Sir Ian Mckellen, both Magneto and Gandalf, that's pretty bad ass. I also had the pleasure of meeting him during a bit of work as an extra for the Hobbit :D

The usual ones are taken, so I'll go with Lt. Col. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paddy_Mayne]Paddy Mayne. [http://www.badassoftheweek.com/mayne.html] The man was off his rocker, he relaxed by "wrecking hotels and fighting dockers". He was an international quality rugby player too (a manly sport for manly men, if you're unaware), capped six times for Ireland and selected for the British Lions.

Oh, and did I mention that he was a founding member and at one point commanding officer of the SAS? Won the DSO four times, as well as the Croix de Guerre, the Legion d'Honneur and should have won the Victoria Cross (not just being petty here, Parliament and the King both protested that he should have won it). The man makes every depiction of the violent Irishman or badass SAS guy stereotypes look like pussies.

Somebody already mentioned The List, so I don't have to post it. Instead, I will post one of the many, many others who have not so far been mentioned, Aki Ra [http://www.badassoftheweek.com/aki-ra.html]. What this man does is so balls out crazy and insane on a level that there is no word to describe it. It makes me feel ill just thinking about it and it is totally badass.

Ok so I'm going to be the first to mention Churchill. Actually I nominate all three. Fighting Jack has been mentioned already, do I really need to explain why for Winston and finally his ancestor John Churchill who rose from being a servant to being one of the most powerful men in 18th century Europe.

Honourable mentions to:
William Marshal aka the greatest knight who ever lived
Saladin
Genghis Khan
Edward I of England
Honda Tadakatsu
Blackbeard
Henry Morgan
Francis Drake
Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington
Xiahou Dun

So after looking at the greatest men in history, I was simply wondering who the Escapists favorite badasses are.

My vote goes for Mad Jack Churchill. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Churchill]

Also, I'm sure this has already been a thread, but I do not care. That much. Every time you mention it my soul will break more :(
Damn it... ninfa'd by the OP... That's all I thought when I saw the title! :p

The guy is a damn legend, First to surf the Severn Bore, carrying a longbow and claymore in WWII... goddamn surviving! Makes me proud to be in the British Forces! :D

It is hard to beat badassery of that caliber.

Do YOU carry a sword? He said you need one to be properly armed ._.

I see no mustache, so I assume you are in the background. :{D

At least I'm assuming you have one, all signs seem to point to 'yes' :|

Teddy Roosevelt was shot during a speech. And kept going anyway.
His horse died at one point during a journey, and ended up taming a moose instead.

My vote goes for him.

This guy. Not because he has an insane kill count or survived extreme injury (yes on both counts) but because its hard to believe such a guy really existed in our modern day age of cynism.
Basically the guy was the archetypical knight from fairytales, truly chivalrous in his behavior and needing only to kill a dragon and rescue a few princesses to complete fairytale knight image.

Most notable exploit was singled handedly holding a bridge against 200 spaniards in the battle of Garigliano. Considering this was during the spanish era of invincibility (for 300 years they never lost a battle, a record unmatched in history afaik) its especially remarkable.

Furthermore guy was a decent commander and an apparently rates as one of the best cavalry leaders of all time according to wiki.

I'm going to have to go with the 'The Lone Viking At Stamford Bridge'

Blocked passage of the Saxon army by standing alone and stalwart on a bridge, killing 40 men before being stabbed by a Saxon in a barrel armed with a long spear underneath the bridge. Who knows how many he would have killed if that cunning saxon wasn't there.

Mustaches or swords?

I'm just going to leave off on that. Don't want to derail my first thread :p

[HEADING=1]Genghis Kahn!!![/HEADING]

Genghis Khan [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghengis_Kahn] (1162? ? August 1227), born Temujin, was the founder and Great Khan (emperor) of the Mongol Empire, which became the largest contiguous empire in history after his demise.

QUOTES:

?The greatest happiness is to scatter your enemy, to drive him before you, to see his cities reduced to ashes, to see those who love him shrouded in tears, and to gather into your bosom his wives and daughters.?

?It is not sufficient that I suceed - all others must fail.?

?I am the punishment of God...If you had not committed great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you.?

[HEADING=2]The people the rest of you are suggesting are LOSERS compared to the true historical EMPEROR OF ALL MEN!!![/HEADING]

Benkei.

Japanese warrior monk.

Suspected to be a demon.

Grew over 2 metres tall.

Held a bridge on his own in order to protect Yoshitsune just so he could commit suicide in peace, killing over 300 enemy soldiers in the process, and eventually died standing up, a deterrent to the enemy even after his death.

You just can't out-badass that.

Well I'll be. Looks like bridge-blocking badasses are the best kind.

Honorable mention to then Captain Robert Pardo.

http://www.historynet.com/pardos-push-an-incredible-feat-of-airmanship.htm

The guy was almost courtmartialed for these heroics by the way. Another bad-ass by the name of Robin Olds helped him.
