I like a few JRPG's, but rarely for Gameplay. Final Fantasy is a good example.
I love outlandish story lines that take place in a world which seems to have a bunch of nations almost certainly trying to stab each other in the back, which is kind of hard when your victim is trying to stab you in turn, so it becomes a game of ring a round the rosy.
I love that, and sometimes, when the character is properly developed (and preferably doesn't go on and on about the responsibility that has been placed on him and so on, yada yada) I can grow to like them. But what keeps pushing me away, for weeks, months, perhaps years at a time, is the turn based Combat. Hell, is it boring. I can see the use of attacking in such a way that allows you to finish off the opponent in a nice cinematic way, which is the RTS way. I can see the use in a gameplay mode that allows you to tear someones head off and shoot their corpse, which is the FPS/Fighting game way. But in the name of all that is slightly violet purple, why do we have a gameplay mode where we politely take turns in throwing Fireballs at each other, without the ability to dodge, run or counterattack? And we have to do this Every time we find an enemy who wants to play?
That continuous grind to get to the last boss has always had me eventually changing the game for something that I can actually blow the pent up steam off.
The storylines can be fun, the characters can be fun, the scenery can be stunning, but Turn based Games will always leave me disappointed. Thats why I like Dynasty warriors, even if it is incredibly easy and repetative: Watching the death count rise to over a 1000 while your entire side sits and watches can be amazingly fun. Its like Genocide Made Easy.
