Other people with a different mindset might prefer a quiet surrounding instead of actively showing it, thus they'll dress up in whatever the rest wears. You can't solely judge whether a person is unique by his/her appearances.

A mental wipe wouldn't do either, surely people will be different from each other in the beginning, in the end it would all repeat.
If that's the case, why do people always judge people at first glance. They see a kid in all black they automatically think what? That must be a sad/angry child. Hell, that might be partly true, but if they like wearing black it makes them look slimming and they're the most carefree and silly person known to others. Everyone is judged based off appearance whether we like it or not. I agree that we can't solely judge on how we look, but people do it anyway.

Okay, MAYBE not a mental wipe...mmm.. Maybe.

In my opinion, I don't think conformism is defined by doing things that other people are doing, but by doing things because other people are doing them. I wear and do whatever I want to, for the most part. I like things that are popular, but I also like things that are obscure and virtually unknown. I don't think that liking anything mainstream is wrong simply because other people are doing it, and it strips me of my "individuality".

I'm always a little annoyed by "counter-culturalists" sometimes, their definition of "marching to the tune of your own drummer" is really "marching to the tune of OUR drum". Really the only thing that is different is that they are less in number than the "mainstream". I think this quote explains it well enough:
"The only thing a nonconformist hates more than a conformist is another nonconformist who doesn't conform to the prevailing standard of non-conformity."

I like what I like, you know? I've gotten flak from conformists and "non-conformists" for the odd things I like. C'est la vie, I don't need any justification (obviously I do happen to have some, but that's beyond the point).

I just think that conformism should be defined by your motives behind doing something.

P.S:
"Another thing that bothers me is how it's okay to be in an interracial relationship."
That's a quote from you, I'm not entirely sure if I agree with you, the rest of the paragraph doesn't appear to have anything to do with the first sentence....

When I said "you can't judge by appearance" I meant "you can't judge by appearance and have a correct idea of the person"

Like "You can't put your pawn 3 squares forward", surely you can, it's just not a correct move.

People are tribal, and will seek other like-minded people out of instinct (for their comfort zone). It doesn't matter if everyone follows trends, I can think of 2 of my best friends right off the bat that very clearly do things according society or going against it. Simply because I'm a gamer it's easy for me to bring up the example: these are the kinds of guys who wouldn't play games if it wasn't currently acceptable in a social sense. Regardless of all of that, even though it angers me that they let themselves be ruled by trends, it's their lives and I have to respect that. They're still my friends despite issues we may have about it.

In the end, to be an individualist you can't just live life as you see fit, you must also let others live their lives as they see fit.

Being an individual is starting a thread on individuality. Being like everyone else is replying to said article. I think its hilarious that philosophical matters are being dealt with on a gaming website

I am aware that I have also replied.

lol I'm pretty... "individual" myself, i listen to music that ranges from classical to opera, to finnish power metal, sme 90s rock some 70s stuff stuff from the 50s and 60s death metal a little bit of jazz pretty much anything provided it either has more than 3 words in the lyrics or none at all... I wear everything from polo shirts & slacks to cammo cargoes and t-shirts with funny sayings on em... I drive a 1970 Dodge Polara and I owned a 1977 mustang II Ghia before that which i gave to my mother as a christmas present on a whim. I build computers, work on cars play any sport i can get involved in. I game i work out and i read books... but I'm also terribly socially awkward and tend to be a loner and have only a few solid friends... also never been on a date might think of me as a loser socially, but i mean I just kinda gave up since i can't find anyone to relate to on anything deeper than a physical level y'know? also i am frequently shunned by "social groups" they find my inability to limit myself to a certain genre or specific thing uncomfortable to them so they tend to harsh on me or just ignore me and push me out of the group... was bullied all through school and though i never lost a fist fight in my life, i got into alot of scuffles and whatnot in school. every friend i made in school backstabbed me within about 6 months of meeting them, in which i decided to just not bother being overly friendly, just being kinda nice and being an a-hole when the situation even whispered for it...

yeah individualism isn't dead you just gotta look for the (unfortunately) rare cases of it in truth. people who aint afraid of being rejected and do their own thing no matter what people say about it.

Being yourself is fine but going against the mainstream just for the sake of going against it is becoming it's own subculture. For example the new "every videogame made after 1999 is garbage the old games are best." Thats just hating something for the sake of appearing "old school"

Dude, we read it already. My memory's not THAT bad!

Anyway. What happens if dressing in sharp clothes makes me feel good? Perhaps subconsciously I'm doing it to make others like me, but I still like me dressed sharp. I have this one overcoat type deal that none of my friends or family like but I like how I feel in it because I think I look good in it... ::shifty eyes::

I kinda skimmed seeing how I am work and all but I'll reread when I'm not at work.
So you are saying you want to be accepted by people? I don't understand that. Everyone in the world including my family could hate me and I still would not care.

*Hugs the OP*

I think you are an individual so long as you try NOT to define yourself in terms.

I see "true" individuaists as people who don't give a rat's ass about whether or not they're popular, or socially accepted, or any of that bullshit.

I am who I am, and that is not you. Isn't that what makes us individuals? Our differences?

don't have much to add to that. I don't fit into any aforementioned categories, and i dont go the retard route by conforming to nonconformity. I listen to whatever the hell i want, hang out with whoever the hell i want, and don't know or care what other people think of me. though, as far as clothing goes, everyone is conformist in some sense, cuz i sure as fuck wouldn't wear anything if i wasn't forced to.

With a planet full of billions of humans, its practically impossible to be an individual.

I suppose you could kill everyone else. That would make you an individual.
(Also be kind of lonely and boring, but hey, murderers shouldnt get rewarded for it)
