Quite simply, what constitutes a gentleman in this day and age? Is it manners? Sophistication? Learning? Or is it still, to a degree, a matter of social status?

Discuss.

Gonna have to go with all those options. It takes both manners, an education, and appreciation for culture, and a bit of social status (vagrancy isn't as glamorous as it used to be) to be considered a gentleman.

that never stopped me! (grumbles) people a few years younger than me these days give up so easily.

you could say it was an educated sophisticated upper class wealthy man. I'd just say a man who is noble; polite, kind, doesn't take advantage of women. I think if you read the poem 'If?' by Rudyard Kipling it's old but I think still very relevant.

Yeh, I think that's the answer. And, as a few others have stated, education and appreciation of the arts should be a prerequisite too.

Gentleman (noun) : Someone who is too nice for their own good. Often seen penniless in the gutter because "They really looked like they needed the money.". Often male, but tends towards the neuter as a greeting in mixed company.

requires mutton chops, gold pocket watch, and a british accent.

But in modern times a gentleman is best discribed as a realativly caring but none the less empithatic person with the mean to support them selves along with a sizeable dispossible income.

I think it all comes down to whoever can find the country that thousands of their country's soldiers have died in on a map.

Money, class, wit, chivalry, nice person. The first two only help.

EDIT: Just a thought but if a guy if funny is he not a gentleman? All humor is based in malice and the best jokes are spur of the moment.
