Automated combat in games that shouldn't have it. I'm looking at you Tomb Raider.... I don't care if you're a game that has historically focused on exploration and puzzle solving. In today's world, gamers expect good combat in games that are capable of supporting it. Lara has guns. She's a gymnast. Why the hell does the game only require me to pull both triggers on the 360 while holding the B button simultaneously to get through every "combat" instance? It should be more challenging than that.... Granted, the combat isn't the only reason why TR:U failed in my opinion. (There is a nice rounded out list.) But, the lack of good combat is at the tip.

Fantasy setting. I can't get into the swords and shields and magic. Demon Souls will be an exception to this. Really, this was the only reason I couldn't get into DA: Origins. I love the Sci-fi genre in comparison, however.

Too much focus on mini-games. One of my favorite platformers from my youth would be the original Spyro the Dragon series. Not that crap that came out later. The first game had no mini-games whatsoever. It focused soley on collecting crap and platforming essentially. This is why it's my favorite of the series in regards to gameplay. Spyro 2 won story. All the characters were so fricking charming.... However, the second game just... lost the exploration spark. Instead, you get a little cheat function for the general direction of any gem you weren't able to find and the game focused on mini-games. Whoo! Hockey!! Escort missions! I liked Spyro 2, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't stand a chance against the original game. Spyro 3 seems to be getting worse in this department. I've recently downloaded it on the PSN, but it's turning out to be a meh experience to me. I'll finish the game and probably replay it, but it will be for nostalgia. Without that, I would not be treating this series so tolerantly. Spyro the Dragon will be the only game of the series I actually play for its own sake.

Cramming it down my throat or being made by Activision. (You know why)
Ironically, Skyrim and Skylanders both qualify under these categories respectively and I bought both.
First is because, I don't want to hear about something ALL THE TIME,and around here there's a new Skyrim thread every 5 seconds (Exaggeration)
And the second because Activision loves money so much that they typically do not bother trying to break any barriers, and if they do, they milk it to death.(See Also: Guitar Hero)

I'm pretty sure they WON'T need to milk Skylanders, considering the toy collection part of it (I swear when you buy the game you want to buy more toys,it's evil I'm telling you) but obviously they will find some way to use the portal peripheral to milk this idea too.

I was going to get Saints Row the Third. Then I heard this..

The game is much shorter than Saints Row 2.

There is a years worth of DLC planned.

Screw you THQ... gimp on the main product and focus on DLC. Do.not.want.

When the only thing in the game that you fight is humans, and it's a game with a good amount of combat in it.
It's very repetitive when it's like that. They have to have other forms of things to fight, not just humanoid enemies with guns or swords or whatever.

That, and games with repetitive gameplay. Uncharted and Assassin's Creed fall under both categories from what I can see, and it makes me really uninterested in these games that are really popular to a lot of other people. Even Batman: AA and AC have fallen to the same thing. I have AA sitting there on my shelf but I've just never gotten to it...
Seriously though, I'd be way more interested in playing the latest Cabela's Dangerous Hunts than the latest Uncharted or AC.

every final fantasy game, ever. why? because apparently 7 and this cloud douche is the greatest shit stain to ever exist.

and for games like dragonball ultimate tenkiachi; they changed the voice actors. yeah, thats the only reason. it's not the gameplay (which sucks arse) oh no. its the fact that gohan sounds like a little girl in dudes clothing. coleen clinkenbeard can go die.

Apparently (at least according to everyone I ever talk to) tons of glitches and game-breaking bugs are little things, so I guess they're the little things that stopped my from buying Skyrim for the PS3.
Wise decision.
OP: Any game that supports Project 10$ seriously (locking content already on the disc) or any game with restrictive DRM. They are ultimately little things but, dammit, it is principle.

Skyrim, because of its fans. Specifically, two groups: those who honestly believe it's a perfect game, and those who spam that unfunny "arrow in the knee" meme on everything.

can i say by no means is anything perfect. i would give it three thumbs up if i could. i myself have encountered gamebreaking glitches when a dragon started flying backwards and glitching and made the game lag so slowly i couldnt play. and the lag got really bad at one point and other minor thing like a freeze or two. but i dont care about that because im still having fun. as long as i have fun equal to or greater than what i payed for a game then its great and skyrim is definitely worth the 60 dollars.

OT: two worlds 2 because you cant play as a female the same with fable 1 and rage and brink.

The thing that actually puts me off a game most is hype. When everyone's going "Oh this is amazing, you need to play this, easily game of the year" when it's still got a year left of development, I generally tend to think "Fuck that can't be arsed." Similarly, when the game comes out and all anyone does is talk about it for months on end, I tend to ignore it and go find something else to do.

Also, not every game has this problem, but when I'm just browsing in a store, cover art does actually sway me a lot. There are a lot of possibly good games I've ignored because the cover was vague and indistinct. Best example is currently Skyrim. If I saw that on a shelf, without any idea what the game was, I would just assume "yet another hack and slash fantasy game", and ignore it. This generation more than any other, cover art is becoming a blur of identikit pallet swaps of other, more successful selling games.

Similarly trailers really put me off. Don't show me some guy running about with a gun doing random shooting at stuff. That doesn't make the game stand out at all. It just looks like every other shooter, and I will just ignore it. Grab me with some mystery, give me some plot clues, and make me want to find out about it. Simply giving me shots of soldiers running in a battlefield, with the occasional vehicle in sight, along with quotes like "IGN: 8.8" "The Sun: Amazing" "Nuts: Easily game of the year", doesn't really tell me anything besides the fact that you can pick and choose quotes.

As far as actual game play stuff is concerned I get put off any game that requires you to do endless amounts of leveling up grinding to match the level curve.

Modern Warfare because its CoD.
That's a bit harsh, Modern warfare is a perfectly good game, and if your going to talk it down at least give some proper evidence instead of what makes you seem like a bit of tit.

And for me, 3rd person view. I Dunno, just isnt' immersive i guess.

Battlefield 3. I was going to get it, and I really do still want it, but I would rather saw my genitals off and eat them than install Origin on my computer.

Most recent example:
I was a huge BF2 fanboy. I literally played it for hundreds of hours. Was really excited for BF3. But in the end, they announced that it's Origin exclusive. So I did not buy it, because I do not want to support Origin.

is motion control considered a little thing? it is just one aspect of a game, after all. anyways, i do not buy a game if it requires motion controls.

*) Locked downloadable content that requires an additional purchase (I paid $60 for the game, don't tell me three days later that I can unlock two new weapons if I shell out $5 more you greedy fucks).
1) Constant Online Requirement - I'll miss you Diablo franchise...
2) QTE - Seriously, fuck QTE and whoever thought they were a good idea
3) Origin - Original EULA... yea, I'm not installing EA's new Spyware
4) Multiplayer oriented - I like to play alone most of the time and it doesn't help if the SP is complete shit because the devs focused all the content on MP
5) Graphics oriented - I like my games to look good, but if they could have an amazing story like FF3/6 or Parasite Eve 2; or have addicting gameplay like Demon's Souls or any of the MGS series, then I would settle for the game looking like an 8-bit Gameboy port.
6) EA - EA is like anti-Midas, they turn gold into shit.
7) Sequels to old games:

Skyrim has been the only sequel that has stood the test of time.
Resident Evil franchise went down the hole.
MGS (past Patriots) is doing their own thing off in the corner.
Mario might as well just be a giant dollar sign who farts fanboy profits - same goes with Zelda
Final Fantasy... who the hell knows, I stopped trying to follow the series after 7.
FEAR went from horror to action (even though the first game wasn't scary) and not in a good way.
CoD (actual Call of Duty) just got weird with World at War
MW - was this series ever good? Super soldiers who regen health by crouching next to a wall is being referred to as "modern"?
Dynasty Warriors started declining around DW5 yet they are still making games with diminishing sales.
Dawn of War... what the hell has EA done to you? If I had the money to put Iron Lore back in business and give the franchise back to its rightful owner, I would in a heartbeat!

I know there are others, but those were just the ones that came to mind.

I will love you forever if you say it went downhill after Raccoon City died

(I personally saw the entire series fall into a bottomless pit after Raccoon City exploded.)
