Honestly though, I had a great PC that ran WoW for 2years.... I was constantly having to read manuals and call Egypt to fix it just enough to use it for one or 2 apps. Most people are tired of upgrading ever 1-2 years when the pages load 5 at a time and video loads faster than you can read it.... I'm a firefighter... really don't feal like going to a seminar or comunity college just to be able to use the internets fetures for more than 2years without paying extra money. Thats just me, and most of the world...
But a games console is less reliable and would need upgrading more frequently. Plus, I would put my mortgage on the home feature being slower than IE or Firefox. Regardless of internet speed. And who said using that internet is complicated? No more complicated than using Home. Probably less complicated in fact.

Less reliable? Your thinking of a certain home entertainment system without browser ability (that gives the info faster than you could ever take it in), harddrive, Blu-ray, printer support, camera support, video support, DL ability, that needs all those upgrade upgrades... 97% reliability... no virus know to man 2 years after its release. I'm not ragging on you, your just not informed on it's capibilities.

Anyway, I'm going to look for something to expand my mind... was hoping to increase others knowledge and recieve some feedback on Home that I didn't know, thus expand my knowledge on Sony's grand scheme... I'll check and see if there is any that results from the post later.

and porn. Lotsa porn.
I wonder if Sony'll have porn at Home. As in, "I'm going Home to get some porn. Be back in an hour." Joe seems lonely and impotent. He should give me his PS3 and then stand in the middle of a freeway waiting for "God to take me home."

I am informed of it's capabilities, who said I don't own one? But it isn't nearly as reliable as a PC. Don't mean to sound harsh, but when you describe a hard-drive as a bonus you probably don't know what you're talking about. My original point was that PC's have everything that comes with a PS3 and more. Miles more.
Additionally, your snide little remark about the 360 just makes you seem like a total shill.

Hello, my name is WTEricson, and I would like to run down the merits of Home, the new service for the PS3 coming out this holiday season.

Once the Home application has been downloaded to your Playstation 3's hard drive, the user can quickly and easily create an avatar and then enter a vast online community of other Home users. The control scheme is simple, with movement not even requiring movement of the left analogue stick, thanks to the SIXAXIS controller's motion sensing ability.

It is my belief that Playstation Home will surpass modern day internet browsers for a few reasons. Firstly, Home will be free from viruses, spyware and pop up advertisements. Secondly, everything is available to the user easily. The user's in game personification can chat with his or her friends, see movie trailers, and buy Playstation Three games all at the same time.

The real beauty of Home is that all this, and more, is Free to all Playstation 3 owners. Gone are the days when you were constrained to lacklustre television and buggy web browsers, the future of the internet is Home.
There. And I know bugger all about Home.

I believe you can upload images from a flashdrive, so porn seems an inevitability.

Besides, you're missing the importance of a keyboard for blogging and myspace (unless PS3 has a keyboard, correct me if I am wrong).
And comeon.... The importance of PrOn (j/k)

But if "home" can access any website the PC can, why can't it be exposed to the same viruses?

And you're forgetting this... http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/op-ed/5172-The-Needles-Piracy-Bad-For-You-Good-For-Them

Ignoring the ragging on the PS3, I'll focus on the question at hand. I see where he's going with this, and personally, I think it's entirely possible that Home could become popular on a MySpace level. This is requiring however that they can get the fact that it exists out there and get a PS3 into more households. To summarize, if Sony really presses it, works on it, and makes it friendly to the average consumer, they could have a little chunk of new pop culture here.

I'd like to say I wasn't ragging on the PS3. I think it's a strong consoles and has some very interesting features. My point was that these features make for a very weak reason to buy it when you can get all of those and more on a PC.
I'm not sure if Home will really take off as expected though. Are there really enough people with a PS3 to make that happen? And like I said I don't think people will rush out to buy it just so they can make a little person, walk them around, talk to randomers etc. If they wanted to do that they could just use Habbo for free.

I don't think you buy it, it's supposed to be a free application that's downloaded to your PS3. They're going to try and make it as pay free as possible with some cool features that you would pay for.

I don't really know what to expect from Home, but after seeing some Beta videos (both from the US and Japan servers) I'm quite excited for it and i think it looks cool.

So, the people who did I Want A PSP For Christmas got a new job. Not real subtle but you should be able to justify your check with this.

I apologize, I just brushed over the previous stuff and it basically seemed to be 'PS3 too expensive, therefore sucks'. Now, I will admit as much as the PC has it's advantages, but that's not what I'm arguing (Though, admittedly the PC has Second Life which is like Home but with 150% more yiffing). What I'm getting at is that it may do a perfect job of blending a gaming console with a media device while still being a functional social device and Home has the potential to combine all three into one. I'm not saying it will, but I'm saying that I personally think, if Sony works everything right and doesn't do anything overly self-destructive, this may actually turn out to be one of the highest selling points for their console.

1st up, ya I haven't used a PC for a year (typed all this on wireless KB), instead I use a PS3 on a $4000 LG.

2nd, ya... you can pirate with PS3... but I never would because it will come back and bite us on the ass.

3rd, there is no Virus as of yet for the PSBrowser and Home (browser), doesn't meen there won't ever be... just 100% safe atm. And it seems in Sony's best interest to nip a virus app in the bud... which will kill the market of selling you a fix for your entertainment system.

Lastly, great article... opened my mind upa bit more... thank you.

Well, I do see your point. But I guess I'm one of these people only really wants a games console to be a games console. A DVD player seems like a logical addition but when you add something like this... will it detract from the games system? Put more of an emphasis on the features than actually making good games with some depth. Maybe. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

As an aside, I'm not crazy on Miis or this upcoming 360 equivalent. When I turn on my console, I don't really want to have a little 3D version of me staring at me, plus I'll miss my VG Cats gamerpicture. I don't see why Microsoft would want to change a system which is, in all fairness, the strongest start-up of the 3. Just simple here's your games, here's your downloads and here's you options.

Well, how I view it is what Xbox Live would be like if it itself were turned into a game, so that's how I justify it. As far as the games thing goes, I understand and agree with your point, however, this novelty era of things like this was inevitable. Maybe we'll get lucky and the respective companies will remember that game companies are supposed to make, ya know, games.

I agree, but thankfully, the 360 version is not mandatory. From what I've heard you can switch between the two, and if this isn't true, then it will be by the time it's out given E3's universal response to it being 'WWWHHHHHHHHHHHYYYY!?!!'. I know Microsoft trying to make itself more family friendly, but they seem to have enough common sense to know how to do that without alienating their original fanbase.

Anything that pulls in the mainsteam and adults is great for the gaming business and the gaming culture. I find people that rag on mainsteam joining are elitists that are afraid of freindly competition in there environment.

Basicly I think Home is revolutionary... when I hear it's boring in Beta tests its the equivalant to a Forum being boring when theres noone in it... or the phone being boring when noones on the other line (elevator music), it's the culmination of all the things we love about the internet but easy... zhit, if I could buy a safe/free-to use teleporter instead of a Car for cheaper... I'de be pretty ignorant not to.

Sony has admittedly always had my love.... when I opened my mind to the idea behind Home they received my admiration and respect.
