The past couple of days I've been playing Lego Batman 2, and it's really good, and I recommend it, but that's not what I've came to talk about. No, it's about a little detail in the game that made me love it all the more.

Today, I realised that, in the Gotham City hub at least, when you fly around as Superman, it plays the Superman theme tune, and I just loved it.

So, anyone else have moments like that, just a little thing in a game, that makes you love it all the more?

Also, just remembered this little reference to Arkham City as well

Yeah, I loved it how even the LEGO characters can tell it's a horrible idea to contain a bunch of supervillains in a middle of a city and let them battle it out.

I also think the Scarecrow battle was a cute reference to Arkham Asylum boss battle where he is a giant.

I generally just love it if the enemies can harm each other. Even if it's not a particularly good strategy, I just love fooling them to fight each other.

Leonard Nimoy's narrative in Civ 4.

Little references to completely unrelated games like the Notched Pickaxe in Skyrim.

I like some of the little "buffs" in League of Legends. For example Akali has the effect "Ninja" on her with the description "this unit is a flippin' ninja!" it does nothing gameplay wise but it's pretty funny.

Also Gangplank and Miss Fortune with the Pirate and Pirate Hunter buffs respectively.
I know for a fact that the "Ninja" buff does have an effect (a VERY negligible one, but still) Any character with that buff loses 1 HP for every other ninja on the battlefield. Not sure if it's limited to teams or if you had Shen, Akali and Kennen on both teams you would lose 5 HP.

Also Zilean and Volibear have strange buffs (but only if they are on opposing teams). With some flavor text about how Zilean thinks it's absurd for an Armored Bear to be in the League and Volibear's is basically Ha ha I'm in the League Zilean.

As for touches I like... I liked the Deteriorating suit in Batman: Arkham Asylum/City. And I usually like when characters break the fourth wall in games.

In Halo: Reach, enemies actually react to getting shot rather than ragdolize like in most other shooters.
Mind explaining it a bit further? Since ragdolizing is also a reaction to getting shot.

OT:

- The ability to drink blood (or any liquid for that matter) in Dwarf Fortress.
- The ability to attempt to eat anything in Dwarf Fortress.
- The grab function in the Elder Scrolls games.
- The sit function in the Elder Scrolls games.
- Garrett's witty comments during gameplay in the Thief games.
- Emotes in MMORPGs, WoW notably.
- Ability to see your body in first person in ARMA2.
- The video editor in the PC version of GTA IV.
- Thorough customization in Saints Row games.
- The vast number of NPC reactions depending on what race you are and how you look in Arcanum: Of Steamworks And Magick Obscura.

I'm sure there's more, but these are the first that came to mind.

- The salmon swimming up the waterfalls in Skyrim, I thought that was a neat touch.
- All the quotes from Warcraft II and Starcraft that your units say if you click on them often enough. Like for example, Artanis' "This is not Warcraft it space!" *a few more clicks* "It's much more sophisticated!!" *click some more* "I know it's not 3D!!!"
- All the Easter Eggs in the Fallout series. Ones I've personally encountered: The Bridge Keeper, the crashed alien ship (both in Fallout 1 and 3), the Knights of Nei, The Star Wars reference ("I felt a great disturbance..."), and that's all I can remember. Others I've only read about inc. The crashed Star Trek shuttle, the TARDIS, and the Guardian of Forever.

SHIT! I was going to mention all the quotes in Civs IV & V too, but I forgot. And yes Leonard Nemoy's Narration in Civ IV was awesome.

That's a feature I feel is missing from Star Trek Online to the point that it completely throws me out of the game at times, esp. when I'm playing as my Fed Klingon character and doing the Fed-Klingon War missions (BTW the Federation and the Klingons are at war in this game for some stupid reason for those of you who haven't played it.) and none of my Klingon adversaries comment on the fact that I'm a Klingon fighting for the enemy faction. You'd think they'd accuse me of being a traitor to the Empire or something, but no they just spout the usual posturing nonsense they spout for every Fed character.

I really enjoy how the opening and ending lines in SkullGirls can change to fit who are going against one another. The ones that make me giggle most is probably when you pit Peacock against Ms. Fortune or Valentine.

Peacock: Oh look a putty-tat!
Ms. Fortune: *With a familiar lisp* Sufferin' succotash!

Peacock: *Fighting Valentine* Hello~ nurse!

The second one never fails to make me grin. But then again Peacock is just a living reference to all the awesome wacky cartoons of years past. Which makes her totally awesome(she's not bad to fight with either).

Another is in the JRPG Star Ocean: The Second Story, you have the ability to create all kinds of armor, weapons, and items among other things. One of your item making abilities is cooking, whatever you cook comes with a description of the food that makes all of it sound delicious (well... save the mistakes.) same for other items. The 'flavor text' is all pretty well written and along with a pretty decently rendered 3D version spinning beside the text it really helps to make item creation... Hell just buying items a not too shabby experience. I think that game has spoiled me, while it is far from a deal breaker I do tend to let out a little 'aww' whenever a game won't let me actually see pictures or include flavor text.

Related is how in Legend of Legaia whenever you change armor your appearance actually changes with it. I confess that for the longest time I would pout when an RPG wouldn't change my appearance with my armor.

Lastly I want to mention my 'pet' developer Insomniac Games, they do a great job of making their worlds feel alive. Even back when they were working on the original Spyro trilogy they did a good job of that. Enemies and NPCs would interact before you stepped in and that still goes on today. Today just has that extra layer of new tech to make it even better... Ryno V playing the 1812 Overture anyone? ;D

Be surprised if anyone has noticed this, as it took me months until someone told me and I saw it for myself.

Ants.

Yes, ants. But they're in Skyrim, walk past nearly any log stump and look closely at it. You will see a line of ants walking across the stump. I didn't realise this even after well over 200 hours in-game.

Also, in Skyrim if you follow a fox or rabbit they can lead you to hidden caches of loot or points of interest. So before you decide to skin them, follow them for abit next time.

I LOVE the off-map areas of Dungeon Seige 1, I would complete the game then travel aaaall the way back to the farmstead right at the very beginning to explore every inch of the map and discover every secret :3

I pretty much did the same in DS2, happily the supersecretextra dungeon was in the single player this time around so I was able to explore that too :D

Flying an elephant (vehicle) in Halo 3. Of course this was unintended to be in the game, but it's still freaking awesome.
*Extremely sorry for the crappy song, this is the best video I could find about it.

I think Guerrilla Game's Killzone 2 Bullet Ballet video showed it well, but just the reactions the Helghast had to what the player did. They'd yell, swear, scream, just to you rushing them, and the way they react to being shot.
The music selection in the Jukebox in Prey.
The radio broadcast during the boat level of Resistance 3 full of messages from people trying to find their families.
The crazy level of interactivity for the time in Duke Nukem 3D (flushing toilets, turning faucets on, etc.)
How Bethesda has HP Lovecraft references in so many of their games.

Asheron's call had a few unique mechanics going for it, one was if you attacked a certain mob in a certain area it would send out a SOS to all mobs of that type in the entire area, so you would see your whole radar go red as 100s of mobs just rushed in on your position. there was this one tower down near qualbar or something like that where if you attacked a mob near the tower you could run up into the tower and have the mobs just swarm the tower.

AC also had a wi flag it was called, where you could get tagged as "it" randomly and you would draw aggro from all mobs int he area, it was very rare and you normally heard of someone that knew someone kinda deal, so you never were 100% sure if the wi flag did exist, but one day in the statue dungeons i got flagged and every mob of the caster types came after me form every floor of the dungeon they would keep coming into whatever room i was in to attack me lol. i remember hiding back in a hall while my guildmates were out there mowing them down while they tried to mass nuke me behind the wall, this lasted all night until either i died or we left i really do not recall how we left.

the witcher games, how the people react when it rains, taking shelter etc, it always seemed to do that stuff and add that extra bit of immersion better than any other games.

fallout 2 but there was just too much omg stuff you could do in that game period. to go through it all.

skyrim modded up with hd mods, including the realistic water mods, can look just amazing when looking at waterfalls and such. also the night skies with the auroras just look amazing period.

dcu online the bit i played it in beta had some nice touches for fan service like your mentor showing up randomly while your are patrolling and tell you i have my eye on you, or make comments about your progress, plus some of the music i think was ripped out of the series and was played in the appropriate areas is lest cool the first time of few you enter those areas.

-agreed. i also like the ones in WC3 as well... i'll never forget that the tauren chieftain says "pass the peace pipe" and "puff, puff, give. that's the rule."

- the animations for unattended characters. mario sleeping (mario galaxy), sonic looking at you and tapping his feet, mega man blinking, etc.

That fact that virtually EVERY SINGLE ONE of your soldiers in Valkyria Chronicles has their own look, voice acting, personality... each of them are individuals, not a bunch of carbon copies.

The realistic gun and explosive sounds in Company of Heroes. It's just a nice little added detail, which is surprising in a RTS game

Actually, one more.

In DeusEx HR I loved the way that you could still look around whilst using the computers-
Unlike games such as Splinter Cell which pause the game. This made it all that more tense doing hacking in an open plan office with a patrol. Really nice.
