Metroid suffers from this allot. but i think its a part of the game that you cant remove. I mean if there is no backtracking, fech quests and ridiculous undogeable attacks from bosses then its not metroid.

The example of this that annoys me most is when that happens in destroy all humans! and you have to hop around using mind powers.

All of the FarCrys are guilty of this as well...

Personally, I don't mind them as long as I get them back after the level/mission.

Goldeneye's Bunker 2 and Archives missions comes to mind, but it's forgivable since you gain a pistol almost immediatley both times. Perfect Dark not so much- taking on 2 Skedar guards with a knife in mission 8 is a fast way to die.

I usually dislike when FPSes do this to you to force you into poorly thought-out stealth segments, because usually the patrolling guards are just as hard to dodge as normal and you end up getting trapped in a corner punching frantically.
Goldeneye made if fun, though. Especially using gadgets to free yourself, then karate chopping to death the first hapless sap that you find on your way to freedom.

Metal gear solid 3, Prototype, Fable 1 AND 2. Black and white 1 (on two occasions, how annoying is that?) Legend of zelda twilight princess (once again on more than one bloody occasion) Never winter nights, Destroy all humans, Stalker clear sky, Cryis warhead (a little bit at one point) X111. Assassins creed. Half life 2 (admittedly only to be given an even more overpowered weapon but still) Bioshock. Legend of zelda wind waker, Metroid Prime, Kingdom hearts, Prince of persia And those are only the ones I can think of. The main culprit is games that fling you into easy combat without a tutorial level, but with all your powers, then whisk them away and explain WHAT IT IS JUST JUST DID A SECOND AGO. Which is awfully confusing. Especially if the combat tutorial is too long and you get used to using all your abilities, meaning you cant function without them (Im looking sternly at assassins creed here, how the hell do you FORGET how to do manurers if you loose your rank anyway? If that's how it works then why does the main villain guy not just make sure you loose your job every time you become a threat?)

If it's well-executed it can add some nice variation to a game without just being silly. I'm thinking of the undead campaign in Frozen Throne where Arthas gradually loses power. It works quite nicely, especially the massive dungeon level. Plus it fits in well with the plot and adds a nice sense of urgency that's usually really tricky to get with RTS games.

The ones that annoy me are generally the really spurious ones. God of War II is the most recent one I can think of - the fact that Kratos just decides to dump all of his divine powers into the sword without even a moment's consideration. Despite Athena saying 'Dude, the other Gods are totally out for your blood' less than 10 minutes previous. And Zeus's ominous 'What I do, I do for the good of all olympus. *coughcoughBYWHICHIMEANKILLYOURSTUPIDASScoughcough*'. It just strikes me as lazy writing and a testament to how agonisingly stupid our beloved spartan is.

It especially bugs me in games like KOTOR where you spend the entire game leveling a character so powerful you only really need him, the other party members are just for fun. :p
And then you get abducted or split up....or your character develops a cupcake addiction.

I usually love these parts, forces you to change up your gameplay in a BIG way and makes the game feel fresh all over again.

Oddly enough, Assassin's Creed didn't bug me that much. I had a hard time getting into the game at first but once I did, I enjoyed the hell out of it. As for his loss of skills, I actually took the imaginary leap of faith that the poison had fucked his body up as well. They did say it was false death so I figured that kind of trauma had to fuck up something in the head to be relearned.

But I can see how it could be very annoying as it did take some getting used to. I was more pissed at loss of counter kills... >_>

The first Kingdom Hearts pulled this dirty little trick at the Hollow Bastion world. Especially hard and frustrating since I was a warrior and not a spell user outside of healing magic.
I picked warrior too, and then the only way to get past that part is to rely on your AI controlled buddies. Oh yay.

Man that part sucked :(

As gimmicks go, its up there with regenerating health bars in game lore.

But nowhere was it more stupidly implemented than in X-men origins: Wolverine. I missed 1 set of dog tags in the whole game... and it was on the power-loss level purely because without feral senses I had no way of noticing it in the first place.

In terms of story, though, it made sense, but didn't need to happen 'there', so I can't complain too much, but even when you read the comics, Logan may get weak, but he never loses everything mutant that he can do.

Oddly, I don't hate regenerating health bars. They help keep the battle going without the healthpack scavenger hunt but I can see both sides of the argument for and against those. I tend to do alright either way though I prefer a "reason" to have regeneration as opposed to just having it. I was finding myself subconsciously trying to pick up cars on Saint's Row 2 after playing too much Prototype. After, I was still a freak of nature who could take a car to the chest and still get up. ;)

I keep hearing about the lose powers thing on Wolverine and it is making me want to Not grab the game...

Well, in the first 3 Tomb Raider games they take your weapons away at one point. But at least you can get them back. You can't get most of your firepower back in Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (which was a dick move extrodinare, IMO)
