I haven't played many JRPGs, mainly just the Final Fantasy series. I really enjoyed Final Fantasy Seven, but Eight and Nine I didn't much care for. And really they were the last JPRGs I played, I never bothered getting any of them for the PS2, since the eight and ninth one were so bloody boring. So really the last JRPG I played and enjoyed was FFVII. I liked the previous installments, and Chrono Trigger, and the first three Dragon Warriors, but I really lost interest in them. After FF VII it seemed like they just became an angsty, long haired, anime force against evil corporations. I may be wrong with the general stories of them, but they just seem a bit too cliched against themselves. And far too linear, there's a few side quests but most of it is either following the main quest, or grinding to beat the next main quest. I've started to appreciate western RPGs a bit more, where they allow a bit more freedom, more sidequests, and more moral ambiguities. As opposed to being the savior of all mankind as is forced in the story, you can also be a peasant killing ass. It seems more enjoyable having the choice during the game, even though you usually end up being the savior regardless of your actions. JRPGs are much more straightline story based, whereas western RPGs are more about personal character development and exploration. The JRPG method certainly isn't a bad idea, but when it's the same damn unsure, angsty teen who eventually gets convinced to fight against an evil world destroying power in a linear fashion, it gets old.
