The Horadric Cube. Watching your stash go from full to empty with the addition of a single item is beautiful.

I really love the Nagrand area of World of Warcraft. The first time I saw it I was amazed. For me, its kinda like Green Hill Zone of Sonic the Hedgehog, but in full 3d, and full of just as much epic win.

Flying around Hogwarts on Buckbeak's back during the winter in the Prisoner of Azakaban game. I did it for hours; the music, graphics and general feel were simply amazing.

we all did.we all did.

One of my favorite scenes is the "Don't Give 'em an Inch" scene in Call of Duty 2. it's the part near the end of the russian campaign where, after a moving speech, the russians charged towards the Nazi building, strapping explosives to the lower beams of the facility. seeing the Swastikas burning as the building went down was very moving.

and it's probably been said to death, but most of Shadow of the Colossus. I particularly liked fighting the bird Colossi above the lake.

When I saw the title of this thread, 2 games immediately sprang to mind, both for the constant amazement at each new area, and how I would fight with myself between rushing to get to the new areas, and taking my sweet time to take in the sights.
The first game has been mentioned maybe more than any in this thread - Shadow Of The Colossus. Almost everything about it has already been said, though I'd like to add the area with all the broken arches and pillars - jumping all over them before I was supposed to be there was crazy fun.
But the other game ...
I haven't seen it mentioned here once.
NOT ONCE!!!
Come on ...

How about a little game called Psychonauts?!?!
Oh, how the camp grounds were fun to explore, the psychic bears fun to elude. And each new level, a new psyche to explore - jumping into people's minds knowing only 1 thing for sure: whatever you were about to see was going to be NOTHING like what you'd seen to that point, and it was probably going to just flat out blow your mind.

Oh, and the Splinter Cell series has always had some sweet ass set pieces (zip lining into a building on fire, scaling down huge office building while fireworks go off, etc)

Anytime blood, gore, and death are done right.
For example:
-Beating a hobo to death with a pipe in Condemned
-Anytime Alma's freaks slays one of you dimwitted teammates in FEAR:XP
-The mass-death scene at the amphitheater in Parasite Eve (PS1 graphics, but it was still grossly magnificent).
-Teh quintessential headshot from just about every war game in existence.
-Killing Leon by shooting into the water at the little dock. Or just killing that blond metrosexual prick anywhere.
And so on.

Diving into peoples' minds and reeking havoc in Psychonauts.

*puts fanboiz cap on* The backgrounds for the cities in the .hack games. Even the GU ones had decent backgrounds, but seeing the City of Night for the first time in Outbreak (or was it Mutation? I forget now x-x need to play them, since I have all four of the original games >.>) just takes some getting used to, especially since you gate in to a broken and empty city. The original series finished before WoW even existed, and the graphics, although kinda poop even by the standards back then, weren't meant to compete with anyone as the story carried it all so well, so meh.

Finally, of course, that scene in System Shock 2:
"The Polito form is dead, insect. Are you afraid? What is it you fear? The end of your trivial existence? When the history of my glory is written, your species shall only be a footnote to my magnificence. I am SHODAN."

or the entire sequence where you ride the citadel transport system to the top of the tower
THIS.

That was a moment of pure storytelling genius, the sound and visuals working together to make an astonishing piece of interactive art. utterly sublime. I will never forget just sitting there with my jaw scraping the floor during that whole sequence...

The exterior view of the Locust Queen's Palace as you descend towards it had myself and the missus gawping at the hi def ultra realism (to quote Trent Reznor)

The large set pieces in Dead Space were stunning... the giant meteor that you jump onto and out into space... the open area where you take on the hive mind in the giant crater... the final part of the runway where you drag the marker to its destination... the zero gravity tunnel near the end... all awesome.

The train station after Ravenholm in Half-Life 2. Oh, evil murderous cyborgs, how I missed thee.
Thats the first time you come accross an evil murderous cyborg sniper isn't it?, I remember it well, seeing the laser sight train itself on zombies and fucking them up, with me running up to say "hello" to my friend helping me out, he greeted me by shotting me to death. I was shouting, "but i'm not a zombie!"

I reloaded the game and got killed again, thats when I realised he was foe, not friend.

My biggest two are, watching Raam fall to the ground when you're on insane mode.
And oblivion, just staring out at the landscape.

Looking around my room i spotted one more. Wind waker, just being out on the ocean.

That cutscene of everyone flying into Subspace in Super Smash Bros: Brawl was awesome. The nostalgia factor was pretty high with that one, though. I used to play Melee weekly with a big group of friends when I was little.

The first time you fight a Big Daddy in Bioshock
The first time you get to play with the gravity gun in Half-life 2
The first time you see Alyx Vance in Half-life 2
The first time you actually get a zergling rush to work on Starcraft
Every cinematic the Blizzard guys have ever made. At the time they were made, those things were absolutely breathtaking.
The just amazing amount of beautiful vistas in Oblivion.
Chainsawing your first Locust in Gears of War
And defiantly that last giant cut scene in Mass Effect between the Citadel forces, Sovereign and the Geth
Agree with Bioshock, Half Life and Oblivion (never played Starcraft). That ending was EPIC.
Rushing a guard outpost with a jeep that has a turret on Far Cry 2 and killing all the guards. Knowing I did that sends a chill down my spine...

The most beautiful thing in a video game is the string of swear words someone directs at you after you dominate them in TF2. The close runner up is the "so-and-so has left the game" ragequit that follows, and it takes second place because after that there are no more hilarious insults directed at your general person.

Oh, and on a more serious note, the ending cutscene from Thief 3.
