, there nothing at stake of being ruined, in fact, I'd say that people have only to gain by playing video games.

They encourage quick and logical thinking: they make you analyze a given situation and figure out the best possible way to get through it (There is a really good study on this that was done recently... if you're interested I'll try to find it). They give you a view of interpersonal interactions that no other form of media can: In Dragon Age: Origins (or Mass Effect, or KOTOR, or any game made by Bioware) you are constantly throw into moral situations. From helping a lost boy find his mother, to saving a stranger's loved one by sacrificing one of your own, you are always given choices, each with there own (seen and unseen) consequences. If you allow yourself to be pulled into the game, it can really pull at you. Get you thinking, what would you do in this situation? Would you desicrate the grave of a holy man to save a child? How will you punish the man who unwittingly caused the death of so many innocent lives?

And even when the outcome isn't the way you would have liked it, even if you reload your game to get a happier ending... you know where you stand. You have, even for the briefest of moment, looked inside yourself to find an answer.

And there's nothing like that.

Well, uh... yeah. I could go on, for a while, but I think you get the idea. Video games are awesome. They do good things. The exercise parts of you that normally don't get exercised and all that.

What is/was your favorite game/games (anything in the last decade really) why? :
Hmm. Well, here:

Super Mario Word (Super Nintendo): This game is just crazy fun. There are people out there who argue side-scrollers are just "Hold right, and jump when you need to.", but I don't know... there's something that just gets me. Maybe it's the light-hearted nature of the game, maybe it's the nostalgia of it being the first game I ever played and the memories of growing up with it. But for whatever reason, even after beating it time and again, I can always come back and get lost in it.

Your most played game (if you have the amount of hours on steam or other Statistics that'd be helpful. optional :p) :

It's arguable between Super Mario World and this, so I'll talk about this.

Legend of Dragoon. It's a turn based RPG for the PlayStation 1. What I love about it is the characters. ...that sentence sounded weird. Anyway, it is a 4 disc story that really takes the time to flesh out these people, and gets you to care about them (which makes it that much more meaningful when one of them dies). On top of that, the story is absolutely ridiculous. It's got tyrannical governments, kidnapping, dragons, and at one point, The. Moon. Fell.

So yeah, I've put a bajillion hours into it. Hm. Each time you play the game, there is a counter that keeps track of the hours you've put into it. I've maxed out that counter (it tops out at 99 hours and 99 minutes) at least 5 times.

Your favorite type of game and why (fps/rts/etc) :

Excluding Super Mario World, which for some reason is the greatest thing ever, you've probably figured out that I like stories. So, any genre of game really, as long as it has an engaging narrative. Genres that usually have those are Role Playing Games, and adventure games.

Your opinion on MMORPG's (can be positive of negative or both) :

They are terrible. They're bad. The game play is repetitive (point and click, point and click, point and click, repeat x999999999999999), and the story (there are stories to these things, big ones in fact) is so disconnected from your character, you don't feel like you are really experiencing anything. You are just reading other people talk about it.

Your favorite aspect of a game (Story/gameplay/muliplayer/etc) :

Er. Story. Um, you could probably just copy and past my answer from the first question.

What do you think the future of Games are? :

Er. Story. Games in general seem to be trending toward in depth narratives, character interactions and your ability to choose. Some people complain that video games are games, and plot has no business being there, but eh. It's not really my opinion. It's two sides of a coin, really. I personally am completely enamored with the unique way that games can tell you stories, while a good friend of mine is all about gameplay. We both enjoy gaming just as much as one another, we just get different things out of them.

But yeah, a lot of games are starting to have actually WRITERS. Who write. Write plot lines. And to me, it's pretty good.

Anything else you'd like to say? :

Well, I've spent a good chunk of time on writing all of this, and hopefully it'll help. Sorry that I constantly was getting off topic. If there are any other questions you can think to ask, I'll be happy to write more.

What is/was your favorite game/games (anything in the last decade really) why?:

Team Fortress 2: Balanced multiplayer and my friend is an avid fan of it.

Your most played game (if you have the amount of hours on steam or other Statistics that'd be helpful. optional :p):

Team Fortress 2: 311 hours (Steam)

Your favorite type of game and why (fps/rts/etc):

FPS, because I like instinct-oriented actions.

Your opinion on MMORPG's (can be positive of negative or both)

I've never played them, so I'm indifferent.

Your favorite aspect of a game (Story/gameplay/muliplayer/etc)

Multiplayer, it's what brings me back.

What do you think the future of Games are? :

They're here to stay, and will go through their trends.

Anything else you'd like to say?

Whether it's on the PC or console doesn't matter.

How do you think Games have influenced you :

Games have influenced me greatly. I am going to college for 3D animation and hopefully Game Art next year.

What is/was your favorite game/games (anything in the last decade really) why?:

Call of Duty 4. It was my first real online game, and I got really good at it. Mostly, though, because I met so many of my friends in that game, and started our small clan then. I still play it online occasionally.

Your most played game (if you have the amount of hours on steam or other Statistics that'd be helpful. optional :p):

Again, CoD4. I have 21 days online on my profile alone (360). I have played on other accounts to add to that time, but the amount cannot be determined.

Your favorite type of game and why (fps/rts/etc):

FPS and Racing. I like shooting things and like driving fast. Both things I cannot do in real life to an extent.

Your opinion on MMORPG's (can be positive of negative or both)

Personally, I do not like them. I think they have hurt the overall image of gaming in the past decade (EG, South Park WoW episode, MS guy calling gamers "sweaty 30yos in Metallica T-shirts")

Your favorite aspect of a game (Story/gameplay/muliplayer/etc)

Gameplay. You can have a story about virtually anything, and as long as the gameplay is fun, it will probably work, but they are all dependant of each other.

What do you think the future of Games are? :

I believe games with more RPG elements are coming. By that, I mean more games, at least in the FPS category, like Boarderlands. A fun game, heavy in RPG elements, that is nothing like a typical RPG.

Also, as graphics have come to a point where not much more can be done to make things look much better without entering the Uncanny Valley, I believe PHYSICS is the next big step in making great games. This would make a huge difference in the genre of racing games. The improvements are too long to list.

Anything else you'd like to say?

I believe big franchises need to come to an end. Franchises like Call of Duty and Final Fantasy. There is no denying these series have created some tremendous games that changed the way we play, but they are getting to a point where they are too big. Many games are pushed back and delayed, or not even made because of games like these. The game may have a terrific idea, a new, challenging style of gameplay that could alter the FPS or RPG genre, but when its competing against CoD or FF, it might not be seen as feasable to make, so it may be cancelled, or have a very limited budget. This hurts gaming as a whole, because new ideas may be squashed before they have time to develop. And just as in other fields, such as operating systems and MP3 players, the market will become stagnant, with few choices. Its like giving an exclusive contract of a genre to a game. Whereas NFL games could only be made by EA, think of it as only Activision can create an FPS.

Thank you for reading, and you are welcome. Good luck.

inspiration. whenever i play a game that involves machines, i can't help but try to figure out if and how they can work in the real world.

andventure/puzzle. they are proof that video games are not just mind rotting devices

as long as it has a free roam world and les you cancle what other people say, it's good.

Your favorite aspect of a game:
story AND gameplay

What do you think the future of Games are?:
allowing people to see life through the eyes of others.

How do you think Games have influenced you: Since I grew up with games I've always had an appreciation for technology and it's advancements. Other than that I don't think I was affected very much. I don't play them uber often, and I'm more of an anime nerd than a gamer so I would still be interesting in all the geeky things...

What is/was your favorite game/games, why?:
Persona 3 (so much for recent, and haven't beaten it yet so I don't want to play 4 yet) First off the story is amazing, and second I love the gameplay. I love the JRPG battles and the rock paper sissors effect (like pokemon) and I love the daytime life sim. Live a normal life by day and battle monsters by night, save the world even though no one knows your doing it, isn't that like every kids dream?

Your most played game:
Pokemon or Okami, both have over 300 hours (okami has over 800 if you count the fact I forgot to turn my PS2 off)

Your favorite type of game and why:
I love JRPGs and adventure games, that hard to classify genre. Okami, Psychonauts, Pokemon, Chrono Cross, Assassins Creed, the games where you can go where ever you want whenever you want and explore. It doesn't have to be non-linear, I like having to follow a path, but I also like to be able to go off the path and goof off and then when I want to progress in the game I continue on the path.

Your opinion on MMORPG's:
Seeing as how I love adventure games I love the exploring part and I don't mind the grind now and then. Guild Wars is the only one I play regularly (cuz it's free and I don't play it that often to make $30 worthwhile) and I was lvl 18 before I realized I should do missions, I was just as happy killing monsters and exploring the land.

Your favorite aspect of a game:
A good mixture of story and gameplay. In a JRPG you need a good story to make up for the repetitive gameplay. In some others you don't need a big overlying story, such as in Guild Wars or Assassins Creed, I would be fine if it had no story and just missions you had to accomplish.

What do you think the future of Games are?:
Shitty realistic FPS games that are all clones of each other and casual games on the Wii to get your grandma to play. However for every 100 crappy games that come out there is at least one gem worth finding.

Well games have stopped me from punching people in the face in real life. Now I just shoot them dead in VR.

What is/was your favorite game/games (anything in the last decade really) why?:
Hard to say, when I pick up a new game, it usually shoots up to the top of my "to play" list, unless it's really bad.

For the purpose of this survey, I'd say New Vegas, mainly because of its mods (on PC anyway).

Your most played game (if you have the amount of hours on steam or other Statistics that'd be helpful. optional :p):
Heroes of Newerth, Over 2000 hours played in the past year or so.

Your favorite type of game and why (fps/rts/etc):
Used to be FPS games, but now I'm swinging for RPGs since I found out they had more... well, more.

Your opinion on MMORPG's (can be positive of negative or both)
I hate MMOs! Hate 'em! Hate 'em! Hate 'em! Hate 'em! Hate 'em! Hate 'em! Hate 'em! Hate 'em! Hate 'em! Hate 'em! Hate 'em...

Your favorite aspect of a game (Story/gameplay/muliplayer/etc)
Gameplay, a good story is not good if I rage quit halfway through the game.
That said, I do enjoy a game more if it has a good story.

What do you think the future of Games are? :
Possibly hologram RTS games, that would be awesome

Anything else you'd like to say?
Just one thing really...
I hate surveys.

How do you think Games have influenced you :
I spend most of my time playing them and I have taken a game design/development course at college, so i'd say positively.

What is/was your favorite game/games (anything in the last decade really) why?:
I'm not really sure and for that reason I' no help here (sorry ^^)

Your most played game (if you have the amount of hours on steam or other Statistics that'd be helpful. optional :p):
Probably fallout 3 or oblivion, I've got at least 200+ hours on both, that or minecraft (i dunno how much i've played it but it's getting there

Your favorite type of game and why (fps/rts/etc):
Again I really don't have a favourite, I'm like this with everything genre wise, I can't really pick a favourite

Your opinion on MMORPG's (can be positive of negative or both)
I haven't really played them but I'd like to play one sometime

Your favorite aspect of a game (Story/gameplay/muliplayer/etc)
Story and gameplay (I know I'm cheating here a little :p )

What do you think the future of Games are? :
I hope that games can evlolve and become more accepted and that people will not think of them as "Just games" but as a valid hooby, or creative experience (as in like books, films tv etc)

Anything else you'd like to say?
I've basically had something to do with games since I was born (it might be important to say here that i'm 16) as my dad had a computer and I'd watch him play games on it and then I started to play them myself. I'd probably say it's helped me interact with my dad as I grew up (so that's good). I was always around computers and games.

Frankly, there is no way that these questions are going to give you any remotely usable data. Is this an interview that's meant to help you figure out how to make a survey, or is this itself supposed to be a survey?

I suppose an "interview" is more accurate then "survey". I did make up the questions though, so there useful to me and the posts so far are very interesting. If I'm the only person who can make sense of the information thats ok with me. feel free to suggest other questions, its all about peoples opinions after all

Timesplitters. All the games. Because they are just absolutely fantastic. The story is funny, not too long, not too short, and just a great joy to play. Its also co-op. The multiplayer is the best I've ever played. The games have a wealth of fun, varied game modes and the bots are fun to play against. The settings for the matches are not particularly deep, but they are just fantastic. There are over 150 characters to choose from/fight against, and each is unique. Mostly. And the mapmaker is the simplest, deepest one I've ever used. The bots also adapt to whichever map you make, which is quite a technological feat.

Your most played game (if you have the amount of hours on steam or other Statistics that'd be helpful. optional :p):

Civilization. I don't know which game I played the most of. If I had to guess it would be Civ 3. But yeah, I shudder to think how many hours I put into those games. Well over 1000 if I added all the hours from each game together.

Your favorite type of game and why (fps/rts/etc):

I don't really have a favorite genre. Most games contain elements from each one now, so picking a favorite one is kind of pointless in my opinion.

Your opinion on MMORPG's (can be positive of negative or both)

They're an interesting concept, and I can see the appeal. However I don't like them. Mainly because they usually devolve into a mindless grind for experience to level up.

Your favorite aspect of a game (Story/gameplay/muliplayer/etc)

Gameplay. If a game's not fun to play, I won't play it.

What do you think the future of Games are? :

onestly, if the Supreme Court rules in favor of California, it won't be too bright. Creativity will be stifled due to violent games being strictly regulated. And "violent game" is a very broad term.

But if we can get past it, and if publishers put creativity before profit, then it has bright times ahead of it.

Anything else you'd like to say?

I <3 Timesplitters.

Any feedback is good feedback even just a few lines or if you've read anything related to this i'd love to see it.

p.s. thanks to everyone in advance

edit: do you think games make people violent???

Hell no. No more then movies, books, TV and other forms of entertainment. If anything games help relieve stress. The Violent Crime rate with youth's has been decreasing and is at its lowest in years. Interestingly its getting lower when game popularity is getting higher. And if they crack down on games, why aren't they cracking down on movies that inspire reckless behavior? Like Fight Club and Fast and Furious? What about the people who do reckless things because they feel they were told to because of how they interpreted a book? These situations are rare, but situations where violence is caused by games is equally rare, and boils down to the fact that the individual was already messed up in the head, like all other cases involving people committing violence in real life and claim a book/movie/whatever told them to.
Hope this helps.
