I'm going to throw this games hat in the ring, cause I don't think it'll be mentioned for a good while. Valkyria Chronicles to me was a beautiful looking and beautiful sounding game. The opening cinematic, just as you get past the first loading screen is a brilliant piece on it's own. The way the picture gets sketched out and filled in like a water color painting, then watching it come to life simply takes my breath away. The music that accompanies it is simply stunning and really sets the mood for what will be a remarkable piece of work. Very few games have gotten my attention with it's visuals and music like that. I went to great lengths just to find a copy of the soundtrack for this game it was that good. I was quite literally playing (what I considered) a work of gaming art.

Otogi: Myth of Demons, it's a work of art come to life screaming authentic Japanese themes and artistic beauty.

Also Bioshock for its nice thirties theme and atmosphere and Mass Effect for its stylish Sci Fi aesthetic.

Also it's remiss of me not to also mention Halo 3 because the lighting and colors really are to die for in that game.

p.s 3500th post... hooray for me!!

Well name the game that you think is the most beautiful of them all.
For me it is the Mirror's Edge (PC). I have heard that the ps3 version is not that great, but the PC version really is beautiful. The visuals are one of the main reasons ( the other is the feeling of motion if u pull of nice move)I keep on going despite the fact that the game play sucks a bit and the controls are better suited for a consol and that the story is well bad.

If we're talking sheer graphics, it's hard to argue against the Crysis series...

Other options would be Mirror's Edge, Assassin's Creed (2 hasn't came out for PC yet, so I haven't played it), Fallout 3 and L4D2.

I thought MGS4 was great on the eyes, but didn't have a whole lot that was unique in terms of visual style. If I had to go with artistic design, Prince of Persia 08.

The most beautiful in terms of visual or art style?

If it's just visuals, then Crysis and Crysis Warhead win. With certain mods, the game can approach near photographic realism.

In terms of art style, Borderlands has a pretty unique art style that i thought worked perfectly with the game. Super Robot Wars Z( and the whole series) has that nice slightly chibi mecha style with nice bright colors.
I loved the crap out of Borderland's graphics. They had an interesting tone, but once you get used to it, it immerses you seamlessly. I have trouble describing it, its as if the graphics are never bad. there are always there. They do the job thier suposed too. They never distract yet never look bad. To me that is quite an achievement.

While walking out of the cave into the beautiful sunlit world of Oblivion was certainly something to behold at the time,

i think I Wanna Be The Guy is going to take the cake.

Not beautiful graphically, but beautiful for its amazing ability to cause people to spontaneously combust.

If there is a non-visual beauty category in this contest, I nominate Planescape: Torment.

The levels in Banjo-Kazooie games have always looked great.

The original has Treasure Trove Cove, Clanker's Cavern, Freezeezy Peak and Mad Monster Mansion
The second game has Mayahem Temple, Witchyworld, Jolly Roger's Lagoon and Hailfire Peaks.
The third game.. I haven't unlocked all levels yet, but so far they've all looked great.(could be nostalgia since all levels use music from the older games mixed in with the new music, and.. well Banjoland [http://i46.tinypic.com/2it4l69.jpg])
I've never played the handheld game(s?).

Isn't there a wrong and right answer to this question?

That is, Crysis and not-Crysis?

Runners up would be Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2.

As for art direction, I would say... probably Flower.

Planescape: Torment owns practically everything it's in. Escpecially Top Ten lists.

The scene that still sticks most in my mind is in The Wheel of Time. It's on the first generation Unreal engine, but there's a scene where you climb up a hillside, and see a castle in the distance with lighting flashing. Extremely primitive by today's standards, but it was beautiful at the time. Currently I would have to say STALKER is the most beautiful game I've seen though. It's so disturbingly realistic and accurate, from the flaking paint on the ferris wheel, to the papers thrown on the floor, to the radioactive red forest, the overgrown streets of Pripyat with decaying cement and mortar buildings on either side. Beautiful in a god forsaken way.

most BEAUTIFUL?

idk. from the ones i've played little big planet is cute... but as a guy just stating that takes one of your testicles away, so i'll refrain from stating it again.

BUT, i thought ffxII takes the cake from the ones i've played.

As for the general answer, i'd say that Muramasa: the demon blade for wii.
