You just killed my fave childhood show... It truly is rather depressing.

Amazing. I've already seen almost all of these. Blame it on having been a sad sad kid, but I have a thing for depressing cartoons.

That "too disturbing, banned from kids' TV" bit everyone keeps showing is actually a clip from an entire movie, "The Adventures of Mark Twain."

Finally, here's my contribution, since we seem to be counting CGI works:

I dunno if theres many anime watchers on these boards but theres this one called Welcome to the NHK. It deals with stuff like social withdrawls, people with suicidal tendancies and that sort of thing. So yeah I'd say that's the most depressing cartoon I've ever seen, thats not to say it's not good, it's pretty ace actually but yeah its kinda harrowing.

Transformers Animated.

Why was it sad? The animation was terrible, the characters were all fairly un-interesting, the plot took fucking forever to actually do something, and the fucking fugly ass toys clogged the shelves and kept my beloved Classics line pretty much to internet only orders if I wanted them.

Fuck that show. You think Michael Bay ruined Transformers(you band wagoner you)? Go watch this abomination.

Not sad but still depressing in it's own way.

5 Centimeters Per Second, watch the whole thing start to finish and you never leave feeling positive.
I literally just spent an hour or two watching that movie, I just finished it... and I have to say, I am not disappointed. That is really sorta depressing, although I feel kinda happy for some odd reason.

Samurai Jack. Poor guy tries to get back home and save the world, but he always ends up either beaten to it by Aku or he throws it away. And there were some episodes that were meant to be depressive. Still my fav cartoon though.

Just watched Grave of the Fireflies, just to see if it was as sad as everybody keeps saying.

It is.

Had a good cry. Then I found my sister and hugged her.

I always got kinda sad in the middle of the Brave Little Toaster, when they're all in the trash heap.

Higurashi No naku Koro Ni, since anime seems to count. Don't let the first couple of episodes turn you away. People die. A lot.

Depressing, no? This is actually the main piece of music of the series.

By far the most depressing, yet funny cartoons I have ever watched was Monkey Dust on BBC 3.

The sketches in that show were as disturbing as they were hilarious.
Was that the one with the "HE IS A PAEDO DOG!" or "WHAT IS THIS PLACE OF THE MINSTER OF KIDDIES!"..."err...thats kiddiminster?"

OT: WATERSHIP DOWN[/B]
Oh my God...that is so sad...but kinda happy too, i guess. My heart hurts...

Animals of Farthing Wood - Fantastic cartoon, but wouldn't get aired now for love nor money. Too sad for the little kiddys because heaven forfend they realise cute little animals die.

Grave of the Fireflies - I can't remember where I first heard about it, but I bought it knowing it was going to be a downer, but I honestly didn't expect it to be that much of a downer. I want to recommend it and lend it to my friends, but I'm not that cruel.

Full Metal Alchemist - The only time one of my friends has admitted to welling up is when watching this. Not going to say more, but if you've watched it, you know the places and if you haven't, watch it now.

The Snowman - I don't know why, but I always found this depressing.

When the Wind Blows - Watch this and you'll want to top yourself. Originally a comic, its about an old couple in the lead up to, and the aftermath of a nuclear strike on London. Its probably the only film I have thats too sad for me to watch all the way through.

if anime counts then elfen lied if not then yeah kiwi
meh.. I think Elfen Lied was too overdone to be truly sad, especialy those horribly executed ecchi-scenes kinda ruined it. Lucy's flashbacks were pretty good though

Continuing on possible anime, I would say Wolfgang Grimmer's deathscene in Monster.

You kidding? Ed is the happiest person alive. Mind you, he rarely knows where he is, but he's super happy. People seem to like Double D well enough. When he's acting on his own, people seem to get along with him. It's Eddy that's really the tragic element to that show. Here is this kid with a uber popular brother that everyone loved, and there is Eddy, the guy that no one likes. But Eddy kind of grew out of that approval seeking attention grabbers, and grew into conning people. I don't think he's a terribly unhappy kid though.

On that note, I just could be reading WAY too much into this.

Honeybee Hutch. An old cartoon about a honey bee that has lost his mother, the queen, after a a wasp (I think it was wasps) attack.
He searches for her the entire series, while being cheated on, abused, laughed at by other insects the entire way.

Several times he finds his mother, but gets separated again. The worst one being the time he was trying to survive by joining an evil gang and stealing form others. He stole from his mother, not knowing he was doing it. His mother let him, because she knew it was him.
Then there was the time he was temporarily blinded and someone lied to him, saying she was his mother. To make him feel better... until he regained his vision and found out it was a lie.

Just thinking about Nina, and the whole bit about their mother makes me feel all weak. Not to mention Hughes

Now and Then, Here and There.
Bleaker than Rochdale on a rainy day in February.
