Final Fantasy 9.

I loved FF8, so FF9 was a huge letdown for me.

Now granted, I haven't played much of FF13, but considering that FF12 is one of my favorite games of all time, I'm sure FF13 will wind up being a huge disappointment.

Supreme Commander 2

I loved Total Annihilation, and when the first Supreme Commander came along I was worried that it would ruin this heritage it claimed to be a "spiritual successor" to. Fortunately it was a polished jewel, with so much cleverness built into the new interface that I had a big idiot grin for the first few hours of playing it.

Naturally with Supreme Commander 2 I was worried it wouldn't live up to this, and I was especially worried about it being dumbed down for consoles. Then I read some interviews with the developers that assuaged all my fears, and even made me interested in the game (In fact I read them here - the first time I've ever been annoyed with the Escapist).

So, when I bought it I was prepared for a disappointment, but I was cautiously hopeful for some new cleverness. I was sad to see that there was nothing remotely new or clever about it. Then I was outraged to find that they'd completely gutted the game.

Every interesting mechanic that distinguished TA and its successors from other RTS games was gone, and replaced with the most generic equivalent. Anything clever that the first Supreme Commander had introduced was stripped straight out. The three factions remained in name only, without any distinction in style or tactics between them.

Worst of all, these changes didn't even make the game more fun to play. I was sad.

(I'd also write a similar rant about Deus Ex: Invisible War, but I'm sure someone else would enjoy expressing their rage about that)

My usual reply in these threads:

Freelancer. I loved Starlancer with a passion, best space combat sim since the days of Wing Commander, and then they had to go and fuck it all up with shitty ship design, horrible flight controls, stupid-ass storyline that burned it's predecessor's brilliance to cinders, then pissed on the smoldering corpse, and worst of all, being BORING AS ALL HELL!

Fuck you, Freelancer. Fuck you to Hell and back.

I'd have to say Final Fantasy XIII. Was so looking forward to a great game but it only came out as a decent one in my opinion.

Nights Journey of Dreams: I waited anxiously for 2 years only to be utterly disappointed. It wasn't horrible, but...I died a little inside and was soul crushed.

Final Fantasy 12: I remember skipping school so I could go to the mid-night release and happily play it into the morning. Then I realized how much I didn't like it. (I probably need to give it a second chance though)

I'm going to second Max Payne. My ex said it was the only shooter she's ever enjoyed, so I thought, 'Wow if it's up to her standards, it must be the snizzleshit.' Overused gimmick does not alleviate boring gunfights.

FEAR and Halo too. Just not enough going on, but if there weren't so many people mouth-humping those two, I would have said 'That was a cool little diversion.' Kind of like Singularity.

Bioshock 2. Way to take a great franchise and punt it screaming into the abyss.

And I'm really hoping Deus Ex 3 doesn't end up on a thread like this someday.

Fallout 3.
I've raved enough about it in recent memory.
Lets just say that it was the most overhyped piece of shit I ever played, and certainly not worthy of Game of the Year title it proudly wears.

I lol at people who don't appriciate the brilliance that was the Half-life series. For some reason good pacing and narative are lost on these ppl who much rather the terrible blandness and convoluted story that is any war game like CoD.

Oh well, to each his own. I'm sure the protagonists in the new cod will die a record 9 times.
And here... ladies and gentlemen... we have a fine specimen of the species Halflifeius Fanius... a subgenus of the Elitiust PCgamerus. These... fascinating creatures are found all over the Internet... but are most common in the Escapist Forums, an area which contains many subgenuses... of the Elitiust PCgamerus genus. It is... a remarkably sociable creature, and you will typically find them in groups... often, conversing with others of its parent genus, including TF2ius Fanaticus and Portalius Fanboyus. These creatures are omnivorous, but their favoured prey seems to be individuals from the ModernFPS Gamerius, such as the Haloius Fanius and CoDus Playerius. /Attenborough

(Please excuse the horrifically terribly awful science.)

Anyway, OT: Half-Life 2 was a bit disappointing to me. It certainly wasn't bad - indeed, I look forward to the day the quality of gaming has advanced to the sheer level of complete awesome where we can look upon Half-Life 2 and declare it "bad", rather than "high end of average" as it is now. But neither was it the righteous, holy and divine game of God its fans hype it up as.

If there's one thing I really disliked about it (aside from the absolutely horrific airboat section) it's... the fans. God, I hate the most vocal portions of the fanbase of Half-Life so much.

Black Site was very disappointing, I was hoping for it to be as good as Area 51 but unfortunately the devs were really bloody lazy.

Most Recently: Enslaved (Disappointing in that the demo gave me much too high of an expectation)

That I Remember: Mirror's Edge (Parkour isn't parkour when you're thrown into a room with assault rifle wielding baddies with no exit in sight)

Please note that fail-biology lessens the impact of one's joke. A species cannot be a subgenus, also you don't capitalize the species name, just the genus... You inability to grasp taxonomy aside, I fail to see how I'm being a fanboy. I'm sorry if defending a genre-defining game offends you but if it wasn't for HL then we'd probably still all be playing iterations of Quake Arena. But such is the way when people arrive on the scene a decade late, compared to what there was, HL was fan-fucking-tastic, which, yes by todays standards, might be considered not very good.

Don't worry though, "Prepubis ignoramis" will come and shit on your favourite games when you're older, simply because they missed it when it was relevant.
