Dawn looked ready to explode when Alex talked back to her. She did her best to restrain herself (and the smoke escaping her collar) as Enapay spoke to Alex, turning her back and crossing her arms as if pouting, but the way she hunched her shoulders and bowed her head suggested she was doing something else. She hoped the smoke would hide the wisps of steam coming from her eyes.
Enapay put his hands on her shoulders. The skin through her cotton shirt felt like a hotplate under a cheap oven mitt. She only nodded when he finished speaking, but stared resolutely at the ground. She swallowed hard as she thought to herself, The wails are back. I told you to forget this memory. So why is it still here? ... No. I'm not going back there. Think of something else. Anything else.
She walked over to her discarded jacket and tied the sleeves around her waist, then walked back over near Voltage, standing a short distance away, clenching and unclenching her smoldering fists and looking at his face like he was a fresh plate of meat for her to cook.
