I remember Kingdom Hearts when you go back to your wooden sword for a level. Hated it but I loved the game.

I hate it when they're in the beginning of the game, because it's always done as a kind of 'Oh, look at all these cool powers! But you can't have them yet! Just play the gaaaaame!' No, bite me. You play the game.

If they happen in the middle of the game I'm liable to throw the disc at large groups of people.

I depends on how integral the powers are to the game. I was pissed in Sands of Time when I loss the dagger but usually I don't mind.

I loved that part. Not only was it not an arbitrary "Surprise, now you don't get to do cool stuff!" move, it also really emphasized that yes, those crazy jumps you're doing are dangerous as all hell and yes you did take the danger for granted.

Half Life 2's was awesome as well. They took all my guns, but gave me one I probably would have used exclusively anyway.

Any other game though? Fuck off, leave my powers and weapons alone!

The first Kingdom Hearts pulled this dirty little trick at the Hollow Bastion world. Especially hard and frustrating since I was a warrior and not a spell user outside of healing magic.

Also, my brain is a bit hazy this evening as I can only think of Prototype as an example of having this gimmick. *still loves the game though*
I quite liked that part of Prototype actually. It made me appreciate the basic punching and kicking style more than I lost them (When I had mostly been using claws/whip) which in turn made me realise how freaking awesome the musclemass power can be.

And personally? I'm fine with it. Bioshock did it well where they varied your powers and even gave you some that you might not have had before. I thought it worked quite well.
These are exactly my thoughts on prototype. Completely changed my playstyle, and made me appreciate more of the game.

In general though, I'm fine with it, unless it's a "Lol you have no powers now: Start back at level one completely" type. At least let me get back my powers quickly, instead of having to re-earn them.

The thing that gets me about these missions is only about half of them actually feel right. For how much I hated it and groaned when they did it in, I begrudgingly accepted it as it made sense, storywise, in Prototype. I still grumbled to holy hell the whole time and shot through the levels as soon as possible to get it over with though...

It always pisses me off though, always. If you want to challenge me, challenge me. Don't dumb me down so you can pretend to challenge me because anybody can kick a kitten.

As far as preview of powers go, I love and hate them. I like getting a feel for what I will get but I also loathe having the surprise ruined. Sure the degrade in power in Assassin's Creed was tolerable and made sense for the story, blah blah... But why ruin the surprise?

It is one of the reasons I am looking forward to Assassin's Creed 2. Instead of starting in the middle of a guy's career and getting dumbed down for penance, we get to be at the beginning of his career and work our way up. It makes me feel like I am part of the story from the ground level instead of some middle manager coming in after the company got off the ground, so to speak.

My first thoughts were Mega Man games (some like the MM X series started you off with the previous games gear, and then jacked it all from you), and Metroid Prime. I sadly never played Metroid Prime 2 or 3, but in the start of Prime 1, you go through the station with all your powers. Then a freak explosion does you in, and you need to power up from there on in.

It's great if it's a preview of things to come, or a reason why the sequel doesn't feature the improved powers of the previous game, but it's annoying in the middle of a current game.

The prototype style of doing it isnt too common. The metroid/assassin's creed "Start out with everything for the first mission then lose it because something almost kills you" is much more common and annoying

It is particularly bad for Prototype since it is a time where free-roam is hindered. If it was just for a mission, start of mission lose powers, end of mission get back, fine (sorta) but not when you should be allowed to go and have fun anytime.

Ya I kinda scratched my head when it opened back up to free roam before I got my powers... Especially since I then had to run to get that mission again. I remember thinking: "Why the fuck would I want to roam around in a military zone without all my nifty hard earned power?"

I like it when they give you something else really fun to play with (Half Life 2) or if it ties in well with the plot (Bioshock) and does not feel tacked on in any way.

Usually Capcom are guilty of this.

You have the first level Reaking of awesome. Then you have a crippling accident & either suffer from amnesia or just end up sucking for the next 6 hours.

I hate it.

I know I fucking hate it. You often spend a lot of time building up those powers only to have them taken away. Tis bullshit.

I dislike it a lot, however I think this is something that will never go away like most* trailers have it narrated by some wolverine empressionist.
* most meaning 95%

The time they did this in Rainbow Six : Vegas was particularly retarded I mean who leaves a guy with a pistol and doesn't check that he is dead. I mean a bullet costs like 20c or something.

I can't stand it It just seems very uncreative "O she stole my powers! now I must chase her and kill her to get them back" horrible way to sneak in another chapter

Do all of these Metroid examples really count? You lose your powers at the very beginning of the games (and you only really got to test drive them in the first two Prime games). You don't lose a whole lot most of the time anyway (missiles, possibly charge beam, and morph ball). They're getting better about it now too, so this argument is becoming a little obsolete. The same argument can apply to every game sequel anyway (what happened to the rocket launcher I got in the last game?!) so I don't think it works.

On topic: I'm not all that bugged by them. The Assassin's Creed example seems a little egregious though. How do you forget physical dexterity?
