That... Really ruined my evening... *cries*

That was probably the most depressing thing that I've ever watched.

--Xvito, keeping it... Sad.
Actually the kiwi didn't die. You could hear the sound of a parachute opening at the end.
I thought that sound was the Kiwi smashing against the ground.
I guess i cant hear. It was the Kiwi meeting the ground.
Wishful thinking. An explaination could be that you couldn't hear it because you were so moved by the cartoon and wanted the kiwi to survive that your mind subconciously suppressed the sound and provided you with a happier alternative...

I think the little shorts from Cyanide and Happiness are pretty sad. If you can count comc strips, well C+H have done two depressing comic strip weeks, where they make you laugh at things you shouldn't.

I dunno, I think Kiwi lived exactly how s/he wanted to...up until impact, of course. It's kinda beautiful, if you ask me.

As for sad cartoons...I recall Iron Giant having some tear-jerking moments, in that the gov't would rather destroy the Giant than try to understand it; which is how most movie "monsters" get treated.

X-Men. These days, the X-Men have developed kind of a reputation for being the sad sack manic depressives of the comic book/cartoon world, but back in the 90's, when I was just a kid who liked to watch people hit stuff, I had no reason to expect the stuff they'd touch on in that show.

Seriously, man. By the time the second episode is over, one team member has been captured, another has been killed, the rest of the team is fracturing over leadership issues and Jubilee, the character set up to be the "spunky protagonist", has learned that her foster parents think of her as a burden, and in turn had given her information over to the sinister Mutant Control Agency.

That's some heavy stuff to dump on a ten year old.

I think Kiwi might win this. But I going to submit School Days (more disturbing than sad, but still) and Watership Down. I'm going to also say the eighth episode of Gurren Lagann.

Since some of the cartoons that came to mind were already mentioned here, I'll list the one that popped in my head now: Chrno Crusade.

Silver Fang was pretty sad all the way. A lot of memorable characters die heroically in the series, although the one that has the biggest impact was
as soon as Riki regains his memories of his son Silver and have a brief tearful reunion with Gohei, the bear stands up and attacks, fatally wounding Riki who jumped in to protect them in the process.

Futurama, more preciesly, Jurassic Bark episode.

I assume you watched it, if not, you probably regret it... Anyway, in that episode, Fry (protagonist) finds a fossile of his dog from the year 2000. He tries to bring him back to life, meanwhile, we get to see a lot of scenes from their life - where they met, how did they spend time and play.

Then, Fry realises that his dog was fossiled at the age of 15 - so basically, he died 12 years after Fry was frozen. He knows that this dog wouldn't be happy, that he had a new life, new owners and has learned a lot new trick already...

But the truth was a lot sadder, and that makes me cry - the dog waited for Fry to come back, every single day, rain or snow, not moving from the place Fry worked at. God, why did I remind myself of how sad that was...
I agree. That episode had me tearing up too. But there is a bright side! In the first Futurama movie (Benders Big Score, I think), when Fry escapes to the past to evade killer Bender, and live out his life, he and the dog reunite. :D It made me happy to see them together again. So while the dog died in the same spot as Fry remembered him waiting at, they still lived a long life together. :)

Back in my high school japanese 1 class, we had a movie night. Someone brought Grave of the Fireflies. Every one of us were sobbing at the end.

Then Elfin Lied... plain depressing.

Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising made this one just as Hitler invaded Poland touching off World War II. By far the saddest, most depressing thing I've ever seen animated.

That Kiwi thing was motivational!

OT: King of the Hill, I don't know why.

It just depresses me.
