Thats why it won it, the film is god awful. Anything crap is good with things like that. Look at fashion the people look ridiculous but the clothes are worth thousands, hair styles and art are other examples of crap looking things being highly praised.
The reason it won is because the Academy (or whatever they're actually called) are suckers for stories of 'Personal triumph' to make all the morons who buy the tickets feel marginally better at the end.
I wait for a movie I like to come out, and although it doesn't bother me too much, it annoys me slightly that it will always lose out to an 'inspirational' film with Meryl Streep playing a blind lesbian single mother struggling to overcome her problems in a mens world.
I am not 100% sure about this but wasn't the previous winner that movie about queen Elizabeth? I don't think that was about personal triumph.

For those who thinks Prince of Persia will be good, just remember... ITS DISNEY!!! It doesn't matter how much money you put in it. Painting a turd gold is still a turd, but in this case it's more like taking a good game series and hitting it with the stupid hammer. Over and over again.
Disney recent live action action movies: Pirates of the Caribbean. All awesome. If it follows after them it will be great.

Sorry for the double post but...

Prince of Persia: The Movie

Christ... This is just horrifying.
Now hold on, at least wait for the movie to come out before bitching about how bad it is. From looking at how Disney films usually fare, and that Disney is investing a big old chunk of change into it; I'd say it might be watchable.
...Jake Gylenhaal is the Prince. Of Persia. That's what I find horrifying.

You know, 2009 was a pretty good year for movies.

We got Watchmen, anyway.
That film was pretty good, but also pretty silly given what they turned the plot into.
Well yeah, but the spot-on translation of the majority of the characters and the brilliant soundtrack were easily enough (I think) for this to be Best Film 2009.

It'd be like if somebody made an awesome movie translation of The Count of Monte Cristo, which I consider to be the best book ever written. And to this day, every movie adaptation I've seen has been crap. Except Gankutsuou, but that was only good for the first half of the series before it degenerated into tired anime cliches and blatant aping of Bram Stoker (the connection between the Count and Dracula was only ever hinted at in the novel, and obviously the Count was not actually a vampire).

Yeah, well, that's your opinion. When I say "beautifully filmed", I'm mostly referring to the cinematography. The shots of the landscapes in India were breathtaking, and I was just really emotionally moved by the story. Not to mention, it was extremely original. Out of curiosity, what do you think should have won?
It's my opinion? Really? I thought it was your opinion. Or someone else's opinion. Thanks for reminding me, for a second there, I thought I was the voice of god.

My favourite film of 2008 was probably Wall-E but best picture would go to Che Part 1. I'll win the lottery before a film like that wins an Oscar though. I suppose you really enjoyed The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas..?
I never saw the boy in the striped pyjamas, and the sarcasm at the beginning of your statement was painfully unnecessary, but if you want to come off as a dipshit, I suppose that's your decision. I wouldn't expect someone with such an acute lack of artistic taste to respond with anything intelligent, anyway.

Your first sentence doesn't make any sense. I think I have decyphered it though. You seem to think that it was not necessary for me to treat your 'that's your opinion' comment to harsh sarcasm. Apparently, stating the obvious is the preserve of those with an abundance of 'artistic taste'. Though it seems even such people are not above employing sarcasm - it makes me think about the word 'hypocrisy'.
Well, if you want to go down that road, you spelled "deciphered" wrong, and there wasn't anything sarcastic in my comment, I was quite frank in what I said.

Well Nolan ans Scorsese are both making new movies, so they'll probably be worth a look. The only problem is that almost everything else looks rubbish.

2008 can't have been much of a year if Slumdog Millionaire can win the Oscar for it...
I agree, that film was horrible!
Though I have to say that I can't generally support the use of Oscars as a way of gauging the quality of the films released that year - Rocky beat Taxi Driver, Dances With Wolves beat Goodfellas (and Ghost was nominated that year - enough to distrust the process entirely), Titanic beat The Full Monty, L.A. Confidential, and Good Will Hunting, Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan, and a Lord of the Rings film won one year... and that's all without even looking at films that were shockingly passed over for nomination like Requiem for a Dream, Eternal Sunshine, Memento, Billy Elliot, Big Lebowski, Trainspotting, Usual Suspects, Full Metal Jacket, Blade Runner and plenty of others that I can't remember. Stand by what I said about 2008 though.
Eternal Sunshine did win best original screenplay and LoTR deserved those Oscars. It was about time a fantasy movie was acknowledged at the oscars. And still, that same year Lost In Translation won an oscar for best original screenplay, eventhough the script itself was just Bill Murray And Scarlet Johanson running around Tokyo doing nothing.

I'm looking forward to Defendor, The Road, Worlds Greatest Dad and possibly Kick-ass though I have a nagging feeling it's going to be shit

Shutter Island has had me interested over the past few months already, so I'll be catching this one once it's released.

Alice in Wonderland should definitely be worth a look, too, assuming it doesn't make my brain implode.

Prince of Persia looks like a blast to me. The effects seem solid and the acting appears reminiscent of the 'Mummy' movies, which I enjoyed, hammy humour and all.

A-Team? I'm nerd-gasming at the mere thought of the new cast. Bring it on.

And Tron Legacy, well... to be honest I still haven't gotten around to watching the first one (I'm gonna get a lot of stick for this, I know). The movie looks interesting, though, if only for the design.

Oh, and what's up with the new Nightmare on Elm Street and Shrek movies...? Can't these series just be allowed to sit quietly in a corner and die? Both of them lost what made them good or even bearable a long time ago.

34 movies, and not one of them Invictus! Seriously, Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon and directed by Clint Eastwood! (I don't think it is out this year) I hope they don't murder the Clash of the Titans, that film is a classic.
