I'm gonna have to stick with the flags from Assassins Creed, seeing how all it got you was achievements XP

Like many other people, fuck you Assassin's Creed 1 with your stupid flags and your stupid templars. I even got a guide online, missed a flag, and decided, screw this, I don't get anything for this anyways. Didn't mind the feathers in ACII or in AC:B.

All of them.

The last ones I tried to get were the tapes from BioShock. I found all but one. And I couldn't get to it because the door to the room it was in wouldn't open for some reason.

And GTAV's pidgins. I'm not hunting down something like 250 pidgins.

In fact the only collectables i liked in any game were in the original Just Cause. But the location of all of them is reveled to you at the start of the game. So its only a matter of actually getting them. Still saw it as a pointless waste of time but at least it was easy.

I had a difficult time tracking down briefcases in fallout 3: op. Anchorage. I finally gave up after a while.

Assassin's Creed had flags and templars.
Assassin's Creed 2 had feathers and flags.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood had flags. (and ten feathers, so nothing major there)

On the other side..

Fallout 3's bobbleheads made for good hunting as they offered pretty good rewards as well.

Any game where 100% collection is easily missed. I remember trying to get all the log entries in Metroid Prime back in the day, but missing some ice bat that only spawned during an early portion of the game. That was great.

Alternatively, something like Dragon Quest IX, that takes hundreds of hours to 100% all the collectible crap.

I also wasn't a fan of Super Mario Galaxy 2s "have fun going back through all these levels" Post-Game Green Star hunt.

I would say Team Fortress 2's hats, for two major reasons:

1. The methods of obtaining the hats is very convoluted (unless you get an extremely lucky hat drop), either by crafting them (which takes an absurd amount of resources and in many cases will create a random hat that you may or may not want), or find someone who has the hat you want and is willing to make a reasonable trade.

2. Valve releases new batches of hats on a regular basis, making it an ongoing struggle for collectors.

Fortunately I don't really care about hats. I'm content to just play the maps and help my team out, and if I happen to get some hats along the way then I consider it to be a neat little bonus.

Anything that isn't rewarding in itself for doing them. For example, AC2's feathers is a no-no, because the reward is from finding all of them, not each feather, while the glyphs were very interesting to go through, and were a reward in themselves for finding. Infamous' dead drops and bioshocks diaries would fall into this good category. Every other collectable can go to hell.

Infinite Undiscovery's Treasure Trove achievement.

Sunk 40 hours in, missed one measly event that led to one measly key item, accidentally saved after.

Anger.

Anything in Donkey Kong 64.
Rare and their old collect-a-thons, oh dear.

I don't think it's as bad as Banjo Kazooie though, you don't get punished as much when you screw up. It made getting 101% a lot easier.

For me it would probably be the musical notes in Banjo Kazooie (n64 version). It's so stupid that you need to collect them in one go. Gotta turn off the n64? Too bad! You will need to find the notes again! One note left? Haha! Oh what's that? You died? Tough luck! Get searching again, hey this time you're probably going to overlook some unless you remember where you got all those jiggies!

Surprised no one's said this, but the one that really twists my knickers are the al bhed translation thingies in FF10. It goes letter by damn letter. Are you kidding me? So then you get words with half the right letters and half the wrong letters and still no clue what these people are saying to you. Bad Squenix. Very very bad. Never found them all and came to hate the al bhed for speaking, not in their own language, but in gobstopping CODE. Screw you people with your spiral pupils. Your Blitzball team sucks anyway.

While I'm ragging on Square, how bout the damn puppies in Kingdom Hearts. I'd find this big awesome treasure chest and be like "ooh, sweet, something cool for my gummi ship or an awesome accessory." No, it's puppies. Of course, the parents will give you gifts if you go to their house in Twilight Town, but I'd forget half the time. The reward for getting them all was getting to see that little teaser vid with blindfolded Riku and what turns out to be Roxas... but I'd already watched that on the internet, Kingdom Hearts, and since the PS2 had no social network what's the point of getting 100% completion if I can't brag about it?

I just realized that last sentence was long and rambling. And thanks for that, captcha. "Grilled Cheese", really? I'm hungry enough as it is without you making me think of food.

Assassins Creed takes the cake for me, (I didn't even attempt to collect the feathers...) but infamous blast shards were pretty bad too.

Fable.... both the dolls in fable 2 and the legendary weapons in fable 3 require that you trade with other players to get them.... PAIN IN THE ASS

I would also say the pigeons from GTA IV. I had the same problem as you did and what do you even get as a reward for those bastards?
You get an achievement trophy and the lamest attack chopper to ever be put in a game: it shoots spitballs and doesn't spawn anywhere near any of Niko's safehouses. Actually, most of the time it didn't spawn at all.

That one gets my vote too, not just because the rewards were really stupid and pointless but because you had to hunt down 200 of the damn things.

It's hard to go from crazy arsenal at your house to crap chopper somewhere in the city.

That aside, I like the fact that you had to shoot them and chance getting chased by cops. It made things kind of interesting.

The feathers in AC II and those damn flags in AC, I gave up since it was taking up way too much time to find all those damn things.
