These are very old, as it has been a long time for me, but I loved Shining Force, Legend of Dragoon, FF Tactics and FF7.

Well, that's easy, Valkyria Chonicles.

Before that it has to be Final Fantasy X-2, which has the best version of the ATB system yet. Too bad its packaged into such a horrific story and stuffed full of boring, mandatory mini-games.

A JRPG is immediately a big failure to me if it involves turn-based battles. I don't bother with those.
I also hate random encounters, but if the resulting battle is real-time, then it's not quite as bad, though it's still annoying and tedious how a random encounter, or an encounter you can actually see but takes you to a different area specifically to fight, just puts a stop to the whole game.

Secret of Mana is the best JRPG I have ever played, especially because it's a 3-player game. Plus, no random encounters, and the combat is real-time. The player directly controls one character, and if he doesn't have two other players, then his teammates are controlled by the CPU. They're not brilliant, but it's better than the player having to switch between them and them otherwise not existing in the battle, leaving the player by himself.
Other JRPGs that manage real-time combat are OK, but Secret of Mana is just a prime example of what a good JRPG is.

Man, I loved that game and all its sequels. I wish they'd make another. I'd buy it.

I haven't played many JRPGs, mainly just the Final Fantasy series. I really enjoyed Final Fantasy Seven, but Eight and Nine I didn't much care for. And really they were the last JPRGs I played, I never bothered getting any of them for the PS2, since the eight and ninth one were so bloody boring. So really the last JRPG I played and enjoyed was FFVII. I liked the previous installments, and Chrono Trigger, and the first three Dragon Warriors, but I really lost interest in them. After FF VII it seemed like they just became an angsty, long haired, anime force against evil corporations. I may be wrong with the general stories of them, but they just seem a bit too cliched against themselves. And far too linear, there's a few side quests but most of it is either following the main quest, or grinding to beat the next main quest. I've started to appreciate western RPGs a bit more, where they allow a bit more freedom, more sidequests, and more moral ambiguities. As opposed to being the savior of all mankind as is forced in the story, you can also be a peasant killing ass. It seems more enjoyable having the choice during the game, even though you usually end up being the savior regardless of your actions. JRPGs are much more straightline story based, whereas western RPGs are more about personal character development and exploration. The JRPG method certainly isn't a bad idea, but when it's the same damn unsure, angsty teen who eventually gets convinced to fight against an evil world destroying power in a linear fashion, it gets old.

I played "The World Ends With You" (TWEWY) last year and found that to be really good for a JRPG. It did have a huge grind factor in it, but I always did like grinding away in video games so that was a good thing for me.

I also played Chrono Trigger on the DS some Months ago for nostalgia purposes, though I got frustrated with the new additions to that game, like the new side quest village unlocked late in the game during two time periods (Oh yeah, hinted spoilers. :p).

Currently playing "Avalon Code" on my DS and I just can't call it a good game...Original, somewhat, but it just doesn't know where it wants to go with the beginning story and the entire dungeons are mini-games...Ugh.

I'm playing Lost Odyssey right now and enjoying it. I'm on Disc 3 and the story has really gotten good. The skill system also gives you a lot of flexibility (for a JRPG, that is).

Persona 4 was one of the best games I'd ever played in a long time. At least, that was my thoughts when I finished it.

Kingdom Hearts Uno was very, very good too. For a Disney game, that is! :p

I absolutely loved The World Ends With You, but my most recent JRPG would be Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of Time. It took a while to get into it, but the nostalgia finally kicked in and I'm enjoying it now.

Recently finished Shadow Hearts Covenant. Didn't feel it was anywhere as near as good as it could have been, but I still liked it. However, the Persona series has overtaken it as the premier quirky JRPG brand now .
