Melody drove by the bloody scene slowly, looking for signs of life from the kids...
"There! I see coughing! Guys, watch my back! I'll need two of you to help me carry these kids into the battle wagon!" She jumped out of the driver's seat and rushed to the scene. What she saw broke her heart.
One kid died, alright - a gunshot wound to the head - and he seemed to be the oldest of the three. The two younger ones were crying, and one of them had a wound on their leg. The still warm corpse had his arms protectively over the other two, a boy and a girl. The boy was facing the girl, trying to stem the blood coming out of her leg and singing a lullaby to her at the same time. The little girl was crying her eyes out, hitting the corpse's chest, as if to wake him up.
Melody called out carefully to them, "I'm a medic, my name is Melody. I'm here to help." She kept her eyes on the little boy as she approached them, not wanting to raise his defensive instincts any higher than it already was, and she waited until he nodded at her in confirmation before she started applying gauze on the girl's leg. "You applied pressure, good. I think we can save her leg." She kept talking to the boy, making sure he was still responsive. "I'm going to carry her to my vehicle, okay? I have a medical bay inside. Do you want to walk me there? These two men will help carry your brother - is...is he your brother?" she asked, respectfully inclining her head towards the corpse. The boy nodded. "Okay, these two men with me will help carry him into my vehicle, too, okay? Are you ready? Let's go."
As gently and as quickly as she could, she carried the little girl into the back of the battle wagon, placing her on the other gurney across from Danny. The little girl just cried harder, never taking her eyes off her dead brother.
