Just a few hours ago me and a buddy were playing Demon's Souls and we were steadily on our way to the Demon Boss. Now, the two of us are big, strong fellows of a considerate high level with many demon carcasses in our wake. We had just spend 5 minutes taking pot shots at a dragon that was clung to the side of the castle. From a safe distance we wore the lizard down untill it ultimately gave up the ghost.

So we were feeling pretty damn good about ourselves and arm in arm we joyfully skipped onward to King Doran's throne room to confront the old bastard. Ofcourse we knew he'd be a tough nut to crack, afterall he is a king.
But the amount of whoopass by wich we were smote was unlike any I had ever encountered. We half expected to be slain, this is after all Demon's Souls. But King Doran actually has the power to DRAIN YOUR CHARACTER LEVEL! You can imagine my initial respone.

".......................................................GASP................................................................."

All of a sudden I had dropped from level 62 to 58 and I didn't even win. All those hours of leveling up................GONE FOREVER. This is without a doubt the most painful feeling of loss I've ever felt during a game.

What is the most brutal agony you've ever experienced during a game?

Spending forever trying to beat all the side-quests of Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, only to find that I'm now powerful enough to make the rest of the game unbelievably easy and boring.

Playing any Call of Duty game on Veteran. Beating MW2 on Veteran was one of my greatest accomplishments, but I have PTSD now.

Playing Damnation,Digimon World 4, and DragonBall Z: Sagas. That is true agony.

Jesus Christ... I'm never playing that game.

I resent any game that makes me feel like I wasted hours of playtime.

Its still worth it. Demon's Souls is hands down in my top 3 PS3 games right behind Assassin's Creed 2 and MGS4.

Nothing can amount to the level of satisfaction gained when you finally beat the ************. Hours of trying to get past it, countless deaths and then finally killing him can easily surpass the feeling of any orgasm and I couldn't have been any nerdier at that moment.

Just to clear things up. The Soul level of a character goes up with every upgrade you make to any single stat. These levels will not be difficult to get back as long as he knows where to get enough souls (Level 4-2, shoot the Reaper with your bow, run back to the Archstone, rinse, repeat). The game is by no means "shit". Its one of the best PS3 games out.

That game was a bit frustrating. Good thing I read your review though, I was about to fanboy-rage...

Edit: I just realized I had the wrong level for farming souls. Its 4-2. I did the levels in a weird order so I get them mixed up...

When my ***** of a cousin deleted my file in Pokemon Red in which I had 135 pokemon caught, and my top 6 were all at or above level 60 - my 10 year old heart was broken that day..... seriously though, I'd caught fucking Chansey AND Taurus from the Safari Zone just 2 days before that happened - those are SO FUCKING HARD to catch. Needless to say, it took me a long time before I played again.

Either that, or beating World at War on Veteran - I have never sworn so much in my life.

Getting all the ultimate weapons in FFX is a pain in the ass. It's not impossible, I've done it twice now, but it takes hours of exhaustive frustration. It was especially painful during the Chocobo Catcher.

I had played up to the end of Final Fantasy VII. I was at the end of the game. Sephiroth stood before me, and I was ready to finally beat this game. Unfortunately, I had to go to school.

No big deal. I'm usually a fairly patient person, so I felt that this victory would be worth the wait. Little did I know the horror I was in for when I got home...

I turned my game on and loaded what I thought was my file. I was certainly surprised when my game loaded in the starting area.

Seems as though my brother had started a new game and thought it would be a good idea to save over my file.

I still haven't beaten FFVII to this day...

Yeah, level drain is always bad.
Permanent character death is annoying too.

Having to go sleep at an inn to level is bad, especially when it costs mad money.

I think dungeons of the unforgiven or Moria were the worst...

Maybe when I was first playing through contra:hard corps

Actually, just last week I was doing my Veteran run on MW2 and got to Loose Ends. I was in the Estate, with my ACR and M4A1, prone on the stairs where I always sit. I got a checkpoint literally TWO SECONDS before three Ultranationalists in three different corners of the room destroyed the DSM. It was not possible to continue, and I was at 2000-something out of 2000-whatever. Not the most painful thing ever, but the wound is fresh.

EDIT: Oh, and I also hate when your best NPC party member that you spent SO MUCH MONEY on dies or takes off and you aren't compensated.

I was doing my 3rd play through of saints row 2 and in one sitting I got from the begining to beating every gang, and the first mission of ultor. I then turned it off without saving, and since I had a few cheats on to dick around with, it didn't save and I had to start all over......FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!

Not exactly while I was playing games, but I was letting a cousin of mine play my PS3 while I was at work (he earned me completion points in games I had no interest in replaying, so it was win/win) and he performed a reset to factory default for reasons unknown to me. I lost all of my PS1/2/3 saves and data.
