A coward is incapable of exhibiting love (like all the fanboys who are quite content to hire and kill hookers, but never love a real woman):it is the prerogative of the brave. - Mohandas Gandhi.
Thats from page 19- section 0014.

forget vampires, that shit is CRAZY

This is not good gaming patent. This game is so linear. What would be a good gaming patent includes having different but equal promises to different choices so that it would not bother players which choices would give the best rewards. That's what makes moral choice systems sucky, because one side has the best toys, the other has shittyness.

Oh, and choices shouldn't have good or bad, it would just be choices in which what you think would be the best decision from the event and any choice you make have different BUT equal rewards.

Of course it's bizzare, unrealistic, ludicrous, unworkable, and unprogrammable... hence the thread title. Any gamer who isn't brain-dead from too many rounds of (insert your most hated game here) would recognize that.

But keep reading-- see how deep the rabbit-hole goes. The entire reason I posted this garbage is because when you actually read past the goofy-ass flowcharts, it actually ascends to a higher level of nonsense! It's like Ur-crazy or Uber-nuts... I dunno. Words are failing me, when probably means I should go pass out.

Oh my! That was crazy.
I do like his idea for a Left 4 Dead mod, though: The player is surrounded by a horde of zombies/communists infected with the Marxist virus (seriously) that leaves them disfigured and grotesque. And they attack you by handing out pamphlets and Marxist propaganda. And they can only be saved by qouting Hayek or the Founding Fathers. Right...

What?

What the hell is that for? What does it do?

It's even more confusing than games that play themselves!
It's an actual schematic for the design of a game (and yeah, that's how they script 'em usually). Basically, it looks like the guy wants to patent the concept of a game that uses historical moral/philosophical systems as a basis for how the player should make his decisions and how he is either punished or rewarded based upon said decisions.

The guy's name is Elliot McGucken, and he is, in the vernacular, crazier than a shithouse rat.

Here's his blog, but be forewarned: if you read it, you'll understand why you should be glad that insanity is just a contaminant and not communicable.
here--man that needed a tinyurl [http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/DrElliotMcGucken/20090709/2322/The_Novel_quotGold_45_RevolverIdeas_Have_Consequences_Moral_Premisequot_Game_Technologies_Will_Be_Worth_Billions_of_Dollars.php]

I find myself with a sick fascination about this, the same sort of blending of interest and loathing that compels rubberneckers to look at a gruesome car-crash.
Wow it isn't very often you can physically feel your brain cells dying (I am pretty sure it was suicide).

Shoot woman (with magical 45), save world. Ayn Rand is crying tears of pride in... what's objectivist heaven? The NYSE? Sure.
Interesting thing, though, for a game based on choice, the opportunity to not quote is severely lacking. Hrmm.

Seriously, this guy is batshit-fucking-LOCO

A lot of the text is TL:DR, but just go peruse the diagrams for a laugh, and be sure to browse the intro to the text on pg 18. Seriously, it left me speechless, you guys know how much I love to talk...
That guy is batshit, you weren't lying! If you're looking for the profound, it won't ever be found inside a video game. It will be inside The Illiad, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Ishmael, L'etranger and a library's worth of life-altering epics and philosophy books. Those philosophies can be applied to gaming, yes, but it should never ever be the focus. Video games are my escape from reality. They're the last two hours of my day before I resign to bed to wake up and go back to work. I'm not saying it can't bring into question morality, existence and other profound topics. I'm saying that morality takes a back seat to a sawed-off shotgun and a few grenades. What this guy is proposing is nothing more than a video choose-your-adventure book.

Edit: I'd also like to comment on how biased this man's ideals are. Good = USA Bad = Marx/Lenin. Good equals the Bible but good also equals shooting someone in the face that he doesn't agree with. I bet this guy humps the tv while he watches Glenn Beck every afternoon.

In reality, this may be genius. Not because this douche knows how to make a good game, but because he knows how to make a good patent.

In my job I have to deal with patents every now and again. If he is awarded this patent, it is almost garanteed that someone will but it from him to not have a patent infringement. Or someone can produce a game with mildly similar qualites and he can sue for patent infringement. However, I don't think he will get the patent as I can think of many games that would be examples of prior art. Or if he gets the patent, any patent infringement could be nullified by prior art.

Many people write patents just to own the idea, not because they will actually do something with it. They realize someone else might do something with it in the future, so might as well claim it now.
