I would like to subject everyone to a breif glimps of the future of the Home and what I beleive the real strategy behind this "killer app" is.
This Christmas, and for several years after, Joe Notagamer will step into his local retailer (or back of a truck) for a new Blu-ray player and as instructed by retailers will walk out with a 97% dependability, websurfing, game playing PS3. When Joe plugs in this new devise he will be prompted to (after several downloads) enter Sony's new internet application dubbed Home. Curiousity being a key factor in human behavior and evalution, he will soon find himself in an appealing enviroment where he can be "himself". He takes all of 2 seconds to notice walking (another natural human function) is as simple as pressing forward on his wireless KB or sixaxix controller (key to Wii sales being its easy-to-use interface).
A few more easy steps and he finds himself in a sprawling enviroment that has all the basic draws of the internet without the pop-ups (argueably), viruses, hackers, and financial comentment that have kept him from enjoying the core PC users experience for years. Joe notices people chatting with eachother simple by being near others. He notices his favorite TV show on the virtual bigscreen, oh look.... theres the new Ironman movie, maybe he will rent it without leaving his "home". He notices the new LBP game his kids have been wanting for Christmas is purchaseable without him standing in line at Toys R Us listening to brats scream. He sees interesting looking people dancing and having a good time chatting about nothing in particula. He notices a shop where he can get a shirt with his favorite TV shows logo on it for FREE.
So instead of him just watching the same boring thing on TV (besides Lost
) he spends the rest of his day engulfed in this easy-to-use application collecting items or falling into a social structure. This otherwise non-gamer/PC freak has just recieved his first dose of "internet addiction" in a form anyone between the ages of 6 to 100 can use.
See you tomorrow Joe.
