I tried to play Fallout. I really gave it a good shot. But there was so much about the mechanics and the way the game had me portray myself and the complete lack of inventiveness on the main character's part really disenchanted me. I have put it down, maybe an hour in, and I do not feel bad about having done so.

Now, if they can keep the atmosphere of Fallout in the new game without making the interface and the options so belligerent, I will be all over that.

I'm the first to say I don't catch all of my writing errors, and I'm sure there are more than a few in my posts. However, I make a serious effort to edit my writing in hope of not looking like a complete idiot. However, I don't prescribe typing shortcuts, lack of capitalization, and missing punctuation in contractions. Doing those things make it harder to take your contributions and opinions seriously.

Worst case scenario: Morrowind in a post-apocalyptic setting. I can handle this.

I, once I have upgraded my computer, will certainly snag it.
True, but it'd be like renting T2 and finding LOTR in the box ^^

Ahhhhhhhh, Fallout fans, run!

Hah, in all seriousness. It's Beth, they never slack, and whatever you thought of Oblivion, a massive effort went into it. It will at least be good. Perhaps excellent. Perhaps not.

I hope for the former.

As a side note, am I the only person in this thread that liked Fallout Tactics? I also liked ff9. I thought it was the best of the series, guess I have odd tastes.....
I enjoyed Tactics, for what it was. People got angry because it wasn't Fallout 3, and didn't do all that well following Fallout canon, but it was a good game. In fact, it's what introduced me to the franchise.

I think part of the hate s due to the iterations the series has gone through
Generally Fallout 1 = good,
Fallout 2 = good
Fallout Tactics = not good,
Fall out brother hood of steel = grab the torches and pitch forks and rouse the villagers,

So the series that a lot of people love has been in a fairly steady decline, and most are afraid/angry that the new game will continue the slide.

Oh, whilst I'm here, can sombody please post here or link to somewhere where I can just read what the storyline for fallout 1 and 2 is so I can get a feel for it before 3 comes out? I just know I'm never going to be able to get past how dated the original games are to be able to play them through to the end so I'm not even going to try.

Sorry, but whilst I can identify with nostalgia since I was around in the days of the Amstrad CPC 464 and loved the games on that platform, technology has moved on, and for me at least playing the games I used to play only serves to tarnish the fond memories I have as I see just how limited and small they really were when inevitably compared to games of the modern era. And that's when playing ones I have fond memories of - when I try to play ones I never played, I just get turned off (System Shock 2 I'm looking at you you dated piece of I'm-sure-I'd-have-loved-it-back-then-but-now-just-think-it's-crap)

Actually I might make a separate thread on this topic...
There are many places you could go to hear the story... heck, I'll send you a PM summarizing it if you want.

Check out Wikipedia. Even though Fallout 3 will probably happen in a parallel Fallout theme universe.

Im off to make an omelette because I have enough egg on my face from what Ive just edited out. I was thinking of a completely different game than what I referred to.

I actually asked to be corrected if I had made mistakes. He wasn't pointing out my short comings as a writer out of maliciousness, he was doing it to be helpfull.
Oddly enough I rather liked Oblivions leveling up system. I thought it was generally very logical and well thought out.

"Based off of really sketchy info, I think Fallout 3 will rule!"
"Based off of really sketchy info, I think Fallout 3 will SUCK!"

Basically, what all fo3 arguments really come down to.

Alot of discussion in this thread, but I do feel it comes down to this, and it is possibly what everyone is thinking.

"Bethesda is not Black Isle"

I'm very sure the new Atari went thru this sort of flak until Neverwinter Nights prooved to be a success. Lets not mention Nwn2 however.

edit - typo

Games the developer has made in the past are not 'sketchy info'.
Fallout 3 will not suck unless you simply can't enjoy Bethesda RPGS.
Fallout 3 will not rule unless you love Bethesda RPGS.

I am resigned to the fact that I will think the game is halfway between 'mediocre' and 'good' because I think that of their other games. At the very least, 'Oblivion with Guns' is better than Oblivion without them (personally, I think the only reason they dug up this corpse is that they can't come up with anything better than the 'Holy Roman Empire with Elves' by themselves).

Bioware developed NWN1. Atari merely published it.
Ironically, NWN2 was developed by Obsidian Entertainment which was founded by some of the people who worked on fallout.

I've played both Fallout games and liked them quite a lot, although I wouldn't say I'm a real Fallout fan. I won't hate Fallout 3 simply because it's different. But, after quitting Oblivion after the 5th or 6th identical Oblivion gate in an otherwise completely generic world, that completely revolves around the player, I'm just pretty skeptical when Bethesda describes Fallout 3 as "Oblivion with guns".
I know that Oblivion was a success. But just because something is successful doesn't mean it's a great thing for me... just take a look at the music charts to get an impression of what the "general public" likes. Same applies to games.
Am I an elitist gamer? Perhaps, I don't care and I didn't set out to be one. Still: I didn't enjoy most of the blockbuster games last year and I simply fear that Fallout 3 will be a blockbuster game through and through: Simplified to the point that it gets playable for half an hour before you go to bed to appeal to as many people as possible.

Nevertheless I hope for the best and will give Fallout 3 a try when it comes out. I'm just not that hyped about it and keep my expectations low.

i honestly can't see the problem for fallout fans. It's like crawling for years and years across a hot desert then complaining when you're offered a pepsi instead of a coke. I'd rather a shitty Fallout 3 than nothing.

Just wow, I wish I could make as clear, concise and in my thoughts compelling arguments as that. I take my hat off to you sir.

Honestly? I think after crawling through the desert I'd take plain water over everything else ;)
But your analogy doesn't fit: I guess the number of people that wouldn't survive without a new Fallout is pretty small... so... it's just not the same. It's just natural that fans of a series get cautious when another company continues the series, especially when it's a decade after the last installment and so far seemingly has nothing in common with the previous games except the setting and the name. I think that is pretty understandable.

I have played the original Fallout(s) and I absolutely love them. I have logged an obscene amount of time in Bethesda's Oblivion(between replays and DLC) because I am such a fan. So that being said, Fallout 3 should be like the Wonder Twins-(fist touch)-FORM OF INCREDIBLE F'ING GAME! Right? Well maybe not like the Wonder Twins, they had Gleep which made them awesome. It will at least be as cool as those twins from the Dreadnoks. Who's names escape me... Anyway Fallout 3, can't wait.

How can you complain when you're dead?
I mean, unless you can survive without food or water for over a month.
