I love little details, but I also love easter eggs. The most recent one that made me smile is the System Shock 2 reference as a Bioshock trophy. Look at you, hacker.

Being able to use the computers and consoles without entering another screen in Doom 3.

The physics in Half-Life 2 and Max Payne 2 and 3.

Sander Cohen's show in Bioshock.

How Batman's clothes (and himself!) get damaged in Batman AA and AC.

Weather and day and night cycles in games like Skyrim and The Sims 3.

All the animations and crazy stuff in Saints Row 3

Kryptonian in Dragon Age!

Well there's Shadow of the Colossus, in which if you're next to some water, Agro will go over and drink from it.

Just puts a smile on my face whenever that happens. Most game developers don't usually program horses, much less any animal to do that.

Also, in Arkham City, if you look hard enough, you can find the spot where Bruce's parents were murdered. You can even get an achievement/trophy if you pay your respects to them for a certain amount of time.

Saints Row The Third, the game just has so much :)

free falling with parachutes, using a shotgun that fires sharks, robbing banks, being a contestant in a TV show, taking over the world! causing small wars in certain areas, winning a wrestling tournament while the fans count how many times I punch the champion, saving the equivalent of the statue of liberty while the song "I need a Hero" plays, become a superhero with powers and everything, overtaking a penthouse and claiming my rise to power as Kanye West "Power" song plays, getting on a jet plane and fly around killing everything! filming a movie based on Mars Attack and Star Wars, buying your very own airport that you can fill out with planes you can pimp out and then fly around, preventing the zombie apocalypse from spreading from the quarantined city...

I could go on but lets just sum it all up to Saints Row The Third the reason any gamer loves gaming

I'm a sucker for atmosphere. That's why I'm one of the four people left who like Brink.
I'm also a sucker for fantastic lighting. I'm looking at you, Lone Survivor.

In Ace Combat: Assault Horizon when you damage other planes they start leaking oil, it's in their tagline, "Make metal bleed." A little gimmicky but it's still kind of cool. Also, when you shoot down another place, and you don't always see it, you can actually see the pilot flying out of his metal wreckage.
On the series of Ace Combat, in the earlier games they put a lot of back-story and Easter-eggs in to the radio transmission that play during missions. Or how you will hear enemy pilot's cry for help if they get hit or shot down. They had a whole team at PROJECT ACES to makes those radio calls and interweave them into missions, but I don't think AC:AH has very much of that. That game is an embarrassment to the series.

Oh, and the ability to shoot people's hats off in Goldeneye. That little feature still has no equal fifteen years later!
My favorite hat-shooting moment was coming out of the bathroom vent in The Facility. He was always so confused after he lost his hat...

One of my favorite features of that game and one that I wish had been used in the Mass Effect series more often.

I had one but forgot it. I'll come back later.

EDIT: I remembered. If anyone played the 3rd Journeyman Project game on PC, there is some dialog from Arthur (your digitized friend who lives in your helmet) that made me laugh. The second time through the game I healed a fruit tree at a Buddhist temple quicker than you would normally figure out how to do it (unless you had played the game or used a strategy guide) by watering it with the Water of Life from Atlantis. This prompts Arthur to get flustered and ask, "I...what?! How did you...? Have you been reading the strategy guide again?"

The Videogame store in Mass Effect 2 was pretty cool. The Kid in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door who talked about how awesome Fire Emblem is was okay in my books.

In Age of Mythology, how battle music would start when you're in a battle.
The weather in STALKER. God, the natural transitions and of how you can see the storm clouds float away is gorgeous.
References to rock bands from all the Guilty Gear Characters. I mean, Sol Badguy's favorite hobby is listening to Queen.
How the Inquisitor in DoWII mentions her tools include fear and surprise. The Guardsmen, when equipped with a weapon, sometimes say "It's dangerous to go alone, take this." The Commissar, getting into a Chimera, says "Drive me closer; I want to hit them with my sword!" Basically, all those tiny references that game creators put into, like Blizzard and Fallout's Wild Wasteland.

"Stop going into the ladies' restroom, Jensen"

I like animation that's conscious of your gun's ammo. Having to cock the gun for each and every reload bugs me, having to cock your gun only when the magazine you pull out is empty is DAMN FINE.

In Total War: Shogun 2, how each soldier actually gets in a fight with another solider, and is killed by an actual swing of a sword/arrow/bullet.

Finding Tali getting drunk on the Normandy. That moment alone completely solidified my opinion of the entire series.

This cutscene showed to me that you can really show someone's friendship without any form of deliberate dialogue. Let's just say I haven't seen much "hanging out" cutscenes in games given this much emphasis to showcase friendship and trust rather than just resting and lazing.

I like it when ever I decide to look behind some stairs, or a tree or something that isn't completely obvious and find a treasure in a game. There is just something about finding a good hiding place, and there actually being something hidden there.

Also I like the turtles in Shadow of the Colossus. They are completely arbitrary, and yet they exist. They even hide in their shells when you approach them and Agro pokes at them.

In Little King's Story, if you fail to rescue one of your villagers from their last chance revival all their family and friends hold a funeral for them the next day. You can attend if you want to, or hide out and avoid talking to them because you know you were partly responsible because you had more important things to do than save your villagers. (If you do talk to them they really guilt trip you by accepting the death as unavoidable). Great game full of nice touches, (like the art appreciation gallery in the tent - full of art work created by real fans of the game).

And... it's kind of an overused cliche now but I remember first discovering "They killed Kenny" carved into one of the tables in Panzer Dragoon Saga. Although dated and a bit lame now, when the game was released South Park had only been out a few months.

The auroras from Skyrim come to mind. They move perfectly realistically, but they don't need to at all. They move so slow that you don't even notice it. They could have just left them static, but instead they do this:

All the atmospheric effects in that game are stunning, especially the way the clouds appear on the edges of mountains. I've never seen anything else like it.
I knew the game world was detailed, but HOLY CRAP! I guess I had never stopped to take a look. The next time I fire up Skyrim, I will direct my gaze skyward and see what there is to see. The effort the put into the environment is incredible, and it needs to be enjoyed!

I also enjoy the environmental details in ArmA II

The game world is not as fanciful as that of Skyrim, but it is realistic enough to be believable. I also love the touch that the star constellations are correct for the hemisphere that the player is supposedly operating in. You can navigate by constellations! It also features correct moon phases, tides, wind, and flying insects.

I suppose I have a love for artfully-crafted game worlds.
