The last time a game made you say "wow"

When was the last time a game made you say "wow" and what did it do to elicit that response?

For me it was during a recent play through of Metro 2033.
I was in Market Station I believe. I came upon a few NPCs having a conversation with each other, and I tried to listen in to hear what they were saying, but I couldn't. Not that they were talking to quietly, but everyone else around was talking as well. There was an ambient hum of conversation. Yes, part of it was the standard incomprehensible background noise added to make the place feel more lively, but some of it was actual recorded conversations between characters. I felt like I was in a cramped, noisy, overpopulated metro station. This made me say "wow".

Scenes like this make me believe that if Metro 2033 had more polish and the bugs and kinks worked out, it could easily have been one of the best games ever made.

So, what game last made you say "wow" and what did it do?

Far Cry 3 and it's cutscene stupidity near the end. It sure as hell made me go, "Wow...", swiftly followed by, "Really fell for that?"

XCOM: Enemy Unknown. I say "wow" everytime a PC games works perfectly. I just always expect PC games to go wrong. Steam has made me much more comfertable with PC gaming.

So everytime I install PC game I cross my fingers and if it works I usually say, "Wow, I can't fucking believe it".

The last one? Well, that narrows it down a great deal.

Planetside 2.

My platoon (that's approximately 40 people) and another platoon (another 40 odd) decided to make a joint nighttime airborne assault on The Crown, the best defensive location in the game (it's a watchtower bristling with cannons and AA guns on a hilltop with only two roads leading up).

We loaded up in heavy transport VTOLS along with a couple dozen pubbies who came along for the ride. We totaled eight transports, a couple of gunships and ten or so fighters as escorts.

The sight of our air armada closing in on The Crown in the face of heavy flak as our fighters strafed and bombarded the defenders was awesome. Seeing infantry and exosuits rain from the transports along with drop pods from the sky was even better.

It was the kind of scene that most games can only conceive of as part of a restrictively scripted sequence that insta-kills the player if they try and take two steps off to the left.

Mass Effect 2 when the Normandy is revealed and takes off. Just sat there for a minute going, "can I rewind that?"

Hotline Miami,

First 2 minutes of game-play it wasn't so much 'wow' as 'awww shit! that's fucking nasty! :x' this is after you repeatedly bang a dudes head into the ground till it explodes. Honestly this game is shockingly violent and doesn't pull it's punches something hard to believe for a little top down 8bit game.

The first time I did one of the big super movies in DBZ Budokai 3, and how you see the explosion from an orbiting view, was like "Woah" man.

Also, just how epic Fall of Cybertrons final battle/stage was.

Seconded - even if i had spoiled myself a bit by reading some forum posts it was just "Wow". After finishing it i loaded the last save again and repeated it until i got all the endings. The whole game was a hell of a ride and finally there is a shooter deserving the term mature for it`s story not only the violence which is also just "wow" to me.

I was absolutely blown away when I first saw Divinity's Reach in Guild Wars 2. I play a lot of F2P MMOs so "Town" basically a large open area fenced in by buildings that are actually walls, possibly with 20 people gathered in an area hawking their goods. Divinity's reach actually looked like an epic fantasy town, like Gondor or something. Just walking down the streets and taking in the most beautiful and complete feeling city I had ever seen in an MMORPG made the purchase well worth it.

The entire game made me go wow, but this wow was topped by an even bigger WOW when introduced to the final section of the game.

Just... FUCKING WOW!!!

I can't think of any "wow"s but during the credits of The Walking Dead I was either going "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck" or "jesus".

To the Moon... just wow. To The Moon is an incredible game in every way. That was the last game to do it for me. That or Dragon Age Origins on the PC, made me go "wow" from how much better I found it to be than the console version.

I have a story. My video card started glitching after only a few days use. Sent it back, got a replacement. It was an annoying ordeal.

So... same day. I'm playing Batman: Arkham Asylum. And I get to the part where the voice says, "Did anyone patch the game last night?" Me, "Huh?" Then it starts the fake glitch sequence... and it looks identical to the glitches I had before. And I know the game may be messing with me, but I'm confused because it could be real and I freak anyway.

So. "Wow". They got me good.
