Prototype is the most recent example I can think of. It annoyed me so much the first play through but the second and third I barely even noticed it. The first time around I was still getting used to everything and still learning to play. :x I kept getting my ass kicked for it.

I think that if it helps with the story and it doesn't make the player feel like they are being punished just from playing the game then it is O.K. as far as prototype goes, it wasn't really that bad... I mean, it was kind of annoying but there were guns and tanks which you could use to offset the loss of your powers, its not like they took all of your powers, you still had your movement powers, which were the best part of the game.

It gets old really quickly. God Of War and Assassins Creed are the main I thought of
Hmmm, where does that happen in Assassin's Creed? I can't think of any point where that happens, except at the start when you lose everything, and that's part of the game anyway so you get your weapons and so on back throughout the game.

I've been playing through Kingdom Hearts again recently and near the end, when you first arrive in Hollow Bastion, you lose the Keyblade and Donald and Goofy leave the party, replaced by The Beast. Fortunately the Beast saves your skin with his uber-cool and powerful moves, but to me it's pretty pointless. Especially as it only matters for about two short, avoidable battles then you get them all back in the next area (Entrance Hall of the Castle).

Also, my brain is a bit hazy this evening as I can only think of Prototype as an example of having this gimmick. *still loves the game though*
I quite liked that part of Prototype actually. It made me appreciate the basic punching and kicking style more than I lost them (When I had mostly been using claws/whip) which in turn made me realise how freaking awesome the musclemass power can be.

And personally? I'm fine with it. Bioshock did it well where they varied your powers and even gave you some that you might not have had before. I thought it worked quite well.
Same here, it made me appreciate my claws and whipfist even more, and is there anything more badass than disguising as an old man and beating the crap out hordes of hunters in the infected area?

Ahhh yes, they get you all worked up, then smack your face on the ground. Prototype and Assassin's Creed come to mind. I think I also recall a shooter I played once in wich you had all kinds of badass weapons, wich were also stripped away from you. Can't recall the title though.

But, I must say, they do have an upside. It makes getting those powers again all the more satisfying.

The first Kingdom Hearts pulled this dirty little trick at the Hollow Bastion world. Especially hard and frustrating since I was a warrior and not a spell user outside of healing magic.
Triangle button saved me multiple times during that. Spam the Beast! Spam the Beast!
[small]sorry...back to the OP[/small]
I happen to like those types of missions, but only because it's usually near the end of the game and you know almost every way to take out an enemy.

You know what is worst than that? The lose your powers for no good reason or explanation.

You can see that is a lot of RPG sequels... No matter how much time you spend turning your party into a powerhouse, by the begining of the next game you are back to square 1... At least God of War provided an explanation for that.

Weird how when this happened in Super Mario Sunshine the opposite was true.
Anyway...
I didn't find the Wooden Sword section in Kingdom Hearts I that annoying... mostly because most of it was spent underground trying to figure out another lazy "gates" puzzle... (you know, opening certain gates closes others and vice versa)
These levels, sections, etc are annoying but also quite challenging.
When done well, of course.

The "lose all of your items/weapons etc." is a popular variation on this theme that probably qualifies a lot more games for this, and is completely based around the same concept.
Think at least one level in each Thief game.
Or nearly every FPS with a storyline.
It happens in GTA IV when you get pulled over by the cops and don't get shot to death... fucking took my combat sniper rifle....

It depends.

I hate the system of gaining lost superpowers as the game progresses. Either give all of them from the start or stop teasing us. Assassin's Creed was absolutely a pain in the arse. All I wanted to do is destroy the Templars right from the start. I felt like a little kid put in a corner. Prototype had a similar problem.

And when it happens in mid-game it's just awful.

One thing though, couldn't they have the item hunting without an arbitrary lose your shit event? Perhaps have Samus be briefed that they can't afford to kit her out from the beginning due to detection issues but give her a suit that absorbs weaponry from the indigenous technology thus leaving basic maneuvers intact while allowing for the story to come up with creative ways to give her new weapons?

Or is the writer in me just trying too hard to avoid a cliche'? -_-
They did that in Metriod Fusion, after Samus had to have some parts of Power Suit removed because X parasites infested the suit and almost killed her.

At least they tried my idea before I had it. XD

Prototype did have a good reason (story wise) for doing it... The game was set X days ago before you got those powers.

Personlly, I don't care for it, but it doesn't really bother me that much if it is at the begining of the game. A-La Prototype and God of War. It is kinda like, "this is how cool you are going to be later". What I really hate is when you are far along in the game and they take away your powers, like Prototype did. I can't think of another example right now, but in principle this just pisses me off. You give us all these cool toys/powers, just let us use them. Don't take them away to creat more challenge, think of a challenge for the powers/toys we have.

Didn't bother reading the entire thread, so this might've been here already, but

CORAODA (Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena xD)

before the semi-final boss fight. "Oops I've dropped my gun, it slided under a table and ALL MY OTHER WEAPONS disintegrated. How unfortunate" -.-'
I found it very unnerving, especially cause you can't block the bit...woman's attacks with that fething bobbypin you'Äre supposed to skewer her with.
most other games obviously managed to pull that one off pretty good cause i can't think of another example right now.... weird xD

If they're well-done it's fine. It's when they take them away and expect you to be able to take out the same number of enemies whom you struggled to take down with the guns/powers/whatever. That's annoying.

I don't know if this counts, but I enjoyed the R&C: Tools of destruction mission where you loose clank and are forced to navigate the level without the ability to make long jumps.

Also the Red Faction (original) mission where you loose all your weapons and only have a silenced pistol and a suit is pretty good.

I can accept it if it's losing powers you had in a previous game. I can also accept it if they take it away in the middle of the game if I'm given a good explanation, but I'm still going to bite someones ear off.
