Yeah, I don't think i'll ever forget the graph some dude created explaining what Tali's sweat must taste like... or the Tali love-doll. *shudders*

And I know what you mean about Liara. I admit I felt the change to the "dark side" in ME2 felt a little forced, but she found a very healthy balance in 3. A good character overall, and also fills the Bro spot for my Shep.
What? Graph... sweat? What the fuck?

Garrus Vakarian, because let's face it, he's Garrus fucking Vakarian. The biggest selling point for me on Garrus is that he feels incredibly real. He's your friend no matter what, and he doesn't question you (not only because you're his CO, but because you're his bro). Just a great character, one of my favorites in any game ever.
Next would probably be Mordin. Incredibly funny and charming, and talking to him in ME3 about his regret over the genophage... man. Such an amazingly written character.
Rounding out the list is going to have to be Wrex. I adored him in the original game and saw him as this kind of weird, gruff surrogate daddy to my Shep(s). He's a badass with a heart of gold, and another true bro. I may or may not have shed tears when he called me his sister.

This might be cheating, but I only have one for the "worst" squadmate. I'm sorry, but I absolutely love all my squaddies!! Excluding...
Jacob.
Now, I didn't mind him in ME2. Sure, he was boring, but I didn't spend a lot of time getting to know him my first time around. Mainly because every time I tried to hold a conversation with the guy, my Shep would misinterpret the "hello" dialogue option with the "please stick your dick in me" one. He was sub-par in combat and he is the ONLY squadmate who will repeatedly die on me. Bah.
I didn't hate him, didn't even dislike him, just felt pretty impartial.
Then ME3 rolled around.
I didn't think it was possible, but they made his character worse. The biggest red flag was hearing that he cheats on femShep. You have to have one hell of a deathwish for that. He says "I wasn't going to wait forever". Shep was incarcerated for SIX MONTHS. Plus, considering that he and Brynn met over a year ago... implications unpleasant. Not only that, but he was reduced to little more than a stereotype: cheats on woman and impregnates girlfriend out of wedlock. Well done, BioWare!
But, what made my impartiality turn to rage and hatred was Jacob's comment on Shep's love life: "The Normandy is your only love". It's stupid, but I wish I could've punched him for saying that. I express that I, too, would like to settle down someday, and you tell me THAT? Sorry, Jacob, but I'm getting your ass killed on every damn playthrough of ME2 from here on out.

I was under the impression that it was going to be part of it, but it was cut. In fact if something was cut it was normally Ashley's lines with Shep. There was a whole scene where she explained why she was having trouble trusting Shep and then they sort it out. It looked like a good scene. Ashley for me had potenial, but BioWare seems to have cut all the good bits out.

In no particular order, since that seems somehow wrong...

Mordin, for being by turns brilliant, cruel, funny and obssessively logical. He didn't look like a badass, but by the Goddess he was one. His story and character development were brilliantly executed, and the Tuchanka mission in ME3 just brought it all home. Awesome. Besides, you've got to love him for his Gilbert and Sullivan recitals.

Garrus, for all the reasons everyone else has given, basically. He's with you in all three games, so you get to see his personality grow. He's Space Batman, and he knows it. Even though I play an Infiltrator, I still ended up taking Garrus with me a lot, on account of his sheer swesomeness. He also gets some of the most straight faced yet hilarious lines in the game. Reach and flexibility, the banter in 3 between him and Joker, the game of one-upmanship with Vega. Yeah, it was always worth bringing him with me, just to see what he'd come out with.

And you know what? Sue me, I'm going for Kaidan. I'm one of those weird people who didn't find him whiny or boring, and actually thought he was a bloody decent guy. Again, the skills he had worked well with my Sheps' setup, so he came on most missions with me. OK, he threw a bit of a bitchfest on Horizon, but in it's way, it worked. Not everyone was going to be fine and dandy with what Shep was up to, and that was the role he played in the story, to question you. It actually had me worried that he'd still hate me by the time ME3 rolled round, so whatever Bioware did, the man got to me. It's probably obvious by now, but yes, I did the romance path with this guy, and really enjoyed it. It was a bit awkward, but also very sweet. Damnit, I'm a sucker for this sort of thing.

Honourable mentions though to Wrex and Thane.

There's not many characters that I didn't like, but Jacob can go swing for it. Didn't like him at all, though it looks like I'm not the only one. I found his personal arc was pretty boring, and his skill mix was forgettable - Don't think I ever used him apart from when there was no other choice. Plus it made me angry that whenever FemShep went to talk to him on the Normandy, she would always adopt this flirty pose and tone with him. Just... No, FemShep. NO.

I'm not fired about Ashley either. But then she might have endeded up a bit explodey in ME1, so it's not as if I've had a lot of exposure to her. Even when she was around, I never really used her - Kaidan was always a better complement to my Shep's skills, plus he's a hottie.
Well then. You just stole... everything I was going to say. Literally. Everything.

Wait, wait... I liked Liara too. The balance and melding between her ME1 personality (naive, innocent everygirl) and ME2 personality (driven, darker) was fantastic in ME3, and while I hadn't been too fussed about her in either of the previous games, I ended up really liking her at the end of ME3.

My top 3 are:
1) Legion - I'm a huge fan of the Geth. I can't really point at any one thing about them, but the Geth are easily my favorite race in any Sci-Fi setting I've ever experienced. Being able to talk to one was amazing, and he was easily the best squadmate in ME2 for my playstyle (ie, biotic charge things and shotgun away), so he definitely tops this list.

2) Garrus - Because he's fucking Garrus. He was my Shepard's bestest bro, full stop. Plus he's the Turian Batman. There's no way he can't make this list.

3) Grunt - He's a Krogan, figuring out who and what he is. I greatly enjoyed interacting with Grunt and watching his character develop throughout the game. He's just awesome.

Bottom 3:
1) Jacob - Blandy McBlanderson. Absolutely nothing there to actually like. I used him on that first couple missions when you have to, then promptly forgot he existed. There's just nothing to his character one way or the other.

2) Samara - She's straight fan service. It's silly and decidedly unnecessary. I did find the Justicar code mildly interesting, but everything else about her was ...uninspired.

3) Jack - She just rubbed me the wrong way. I couldn't stand her "OH GOD THE WORLD IS OUT TO GET ME! WAAAAAAA!" attitude. All she'd talk about is how hard she'd had it and how much life sucks. It pissed me off to no end, to the point where the only reason I even bother with her loyalty mission/talking to her is for the XP.

Mcoffey said:
3) Garrus - Because he's Garrus. When Kaiden died, the Bro-Position was left open and Garrus was more than able to fill the spot. I only wish you had been able to fist bump him in front of an explosion... just once.
Good god, I couldn't agree more with this. Shepard really, really needed to fistbump Garrus at some point in ME3. It didn't even need to be in front of an explosion, but it really should have happened somewhere.

Mcoffey said:
I also think it's interesting that people mistakenly call Ashley racist, but no one cries foul when Tali is openly prejudiced against the Geth.
Very true. I really like Tali, and she was the romance option I went with, but the automatic, overwhelming hatred of all things Geth really did rub me the wrong way. All of the Quarians are retardedly racist against the Geth, especially considering the details of the Morning War we discover in ME3.

Kind of hard to think about. I really don't like lists or rankings, so let's look at it another way. what characters make me want to play Mass Effect as a series?
Thane. I love Thane. I love everything about him. I wanted to see his arch, I wanted to learn more about him. I loved everything about him.
Mordin. Mostly same as above with the added benefit of a complex conversation on morality. The only thing I don't like about him is that I generally don't like having him in my squad in combat.
I will also throw mentions to Garrus and Jack. I kind of enjoyed talking with both of them and having both in my squad. I liked seeing Jack's arch and I loved being a conscience to Garrus, though I might need to go back to ME1 and remind me why I liked Garrus and Liara so much in that game (likely because I only had 6 to chose from).
So who do I not care for?
Miranda. I couldn't answer that one faster. There was no part of her I cared for, other than in my insanity mode run because she has both warp and overload. If I could never speak with her again, that would be fine by me.
Added to that Samara. Didn't care for her character arc at all. I didn't ever really feel like she added anything to the team in 2 other than being the only character who had 1 specific ability (reave).
Lastly Grunt, kind of. I didn't care for him in 2 and almost regretted actually recruiting him. He always felt like a loose cannon in 2 and like a future conflict I was going to have to deal with. I liked him more in 3 when he felt like a team player.
Honestly, I liked most of the squad members or at least can find something redeeming in the ones I don't care for.

Yeah, it gets passed around the Bioware social network and 4chan every now and then as nightmare fuel. Basically some guy made some chart or graph or something that showed the chemical compounds that, for some reason, must exist in tali and therefore must determine the taste of her sweat.

Ugh...

And as for the doll, well...

There are more "detailed" pictures of it floating around, if you really want to look.

I tell myself sometimes that it must be an elaborate hoax, and that no one would ever truly 'use' that...

And then I see the sweat chart again, and weep silently.
...

That... is about a dozen different kinds of disturbing.

Aaaand that answers my number one

number 2 would be Legion, yes his speech pattern could be a little grating BUT, I couldn't help but admire how the geth were akin to parentless children, fumbling around eager to learn but not to start conflict, and how legion still beleived a relationship between the geth and quarian (organics in general really) were possible despite every experience up until he met shephard always ending in conflict. Just something endearing about the little guy, sniff WHY DID HE HAVE TO SACRIFICE HIMSELF! Sorry just finished ME3 the experience is still fresh.

Number 3 a toss up between Thane and Samara, Thane because he wasn't an assassin for the lul's or petty veangence (obvious exception not withstanding) but more of a job. He is also an example of a welling meaning but ultimately failing parent that is actually well balanced in the portrayal. Samara because the idea of a matriarch (AKA grandma age) still beating down an entire platoon of asari mercenaries barely breaking a sweat. Also I liked how she knew what had to be done but in the end held a sort of respect for Morinth in the end. Always found that a little touching

Bottom 1 Zaeed Say what you will about Jacob at least he is so bland it loops back to being memorable, Zaeed? not so much.

bottom 2 james I played a fem shep and simply put it was wierd having him come onto me like a teenager in heat. Yes that is really it.

Bottom 3 Garrus, AAAAH fooled you for a second didn't I? really its Ashley, I have no tolerance in game or real life for racism and at least Tali could grow out of hers.

It's a three-way tie, really, between:
-Tali. She's adorably awkward. I like her as a character and as a romance option, even if her creepier fans do try to ruin everything.
-Wrex. He's my bro. That is all.
-Mordin. Mad scientist. Has some of the best dialogue. Sings Gilbert and Sullivan. *inhales sharply* Awesome.

Honorable mentions:
Garrus: Snarky Space Batman is my BFF.
Legion: A very entertaining and interesting character with many great lines. Pity you generally have to recruit him so late in the game you never see most of them.
EDI: She really became part of the crew through ME2, so having her make the jump to squadmate was a welcome occurrence. Now she can troll organics wherever she goes.

Bottom 3
1. Miranda. I don't have the searing hate for her as some do, but she is my least favorite. I understand where her issues come from, but...meh. Basically, for most of my thoughts on her, just listen to Tali's drunken musings on her. It's a shame, because her abilities make her one of the most useful party members.
2. Jacob. Nice boring guy in ME2. Never has much interesting stuff to say. Cheats on you in ME3 if you were in the 2% or whatever of players that chose him. Not cool, man. Kasumi has no taste in men (no offense meant to Keiji).
3. Ashley. I didn't like the anti-alien thing. I know she can grow out of it somewhat, but acting nice to her seems to make her think you wanna bump uglies with her (which held no appeal whatsoever), so I just stopped talking to her after a while. She has some redemption in 3, as she has more entertaining scenes than Kaidan does (like when she gets fall-down drunk).

Dishonorable mentions:
Morinth: Never recruited her in any playthrough, but never liked what I saw of her. Practically pointless, too, as you only meet her in ME3 once, and that's as a "boss" fight.
Kaidan: Nice guy, but boring as toast. Plus he has Carth's voice so I get traumatizing flashbacks.
James: A big beef tank. Too confrontational for my taste. Makes up for it for some funny scenes (like his reaction to hearing about Tali and Shepard's relationship, or his use of "percussive maintenance" to disable the turrets on Rannoch).

Eh. He is a jerkass, but he has a lot of hilarious lines and is a pretty fun subversion of the idea of the "helpful precursor". I also like how he totally shook up Liara's whole viewpoint regarding the Protheans. Lastly, he does develop somewhat, if you talk with him. In the beginning, he doesn't give a damn about anything but beating the Reapers, considering the idea of "peace" to be counterproductive and foolish, but on Earth (assuming you convinced him not to use the memory shard), he actively plans to travel the galaxy after defeating the Reapers, observing and learning about all of the races through his own eyes.

He's definitely not my favorite overall squadmate (probably somewhere in the #7-#8 position out of all 3 games' squadmates), but he's entertaining at the very least, which is more than I can say for some other party members.

Top three bottom three hmmm. alright. Lets do it, I'll be including a 'special mentions' catorgary too.

Top 3. (in no particular order)

Mordin Solus: I love this guy, he can sing, he can shoot he can do SCIENCE! But aside from that he was a surprise. When I saw the character design. I instantly thought, 'cold logical'. IE: That he'd have a hollow voice be a cold uncaring scientist. Instead...we got a face talking, over thinking, emphatic, funny to be around guy. I mean he just caught me by surprise. His story is one of redemption. He doesn't get emo about it though he just deals with it. For me his death was a loss but at the same time the culmination of his character arc. "had to be me, someone else could have gotten wrong." I came to tears when he started singing.

Garrus Vakarian (also known as Space Batman): What more can I say, this guy is awesome. If your a male shep he is your bro. Your brother in arms. You and him have been threw hell walked threw fire and came out smoking. He's cocky (with good reason). He has a strong sense of justice, and (if you did his loyalty mission that way) capable of forgiving even those who wronged him. And if your Femshep romanced him your in for probably one of the best Female Romance options. This is a guy who stays cool as a Brute charges his position but start flirting with him and his cool breaks down. I loved the lines and the scenes.

Legion: Yeah you probably saw this one coming. He was my fav companion in ME2. If you want proof the Geth have a soul and were wronged look no further. Legion sought you out, welded a piece of your armor to it's body. All because you 'opposed the Old Machines'. In your journies and conversations with him you learn, and later confirm, that the Geth/Quarien war was started by the Quareions and not the Geth. The Geth as a whole are infinitely interesting to me. Even with my feelings about the ending, I want to know if now that they have true sentience if a culture with the Quaren (no I can't spell that word worth shit.) will be created. I want to see what they become after this.

Bottom Three.

(jacob isn't on list cause he just sucks)

Miranda: "lalala look at me, I was created to be perfect, lalalala tits, lalalala perfect ass. lalala I have daddy issues." Just like every fuck body else on the team. Sorry, team'sssss.

Ashly: A lot of people say she isn't a raciest. Well if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck...it's a raciest. (Look up 'da furher's face for some wtfness and laughs.) Still about five metric fuck tons more interesting then Jacob though...but that's not a big contest.

James/Kaiden: While Kaiden had an interesting background. His anger, resentment, and lack of trust just makes him come across as a giant twat. And James.....While I don't hate him as much as I did the other's on the Bottom three he's just bland. Not Jacob levels of bland. But bland.

Special Mentions: Grunt, Wrex, Thane, Samara, Javik.

Favorite love interests. (besides Liara.)

Tali: TALIIIIIIIIII!!! :D Oh comeon who didn't like her. Her romance is heartwarming especially since it could kill her to get her jiggy on. I haven't seen her ME3 romance bits so just from the ME2 I loved it.

Jack: Ahhh jack. A lot of great dialogue is locked unless you paragon romance her. For those that haven't heard it Youtube it cause I'm not gonna spoil it here. Her romance is different from the others. Jack, when it comes to love and being loved. Is broken, and the romance is about putting that broken person back together. This is why she cries in your love scene in ME2 she's letting her guard down and just letting go of her anger. When that was all she had for so long.

He's the main reason why I regret buying the "From Ashes" DLC for 800 points. Sure I get some nice weapons and extra suits for my crew.. but the prothean alone, Javik... he makes me want to delete From Ashes and forget it existed. Why do I despise the guy? He always acts negative and throughout having him with me for dozens of missions in ME3, all he does is judge other people and acting superior. He's not even special really.. he's a soldier- why couldn't he of been a biotic or vanguard? Not just that, but his accent is Jamaican which doesn't make sense to me at all.

I know of his past, his life... but it's still no excuse. His entire being is one big "I'm ruthless therefore I must also put others down despite inflicting the peace". Seriously, when a Hanar has a moment of pure joy being in the face of a prothean.. he says, "A pity we did not teach them to speak better." Excuse me man, you're pretty much insulting an entire race that has looked up to you as Gods and all you can say is that regardless of the praise you're getting? That's it, I am deleting From Ashes off my Xbox now (lol I am raging and I don't care.) The guy is a douche, which I give leeway to Jack from ME2 because she had a messed up childhood who later becomes stable and cool. Javik never progresses.. he just remains a douche till the very end and I don't have time for him.. sorry to say. Even if the DLC was free, I would pass.
No excuse? He grew up as planets were getting blown up left and right, there was no time for joy in his life as he was taught to fight as soon as he could, his crew were then indoctrinated as he had to kill them all, then he had to watch as his species were wiped out. Then when he gets out of stasis he sees that no one but Shepard listen to the warnings and that the species responcible for this cycle, are less advanced than he was. So all in all if he had been positive I don't think it would have fit what he'd been through. I understand people not wanting him on their ship due to the negativity, but I think his personality suits him. Also I liked having a realist in the ME universe, I was kinda getting sick of don't worry it will be fine that every other squad member kept telling me.
