I quit Far Cry 2 because of what happened about mid-game where you lose everything. I was fine with what Assassin's Creed did because it was the beginning of the game.

Agh curse metroid for that. The start of every game has you lose all the useful peices of your suit and the rest of the fucking game makes you collect them. I mean if you never lost them the game would be like an hour long. I know it's essential to the game but it got really old really fast.

I always wonder why they don't plan for this since it seems to happen Every Single Mission...

ohhh ho hohohoho....... metroid..............
at the begining of every game you lose all your previous powers.
i know its the start of a new game but, i hate backtracking!!!
though on metroid zero mission you lose all your powers and are reduced to zero suite samus toword the end of the game
That was actually decent fun to me for some of it, but, more importantly, was just
Samus gets her awesome suit back with even more additions than before and proceeds to hand the space pirates asses to them
which was awesome.

The title states it clearly to what we are going to gab about. The lose your powers mission/chapter. Do you hate it or love it? Personally I detest it as it always feels like a stall tactic for a challenge but we aren't here to talk about my whining. I want your thoughts and opinions.

Also, my brain is a bit hazy this evening as I can only think of Prototype as an example of having this gimmick. *still loves the game though*

So, my fine friends, what are your thoughts and names of games with this gimmick?
Oh how I love Prototype. The "lose your powers" bullshit got old, especially since it went on for about FIVE FUCKING MISSIONS!

Hate it but there's no use complaining because, as with escort quests, they will always be around no matter how much people hate them.

It gets old really quickly. God Of War and Assassins Creed are the main I thought of
Assassin's Creed wasn't really a "lose your powers" mission. You lost them before the story even started, and had to earn them back. It was more like a creative upgrade mechanic.

Oh they annoy me so. At least when it happened in BIOSHOCK it was interesting, as you did get powers back, but random powers instead of the ones you had.

The only thing more annoying than them are the pointless "Get me X and I'll give you Y" Quests. Either them or a rise in Tax.

It's kinda like the 'all to nothing' strategy for devs.

See in the tutorial you have all the powers unlocked and and are very much overpowered. Then when the real game starts you lose all that and you have to earn them again.
This makes you play the game just a little more because you know that if you just defeat that one boss you'll unlock that cool ability that you remember.

I'm not particularly fond of such missions. When Prototype did it, I got stuck using a tank for most of the combat. Not that tanks aren't awesome, but I just think that shooting a bladed tentacle at a helicopter, or dicing my enemies with huge ass claws is cooler. I liked the new powers you got after though, arguably made it all worth it.

X-men Origins how ever...

That damn turret puzzle was the only time I died in that game. It did kinda remind me how much I relied on the healing factor, but it still annoyed the crap out of me, seeing as all those missions always felt super long to me.

It depends. If it happens early on because the game is a sequel, then it's not so bad. However, it has to make sense in the plot; an arbitrary reset is a nuisance. I know there has to be character development and advancement as well as enemies that are actually challenging, but games could go the route of just upping the difficulty of monsters rather than stamping on a lazy arbitrary reset. Hell, I do this with my D&D games; my friends like to play in the epic levels, so I let them, and rarely take their crap; I just send harder monsters than exist in canon D&D.

God of War 2 I actually don't mind since the event where you lose your powers is extremely plot important; hell, the game wouldn't make ANY sense without it. That style is fine; the Megaman constant-reset is annoying (though in that case, at least the games stand on their own).

Depends entirely on the game and what they are doing with it. I am currently playing through Dark Messiah, in which there is a point where you lose everything in your inventory, which makes sense based on the story, however, I also lost the use of my spells, which did not make sense to me. However, it was used to introduce a nifty new power, and forcing me to use it made me aware of what it could do. Also, that part was pretty short, so it was ok. But mostly, those levels suck.

Hate them. I just got done with Avalon Code a couple of weeks ago, and it was really annoying ton not even be able to recharge my health in emergencies.

Here is a quirky thing I've noticed... A lot of these missions seem to end with getting a new power or weapon. Perhaps I shouldn't question that which works but I would like to think we could do better in a plot, ya know?

It pisses me off. The idea is to start off completely from the bottom and only get better.

The worst example of this I can think of is the undead campaign in WC3:TFT. They took your lvl 10 Arthas and made him weaker as the game got harder. When he reaches lvl 1 in the final part he can start getting stronger again but on the parts when hes about lvl3 and bascially alone its near impossible.
