Flower was beautiful both from a visual standpoint and from a thematic one. It's actually quite heartbreaking when you stop to think about it, and what's going on.

I'm going to have to say Eternal Sonata.

But then again I also find Silent Hill 2's nightmare worlds beautiful.

Ico, also agree with poster who said Lost Odyssey, Jade Empire was a very beautiful game in places, I am assuming that we aren't just talking about tech quality!

I'll tow the Shadows of the Colossus line, sure.
Agreed.

Bioshock, the entire game looked like some gorgeous, shimmering work of art. Not to mention, you know, it's fucking awesome.
Seconded.
Maybe it's just that I like Steampunk/Art Deco.
Thirded

I also reckon Alan Wake will be nice too.

Isn't there a wrong and right answer to this question?

That is, Crysis and not-Crysis?

Runners up would be Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2.

As for art direction, I would say... probably Flower.
I'm probably going to get *****-slapped for this one, but the concepts presented in 'Lost Odysee' blew my mind. I play that game time and again just to see the artistic design.

I'm going to throw this games hat in the ring, cause I don't think it'll be mentioned for a good while. Valkyria Chronicles to me was a beautiful looking and beautiful sounding game. The opening cinematic, just as you get past the first loading screen is a brilliant piece on it's own. The way the picture gets sketched out and filled in like a water color painting, then watching it come to life simply takes my breath away. The music that accompanies it is simply stunning and really sets the mood for what will be a remarkable piece of work. Very few games have gotten my attention with it's visuals and music like that. I went to great lengths just to find a copy of the soundtrack for this game it was that good. I was quite literally playing (what I considered) a work of gaming art.
Let's hear it for a very under rated game. Well said MarreckSteel.

I also agree on the Shadows of the Colossus pitch, but we shouldn't forget it's predecessor (where's the spell check?) ICO. The grahpics were simple but effective, the sound was amazing and if you want immersion, then I don't think you have to look that much further. Not bad for a PS2 game that hardly bothered the charts.

Im going with Okami on this one people.
Surprised this wasn't mentioned earlier.

I'm going to have to go with a couple; Shadow of the Colossus, which was absolutely gorgeous and mixed a beautiful world with an intangible atmosphere of tragedy so well that it more than made the entire game experience, and Final Fantasy VIII, which while nowehere near graphically beautiful per se, was a really good game world, still my favourite of all time. Every place you visited had it's own character, from the quietly oppressed Timber to the tranquility of Balamb, and every time I arrived somewhere it was instantly memorable.

Prince of Persia '08, though it was a pretty bad game the beautiful landscape and characters made playing it tolerable.

Beautiful Game? Well, in terms of beauty and detail to the world maybe something in the Assasin Creed area?

For overall Aesthetic, has to be Shadow of the Collussus. It may not be the most graphically intensive game, but, its stark nature and the way it shows beauty and different landscapes. Its just so awe inspiring to me.

I liked the newest Prince of Persia. Felt like I was in an awesome watercolor painting.
I entered this thread thinking the exact same thing!

It was just such a good idea for a game, put the player in a colourful and beautiful environment, then strip it to dark and mysterious colours. Then have the player get back all the colour and beauty.

I must play through it fully sometime...

Flower if you're going for art direction. And it's cheap, so it really is worth trying out.

They best graphics I have seen might have been Uncharted 2.

Am I the only one who really appreciates the level of intricate detail going into the maps
of Team Fortress? Hydro is one of the best looking things I have ever seen. It's just annoying all the cool stuff is blocked off.

I shat bricks when I saw DN3D's graphics.

In 2004.

(well, I was looking at DOS games at the time, got sensitised to DooM's graphics, played Duke Nukem and was surprised at... well, how much better it was)

a bit subjective, so I'll go with art style;

PS3 / PS2
Valkyria Chronicles
Heavenly Sword
Ratchet and Clank Future
Okami
SOTC

PC
Dreamfall
Red Alert 3 (I know, but I liked it)
Demigod
TF2

XBOX 360
Infinite Undiscovery
Forza 3
Fable II (you can deny its pretty unique)

Definitely a big fan of Okami's style and Flower's direction, but been playing a lot of Borderlands lately so I'll toss it in there as well. Overall best graphics, I would have to say Uncharted 2 as well.
