There's better words people can use.

I just kind of wish we'd all just find other words to use instead of just adopting one with such a checkered past because we're too lazy to find a better one.

For example, why do you have to say, "Come on n*****, stop doing that!" ?
Why can't you just say "Cut that out man!" ? or the timeless "Shut the fuck up."

Also, Black history month?? Never heard of it, is that an official thing?
I agree, but I can guarantee there are at least one hundred other words out there that could be substituted for this word, or it could just be removed entirely. I hear someone say that word, regardless of what the intent behind it is, I don't think highly of the person using it.

Just seems like a bit of a backwards step for us to run around yelling that word. Do we have to use it? No.

My question to those who do use it is why? Why do you use that word instead of something else or just dropping it completely?

****** is a terribly offensive word that should never be used in any circumstance when describing a person of African decent. Especially by white people.
Or its a word that has been so ridiculously blown out of proportion, it's hilarious some of the reactions people give when its used.
Like even this thread? You know why nobody says the word? Because you're all scared of the consequences. Yet i don't understand how saying 'the N-word' is any different than saying '******'. At least, there is no major difference when discussing the word. Actually using it to insult someone would have obvious differing effects, but for the sake of discussing a word why are we censoring it? Its like censoring 'fuck' with 'f*ck'. Its just stupid and only meant to appease your sense of...I dunno, whats the term here...."Wont somebody think of the children!?"

Oh, certainly, in conversation, it can be inappropriate, but if it is said in normal conversation it usually is used in humor or with malicious intent. What I meant was that in humor I think it shouldn't be taken seriously. Using such words for comedic value usually means the person saying it isn't funny.

Hey we called them it for 100+ years. I think that they can have it and use it all they want. I won't complain.

I'm not saying it because I don't think the mods agree with you, and I don't want to be on probation. but just for the hell of it, I'm going to edit my post.

"The N-Word"? Oh, you mean ******?

I don't understand shy people somehow think it's taboo. It's not offensive if not pointed at someone, it's a bit of a nonsense word anyways, and it's extremely politically incorrect (I don't have time for political correctness).

I don't understand why blacks call call each other "******" and have it all be good, but it's a terrible thing when a white does it. Also, they're allowed to call us "cracker". Double standards are wonderful.

Also, I'd like to point out that this video never caused any controversy that I'm aware of. Which is odd, considering the first four minutes.

Wow, he got pretty angry there. I would be stammering in fear if Morgan Freeman gave me that tone.

If directed towards somebody in a negative way, then it is absolutely unacceptable.

If the word is simply being discussed, such as in this thread or in a classroom that just read To Kill a Mockingbird, then it's fine. I honestly can't see any other positive or neutral use of the word "******", it's such a derogatory term that it really has no decent use. It's really just used for shock value these days, it seems like.

I think that the show The Boondocks has done the best to describe the meaning of the N word in this clip.
i love this episode.

OT: The word isn't really limited by race anymore, and is usually derogatory... it reminds me of the usage of words like '*****' and 'whore'. They are used either between friends in a joking manner or enemies as an insult. You don't go throwing those words around at strangers unless you are in a position in which a. you can fight back or b. they cant/wont fight. I don't use it and haven't had anyone refer to me by it (i think it's a masculine word... [sub]nigerrete sounds like a brand of nicotene gum ._.[/sub]), but I think of it like any other swear word.

Thank you for finally making a real thread.

OT: I never use it myself and I honestly don't care if other people use it. And anyway, it's just a word, and anyone who gets worked up about it is overreacting.

I don't like to use it, but I won't shy away if I'm forced to (reading a book out loud or something). Also [sub]some black people refuse to say it, or so I've been told[/sub]

I only ever say it in my car listening to rap with the windows rolled up... also if I think a black guy or girl could possibly read my lips while I'm enjoying said rap... I won't even lip sync it.

I really, really don't care. It's just a fucking word, and people need to get over it. Unless it's used to be a rude ************ that wants to display their racism on a rooftop then what the fuck ever, alright? I use the word to joke with my darker skinned friends.

Bottom line; it's just a word. Whatever.

I don't use it, I have no reason too. I wouldn't go up to someone and just call them a "******", just as much as I'd expect them not to come up to me and insult me.

The thing is not only do we have to take down black history month, we should also take down BET, and men and woman's magazine, and NAACP(I'm not even sure why this is still a group, black people can't get much farther then being president of the united states).
