Why not just include Wedge?

Wedge was around in a lot of post-Jedi content, and his presence could work here, too.

Tycho, Wedge, Hobbie and Janson all made it through Death Star II, Tycho drawing off Interceptors inside the Death Star giving Wedge a shot at the core... (crazy f'n A-Wing jocks).
I give guys like that credit, Luke had the Force, these guys were just that damn good to survive so long against the meat grinder of the Empire.

I just hope they don't go and make the jedi as obnoxiously overpowered as they became in the prequels. They were basically psychic warrior-monks who used ancient but still effective melee weapons (since, apparently, the tech-base in Star Wars has plateaued and stagnated for the past 10,000 years or so). They had some powers, but a lot of their strength came from their training and obscure yet powerful weapons.

Then in the prequels they became magical supermen who could leap incredible distances, bowl over who groups of opponents with a twitch of their hand, and possessed such superhuman reflexes that trying to get the jump on them in any way was almost useless. And those abilities have only gotten even more embellished in the various Star Wars games and novels.

I'd like to see jedi reigned back in a little. Like, you wouldn't want to try and take on one alone, but a single jedi could never just hack and slash through a whole battalion of enemies on their own, powers or not.

And can we finally bring in some competent jedi hunters for a change? Jedi are not *that* hard to kill if you actually plan for them and equip yourself appropriately. Their lightsabers are only as effective as they are because they are specifically designed to counter the most common type of projectile weapon. Just, don't use blasters. I've never seen a single jedi wear armor. Can we get a villain who isn't afraid to just shoot at them with a good, old-fashioned slug-thrower? Or maybe use explosives or something? Watching all the baddies shoot at jedi ineffectually with blasters and/or allow them to close to melee is kind of dull after a while.

I remember Wedge... Couldn't do much in the first movie because his engine got taken out and had to pull out, but in Jedi he takes down the Death Star with Lando. I'd love to see a wicked awesome space flight/shooter game based on his missions for the rebels, ending in the Death Star takedown.

I remember the liking the fact that he was that he was clearly a badass pilot but was still a minor character side-badass.
You may want to check out Star Wars Rogue Leader than. It has ten missions, plus a couple of bonus ones. In the first three you play as Luke, starting off with the attack on the first Death Star, the rebels fleeing to Hoth, and the battle of Hoth itself. But in the middle of the Hoth mission, Luke's snow speeder is shot down, like in the movies. At that point, you take control of Wedge and stay in control with him for the rest of the mission, and the next seven missions after. His missions include, rescuing prisoners from an asteroid prison, a two missions involving getting the second death star plans, shooting down a Star Destroyer in the first one and attacking the downed craft, stealing the Imperial shuttle Luke and crew used in Return of the Jedi, a mission in Cloud City, the battle above Endor and, just like you asked, the run on the second Death Star.

Can't. Wedge isn't marketable enough for the masses. I wouldn't put it past Abrams to kill Wedge off in some contrived sacrifice to create drama, though chances are good that he will be a cameo at most.

But that doesn't mean I can't dream. Wedge gave a subtle nod of humanity to the films and unlike Boba Fett, Wedge's reputation actually has some precedence. He fought at both Death Star battles against incredibly poor odds, and was directly involved in the destruction of one of them.

Wedge is a phenomenal pilot but he's still just a guy; and especially human one in the X-Wing series and Shadows of the Empire. (oh right, those don't count anymore because they aren't canon)

His presence was needed to keep the mystical Force wankery in check and remind us that there are in fact competent regular people in Star Wars who aren't force users or directly related to the main characters; something the prequels were sorely lacking.

I hope I get to see Ace Azzameen on screen at some point. Hell, an x-wing alliance movie would be awesome. You know, I'll be honest here. I never gave two shits about any lightsaber fighting when it was on screen. Even the big philosophical story ones. Ever since the battle of yavin, my path as a sci-fi fan was set. Here we are in space and yet we're constantly sword fighting like it's the three friggin' musketeers. I guess it's cool for story reasons, but why can't there be a cool and legendary showdown in space?

It's not like that couldn't happen. Starfighter and x-wing alliance pulled it off in game form. Maybe this is because I had played a demo of star wars X-wing on the mac before I even knew what the hell star wars was. Hell, the x-wing's red engine glow and paintjob and callsign is the reason red is my favorite color.

Screw the jedi, screw the sith. I am a pilot and I will always be one.

Fun fact - guy that played Wedge is Ewan McGregor's uncle.
And as I recall from a Graham Norton Show episode, McGregor said that his uncle actually advised him against doing Star Wars. (Not sure how much of that was a jape though). Kind of underlies how much of a massive [pop?] cultural hit the franchise was that even ancillary characters developed major fan followings (though doubtless the Extend Universe must've helped too!). Hell, I remember falling in love with IG88 from that one Nintendo 64 game - Shadow of Empire(?).

For sure it'd be great to see some "everymans" in the series, people just trying to survive. Don't know why but I always figured there was scope for a "Star Wars meets Platoon" one-off movie following a group of storm troopers, of course that would depend on whether whoever's in charge of the universe wants to show the bad guys as "humans/clones."

I'll agree. Yavin, Hoth, and Endor were epic. The rest was pretty much hokey religion filler. That force stuff even infected fairly good stories. Ace Azzameen's story was pretty good. Merek Steele and Keeyan Farlander's stories from X-Wing and Tie-Fighter were great too, and then they decided to shoehorn in that both were "force sensetive." Laaammmeee. It's just like how they ruined Dark Forces. Sweet shooter, good story and characters... and then they decide to make Kyle Katarn just another lame Jedi, and the rest of the games sucked.

I'd enjoy seeing what this version does with Wedge. Regardless of how many lines Lawson had, NOBODY else can paint 2 death stars on his X-Wing. And that's not counting the EU stuff at all. I'd really doubt we'd see any of the other of the "Rogue 4" though. No chance at all of Tycho, who was never mentioned by name outside of the EU. Hobbie and Janson were name-dropped in the original films, but I still doubt they'd make an appearance.
