Myth, or personal opinion, taste and choice?

But please don't try to convince anyone that your mac has any flexibility when it comes to what you can do with it.
All these Mac users that love trying to convince everyone of how superior their product must be getting lost among the dozens of posts by PC users claiming that Macs users are fanboyish, arrogant, self righteous bastards.

hey, can we cool the jets a little on the up and coming flamewar?

there has been some useful info grabbed here:
Macs are expensive, but well designed systems that are narrow in terms of what they can and can't run, with a loyal fanbase. Being that i'm not a MASSIVE pc gamer (the last pc game i bought was Sam and Max Series 1) I don't see games as THAT important, but I am looking at doing some sound recording and editing, and possibly branching into film.

I'm not sure how well Garage Band works for sound recording, but for editing it is pretty damn good. That said, I haven't used any PC equivalents.

For movies, iMovie is great, it has more capabilities than Windows Movie Maker and is a lot more intuitive- I taught myself how to use it and I've been able to produce some quite satisfactory projects for school etc.

If you want to get really serious you can pick up a copy of Final Cut Pro [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Cut_Pro], software thats been used on No Country for Old Men among other films. Admittedly, it is a lot more complex to use, but thats because you are definitely getting something professional for your money.

It doesn't matter that they are two different operating systems suited to two different uses, both mac users and PC users are meant to hate each other.
What about the people that use both?

I use Macs at uni and my VAIO at home and I don't have a problem with either. I'm doing a design course and Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator...you know all that stuff, work just as well on my PC as they do on Macs.

I also did a lot of research before getting a new laptop. It was either Sony VAIO or a MacBook. I settled on the VAIO simply because I am more comfortable with PC.

Agreed, Final Cut is an awesome program but I have been told by a lecturer from uni who is a Mac and PC user that the new Adobe Premier is just as good. Yet to try that out myself.

Anyways...back to the OP. You say you hate Vista and you used to love Macs. Sounds like you would be more comfortable with it.

Go Mac.

I don't get how people are still having issues with Vista. Personally, the times I use it, it works great.

As for ye olde Mac vs PC. What do you do with it mainly. If it's gaming, then why switch to an OS that doesn't get as much support? And don't come with Bootcamp, buying a Mac to mainly run Windows is retarded.
If your main use is everyday browsing, mailing, chatting etc etc then you can easily buy the Mac and use Bootcamp to switch for gaming every now and then.
Look at your main use (in hours spent) and then decide.

As for my personal taste, I find the Apple OS to be annoying and the controls unintuitive. I did like the dock, so i went to Stardock and got me ObjectDock. I find Apple hardware to be a tad pricy, for what you get. There is more choice in regular hardware, so I can more easily find a complete matching product, without having to compromise in either price or features.

The "better at Photoshop and video editing" thing is from the era of PowerPC processor, which for a while showed better floating-point performance than competing Intel chips.

Nowadays Macs use the same CPUs as other computers, so I wouldn't expect much of a difference.

Maybe if the file system is significantly better than Windows' NTFS (quite likely) you'll still see some improvement in a few I/O-intensive tasks. OS X has pretty good support for remote drives, too, so that may be what contributes to graphics and video ships picking Macs over Wintel boxes.

But, just pure CPU performance? Pretty samey.

If you want games too, I recommend a Mac and a games console.
I don't know much about software, but since I have an iPod Touch, and Windows (Vista and XP, 2 computers) I can't download jack schitt of the internet.
All of the software is Mac only!

Damn those bastards...

Your computer comes with a nVidia graphics card? WHOP DE FUCKIN DO every reasonably high end desktop/laptop has a ati or nvidia graphics card. What matters is weather it's just the dregs of 2 gen old technology.... oh screw it these people never learn
fine by me if you want to stay whit windows until your more old and more rotten inside thats fine... but dude do research... dont make a joke of yourlself ok? this is the lates macbook and we are talking about laptos here!!! not the full pc ok?

I love my Vista. Any problems I've had with it haven't had anything to do with Vista (Internet Explorer, video card, etc.) so once I got my broken video card replaced and Google Chrome, it's been perfect. Macs are great if you're into editing movies, Photoshop, and all of that fun media stuff. But if you're not going to be messing with that often, stick with PC.
GO CHROME!!!!!!!! Vista hasn't given me any problems whatsoever. I don't have anything against macs but I don't feel like learning a new OS.

Watch these mac commercial spoofs. Very unbiased and funny too. [http://tv.truenuff.com/mac/performance.php]

Is this meant to be ironic?

Also in reply to the Original Poster - jim_doki :-

I switched from Windows 98 to Mac OS X (I now run Leopard on a 2GB Mac Mini with a 24" Cinema display, Bose Speakers, WACOM graphics tablet, no-button mouse, Apple Pro Keyboard, External Drive for Time Machine backups, Firewire scanner and a USB 'thingy' to let me use an Xbox 360 wireless gamepad with it) mainly due to problems with the virus software slowing the machine down, multiple Blue Screens of Death, 32 OS Reinstalls and two failures on Sony's part to honor the Extended Warranty and fix it crashing when I unplugged the mouse.

As you can tell from my system specifications I put most of my budget into the display - which cost a lot - however, I have never regretted going for '> 2 x A4 pages' and find that it is this that gives me the greatest productivity, not the merely adequate CPU (a 1.66 Ghz Intel Core Duo). Now, I wouldn't recommend this Mac to anyone for games, but I have an Xbox 360 for that.

Only if you are very rich should you consider going for a Mac Pro, however with the right software you can run Windows games:

However, I would suggest that the OP get at least 2GB of RAM. The new laptops look ok, but I would advise that you wait for Snow Leopard to be pre-installed on them as it will make the system faster and by then they will have ironed out any kinks in production of the early machines.

I've used both Macs and PCs extensively, and I can say that Macs are the most overrated machines on the planet. People who say that editing movies, Photoshop and such are easier on Macs are talking out their asses, as thats basically just what Apple says in their adverts. Their interface is not more user friendly (again, a myth put forward by Apple), hardly anything works on it, they aren't noticeably faster and they do bloody crash. In fact, I found the Mac crashed more than my PC. Actually, my PC crashes once in a blue moon, so everyone complaining that their PC crashes all the time should get it checked out.
QFE!
I have been using Photoshop on my PC for many, many years, and it has never once been a problem. In fact, for a good number of months during the Intel transition, Photoshop was significantly better on the PC than on a Mac. As for sound editing, Mac's have ProTools, PCs have Nuendo and SADiE (Bothe better), video FinalCut vs. Sony Vegas and Avid.

As for the interface: Macs generally have one way of doing a task, while PCs are more flexible. Putting all your application shortcuts and open windows on the same, moving, hidden tray makes it a lot more difficult to find things than the Windows taskbar. Maximize windows by dragging, but they're never really maximized. One thing in windows that I instinctively do is: To close a window, I blindly move my mouse up to the screen corner and click, because the top right pixel is counted as part of the close button. I know it's little, but a bunch of little things can add up to a lot.

On the topic of crashing: I use macs in the recording studio very frequently, and in my experience, they certainly crash more often than my PC. The mac minis used for the sound analysis program need to be restarted nearly every time I come into the studio, and the pro-tools machines freeze so often, "Beach ball of doom" is an incredibly common phrase around the studio.

On the topic of Hacking/viruses: Yes, PCs do have more Viruses. Because they have so much more marketshare, and are not closed platform. However, as soon as you download a good antivirus program, that point is moot. As far as remote hacking, in a recent competition, hackers went at Vista SP1, Mac OS 10.5, and Linux (Can't remember which distro). As expected, Linux won. Surprisingly, though, Mac OS fell in hours, while it took 2 days of competition to crack Vista SP1.

Oh, and I like Vista. I've been using it since release, and now have it installed on all 3 of my computers. On modern hardware, the performance differences between it and XP are insignificant, and the added little features make it a lot easier to use. On the surface, it looks like not a lot has changed, but when you dig deeper, it makes things much easier to take care of. (I just wish it has a find/replace on the Registry.)

and yes im shure your machine is better than mine, but at what cost? if i want i can ask mine whit wherever i want so whats the big difference???

There used to be a time when Macs had a niche' they were flipping amazing at GFX and Video production. The PC's of that era simply could not compete (Something to do with the motorola cpu's and the maths used on them I think). So it made sense to let the graphics guys and the video guys have their macs and provide samba servers for colaboration.

Now that Macs are effectively PC's in disguise the function for me has blurred, macs strong point now appears to be looks and the ability to run XP/vista with OSX. But their price is a bitter pill to swallow and frankly unless you either love macs or you distinctly need a mac for a given need I do not see the advantage in owning one.

Ironically I recently came into possession of an IMAC (the one which has the round base and screen all in one) and a Titanium laptop. Neither at present work as I need to get some leads and I am honestly interested to see how they perform.

My only real gripe with Apple or Some Apple Mac fans is the swagger they carry themselves with. I am sorry but the adverts that were nothing but an endless put down effort on PC's. Come on Apple, do you really need to tell people PC's suck buy an apple? how about selling apple on its merits as opposed to its competitions possible flaws? Rather weak if you ask me.

Thanks for reading.
