This might cop a bit of hate but I thought Mass Effect was sooo disappointing, considering how good everyone made it out to be.
You and me both.

Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, I can't explain how hyped I was for it and I can't explain how disappointed I was.

All of the Half Life games.

Everyone raved about them and so I played them, and I guess they were just too hyped up. They weren't bad, they were just very average. The story was ok, but I find the idea of a mute protagonist stupid beyond belief and it felt really clinical in the gameplay and such. Like pretty much every Valve game, it just never drew me in (exception being Portal), and it was quite unsatisfying. Pacing is nice, but the game wasn't fun.

So now I get scoffed at by PC elitist twatty types when I say I think MW2 is better than Half Life 2.

Oh, and whatever the crappy game after Need For Speed Underground 2 was called. I loved NFSU2, but the next one felt so half-assed after it.

Half-Life. Maybe it was the hype but all i see when i play it is a mediocre FPS with any amazing moments being washed away by repetitive gameplay
... When did you play it? Because you may just see it that way nowadays due to the whole, it basically being one of the main starting-points for the FPS genre?

OT: Fallout 3.

Bioshock. My old roommates raved about it, but when I played it I was severely underwhelmed. Some atmospheric moments (first time seeing a Big Daddy had me actually whispering "fuck off, fuck off, fuck off" to my TV screen, but in general it didn't live up to my expectations.

I think the most disappointing game for me is one that had a really engaging story but I could not bring myself to keep playing it. The game I am referring to is Dragon Age. I got about 50 hours into the game and found myself giving up due to the astoundingly bad production value. I really wanted to keep playing but I couldn't put up with it anymore and went onto games where the developers cared.

Edit: Oooooh I forgot. Fable 2 was an outrageous disappointment. I didn't follow the hype, in fact I wasn't even aware of the hype. All I knew was that I had a lot of fun playing Fable 1. I can never quite articulate my issues with Fable 2, other than to say the magic is completely gone. Everything good about Fable 1 was completely gone and it felt like a totally different game. I'm not even going to bother with Fable 3.

I'm just gona say it, HALO 2, after how great the first one was I got a mediocre stepping stone for a third game, that still isn't better than the first one.

Maybe I'm too easy going but a lot of the games mentioned I found perfectly entertaining for what they were. I got burned by Fable 2's ending leaving me very disappointed. Since then I try to research games before I buy, and take fan hype with a big grain of salt.

I have noticed a lot of widely loved games popping up here. Some of them like Bioshock and Portal I love. While others like Mass Effect and Fallout I don't consider special. Its probably due to the fact that I played Bioshock and Portal without them ever being recommended to me while with Mass Effect and Fallout I went in to them with massive expectations... Besides that though....... fucking Spore '_'

Gothic 3. The first two games were absolutely amazing. While The Elder's Scrolls was struggling with AI in Oblivion and bare bones scripting in Morrowind, Gothic 1 and 2 had world's so deep and believable that it still surprises me how far intelligent scripting can go. Not to mention that despite the clunky interface, the games were fun to play and the stories were good. Then out of nowhere they set their sights too high in an attempt to market the third game to a western audience and it resulted in a boring, buggy, and broken game. Hype machine destroyed.
Agreed, try Gothic 4 yet? yeah...It's worse. I still enjoyed Gothic 3 though. Just not as much as 1 and 2.

Oblivion for me. Compared to Morrowind it's a peace of shit.

God Of War 2 disappointed me a lot. I had heard it was an amazingly awesome game but i played it and i didn't love it. The story and gameplay reminded me of a really bloody, even-worse-than-they-usually-are soap opera. It was good. Not great.
Also The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Oblivion just didn't do it for me. It was lame. Like Runescape with better graphics. The story was lacking a lot too.

Please don't take this the wrong way, as I mean no offense, but that is a really ironic statement coming from someone with a Mass Effect avatar...

Arcania came out? Eh, I was going to skip it anyway. I was incredibly surprised by Risen though, which is exactly what I was looking for in Gothic 3.

I was ready to defend one of my favorite games ever when i realized that you are totally right. But while ME is very much like a soap opera, the way i meant "The story and gameplay reminded me of a really bloody, even-worse-than-they-usually-are soap opera" is that the whole time Kratos is like " I want to kill you Zeus!" but then in the end Zeus is all " Thats cause your my son! Haha!". Just a lame twist. Plus what was the point of incorperating the whole thing about Krato killing his wife and child? There was none. Another lame "plot point". Thats all i was trying to say and it was my fault for not explaining.

Yeah haven't played it. I can link you a review of it if you want. It's disgrace to Gothic though. The review rips the game to shreds.

I want to get Risen, it's so hard to find though, and I can't buy it online.

Yeah, we got it close to release, so it was well stocked. If you're not in Germany, it's pretty tough to find now...

I'd love to see that review.
