I was listening to Radio 2 this afternoon and nearly drove my car down an embankment into a park because of a discussion on the Jeremy Vine Show. The discussion was about atheists wanting to be unbaptised.

This is stupid beyond all reason, if you are a bloody atheist why in the name of darwin do you care that you were dipped in a sink?

This is apparently a human rights issue worthy of broadcast on national radio in the UK.

So what are peoples thoughts on the situation...

That is stupid. Imagine if a Jew became an atheist and asked to be uncircumcised. Edit: It is actually possible to be uncircumcised but it is painful and your member will be very thin after you do it.

You're not really an atheist if you think baptism does anything. I was baptised but I don't care.

I don't even believe an un-baptism service exists. Unless perhaps they got their hands on some water blessed by the Church or Satan.

If God doesn't exist, baptism is meaningless. Leave them alone until they find something else to yip about.

I'm a baptised atheist and I don't really care about it but I can see a lot of Richard Dawkins wannabes going on about it I mean seriously if they actually believed in their beliefsit wouldn't metter to them.

According to the Tora, circumcision is not neccessary to qualify as jew.

If I understood the issue correctly (and it's far from clear that i have) it's that these guys want their names stricken from the records as members of the churches at which they were baptised. It's not a "ew, icky, get this holy ghost stuff offa me" thing but a "please remove my name from your calling list" thing.

If you really wanna delve into human stupidity and baptism, take a look at the work of a fringe-whacko set of Mormons going around and "baptising" the graves in Jewish cemeteries.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe - einstein

and he was right
and over here there's alot of discussion about the evolution theory of darwin

I take it that "baptising" graves means something else?

Anyway, back at the OP: Wanting to have your name taken off of a list isn't stupid.

(Nearly drove into an embankment?)

Sadly, no. They're bustin' out the holy water f'realz; I just scarequoted the "baptising" because (at least according to what I've heard and read from people who seriously know this stuff) the recipient of a baptism is supposed to be alive when the process occurs or it's just watering the flowers with added chanting.

What irks some Jewish folks is that, afterwards, these nutters write down the names from the gravestones and count 'em towards the role call of (their version, anyway) the saved. It's like a spiritual version of Enron's cooking of the books... plus it's none of their business doing this without the relatives' permission, anyway, and frankly some of the families are downright insulted.

Holy ....um possible-God. If you don't believe in it, why is it even worth unbabptising yourself as it would be meaningless. Jesus...or not.

Nuff' said.
To be honest, if you really want to leave the Church, there's no need for a formal process. You can just leave. It's something personal, there's no need for a huge amount of fuss and bother. This is simply an attempt by some athiests to stir up the ol' controversy pot, using a spoon made of flimsy hate and bad logic.

thats atheism going so far along the track that its actually as dogmatic as the most devout of religious people. maybe not believeing in god will become the new 'God'. that would be ironic

I'll only call all of humanity stupid once Atheists start building Churches to the all non-powerful Bob.
