Sorry, I got a bit disjointed, I started talking about CE then moved on to reach without transition; my bad nyoro~! but the pistol was the ultimate campaign weapon, it killed hunters in one shot, and it could act as whatever it needed to be in the campaign. It acted as any type of weapon and had strong enough firepower to down an elite pretty quickly. I can't help but get the feeling that the ODST model was supposed to be the CE pistol, but someone swutched it without asking at the last second or somthing. Si-Fi pistols are always head-shop specific weapons, and usually suck in any other role. CE pistol...was not that.
No prob. Anyway, I just wanted to point out that while you're absolutely right that Halo 1's Pistol was the ultimate campaign weapon (FOR THE FIRST FIVE LEVELS ONLY, AFTER THE SHOTTY SHOWS UP THE PISTOL IS CRAP), almost all FPS games have a weapon like that, that the player ends up using because of its versatility. Halo 2 had the Beam Rifle and Battle Rifle, which were adaptable enough to every situation to take on basically any combination of baddies. Half-Life 2 had the Shotgun, which is pretty much a must-use from the time you get it to the end of the game (barring some instances when you must use the rocket launcher or crossbow to take out an enemy). Even in Deus Ex 2, I ended up using the SMG far more than any other gun (although I used the Baton more than anything, I bet) because it worked at most ranges.
In summary, I think the Pistol is a LITTLE overpowered in the first five levels of Campaign. Once the Shotgun is available and the Flood show up, there's no reason to carry the Pistol. I mean, you'll always want to have the Shotgun in your arsenal if possible, and generally it's wise to keep that extra slot for rotation as you pick up rocket launchers, plasma pistols and needlers. Two bullet weapons at a time seems extravagant, unnecessary and not particularly effective. As mentioned, the Pistol sucks hard against Elites, so that would mean to take out Elites with a Shotty/Pistol combo in the late game, you'd need to rush into shotty range (hard/impossible if there are more than 2 Elites, or a group of lesser baddies), get lucky/good with grenades (if you have them) or unload all your ammo at mid range and hope he can't get behind cover or take down your health first.
Halo 1 still has some of the most perfectly balanced multiplayer, in my opinion. The motion tracker > typical FPS radar in every possible way, since it brings in an element of strategy. Even the worst weapon, the Needler, is useful to discourage camping and tell you where your opponent is if you can't see him and he's not moving. Also, no real power weapons. Since everything kills everyone quickly, no one weapon is all that much better at doing the job. Rockets can theoretically get easy kills, but they're slow to fire, hit and reload. And no lock on.
But yeah, can't really disagree with you about the Pistol too much. I think people exaggerate the degree to which the Pistol is OP, but it's certainly very good in campaign.
