MAG. Great gameplay, it's not trying to be Call of Duty, handles up to 256 very well without lag and it's only two flaws are intentional. The low graphic quality is to cut down on lag and the fact that you can't change sides (without DLC) is because the whole game is supposed to simulate an actual war.

Warlords Battlecry II [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warlords_Battlecry_II]

The single greatest RTS in the history of history, and yet I know of only 2 people besides me who had played it. I strongly urge anyone who loves RTS's to give it a shot. 12 unique races, with different unit/building sets for each, and a role-playing element for the characters' Hero. Brilliant, brilliant game.
Or better yet Warlords Battlecry III, it's pretty much the same thing with more polish.

One of the best freeware puzzle games, no one has heard of. It also has a translation patch.

Earth defense force 2017, the video game equivalent of the "so bad it's good" B movie.
The only reason it's underrated is because it's impossible to find, and therefore not many people have heard of it.
E.D.F! E.D.F!

My vote goes for this one.

Also for tower defense games Ghost Hacker (on Krongregate) was great, as was Lock's Quest on Nintendo DS. I also have to add King's Story on Wii to that list (though it's more like Pikmin). Instant friend to anyone who has played these three games. Anyone?... anyone? [tumble weeds and crickets]... Anyone?

SiN: Episodes. It's a game running on the source engine, has similar gameplay to the Half Life games, the story is sufficient to keep the game together, but is unimportant. Its a good run-around-shooting-things kind of game, and I picked it up in a bargain bin.

MAG was fun, I agree. I think my main problem with it though was the very limited amount of maps.

Star Wars: Jedi Outcast. Waaaay better than Teh Force Unleashed.

Also Iji.. A great underrated platformer. Plus it's free to boot!
Jedi Outcast is amazing and at times hard as hell. I'm going with that.

Shadow Hearts 3. I just really expected more people to be asking for damn sequel already. And .hack series. I mean it comes with an anime movie with every copy! How awesome is that!?

Unreal Tournament 1999. It's so awesome and no one is talking about it... well it is 12 years old now, but it's still great

Not that its particularly underrated, but Shenmue received no where near as much praise as it deserved for achieving what it had done so.

A more recent example would be Deadly Premonition - an absolute rough gem but one of the most memorable games for all those who've played it. Doesn't help that review amateurs like IGN have damned it via harsh reviews.

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction - It wasn't just all about explosions, it had a really nice storyline (which is basically a more realistic version of Homefront) and I found the political satire to be very well done, it had great voice acting, was well written and had a lot of good content such as weapons and vehicles.
Damn straight. Such a shame even the makers didn't seem to realise this when they made the sequel, which really WAS only about the explosions. They made up for it with The Saboteur though...

Timesplitters... all of them.

That franchise should be the #1 shooter.
Indeed.

any James Bond game other than Goldeneye. Seems like Goldeneye gets all the love, and while on some counts it does deserve it, the other games were good too and they've all seemingly been dismissed as hopeless cash-ins. Nightfire, Everything or Nothing, and Goldeneye: Rogue Agent are my personal faves out of the whole series.
T.W.I.N.E. was OK, but the rest, save maybe for Everything Or Nothing, really were hopeless cash ins. Especially Rogue Agent. Nightfire had great visuals and animation, but the story was abysmal and was like a 6 year old's interpretation of what makes a Bond game. EoN at least tried to do a new spin on things.

Hey at least it gets more talk than that bore-fest UT2003.

There was a little gem for the Dreamcast called Red Dog, i got it on a whim from a bargain bin. I thought it was going to be pretty crappy. The game actually ended up being pretty fun and challenging.

Playstation One - Tobal No. 1 - Ended up spawning one of the finest finest fighting games ever created with Tobal 2

Playstation 2 - Fatal Frame / Project Zero Series - Pure great horror, and really captures a japanese folklore feel

Xbox - Otogi Series - as others have said very atmospheric, and excellent gameplay on both titles, pretty challenging as well.

PRAISE THE LORD! Someone else on here who's played the series!

But I'm gonna have to disagree. I found the art style in the second one to be better, and they really screwed up the Hero leveling system in the third. Not to mention that the 3 new races were pretty average.
I get so much replay value out of the second one. So so much.

However, I still enjoyed the third, just not in the same league as the second one for me.
