A girl wearing a red dress ran barefoot through the forest, fleeing into the dense trees in a desperate attempt to elude her pursuer. She could not hear his footfalls behind her but dared not turn around; she knew he was there, moving with demonic agility, eyes burning with the insurmountable desire to feed.

Pain shot through her leg as something sharp dug into her heel, but the girl suppressed her instinct to yelp and pressed onward, weaving past trunks of increasing thickness as she neared the heart of the woods. Yet she was exhausted-- her lungs were on fire-- and she knew she could never hope to outpace the mutant parahuman. Maybe if she hid-- just maybe-- he would be unable to locate her in the vast, confounding forest. But her dress was a glaring beacon in the sombre green; it screamed "blood," and realizing this the girl ripped the garment off her body in a single motion and left it fluttering in her wake.

Ahead, the sound of a river seemed to ignite a golden ray of hope in the girl's mind: something about vampires not being able to cross running water? Was that one real? It didn't matter; she would hide in the water and move with the river, leaving no trail for him to follow. Reaching the bank she slid down the slick escarpment and lost her balance-- she landed on her knees and then lowered herself into prone position. The girl snaked her way through the mud and river-slime until she reached the slow-flowing green water, cold but bearable in the balmy night, and slipped into its flow. The water was unfortunately low here-- barely enough to cover the girl's prone form, but she was nevertheless able to submerge her entire body and feel her way along the bed.

Enough time passed in this manner that the girl's frantic, terror-stricken mind calmed enough for her to reflect on the absurdity of her situation, slithering through the river like an eel in nothing but her formerly white underwear, but no sooner did she allow herself to indulge this thought than a vice closed around her neck and dragged her out of the water. Through the tendrils of dripping wet hair hanging in her face the girl saw a visage of pure hunger, a wicked expression of pleasure at the imminent fulfillment of one's primal desire. She wanted to scream and look away but could not manage to do either as the parahuman's fanged maw opened wide... and out of it came a silver cross at the end of a rigid black shaft. The girl stared at this; the confusion on her face was grotesquely mirrored in that of the vampire which still held her by the neck. Suddenly another of these crosses sprouted from the vampire's chest, then another. The girl felt the pressure around her throat mercifully slacken and she finally screamed, then shoved the vampire in the shoulder with all her force. He spun and fell, landing face-first in the water with a flop, and there he remained. Four of the black shafts protruded from her attacker's back, each neatly placed at points along the spine.

With wobbling knees the girl clambered out of the water and finally collapsed on the bank. As she struggled to regain control of her breathing and her thoughts a shadow detached itself from the trees on the opposite side of the river; a silhouette of a tall woman dressed in flowing black robes, resting what was unmistakably a crossbow on her shoulder. The girl watched as this mysterious woman solemnly performed the Sign of the Cross and then disappeared into the night; still utterly astonished and unable to think clearly, the girl found herself making the Sign of the Cross as well.

[HEADING=2]-Prologue-[/HEADING]

"...and the Hawks made a huge come back in the last quarter. Now back to Lauren."

"Thank you Scott for the latest on sports. That was a real exciting game. Now, the conclusion of our three part investigation on the history of Vampiric Virus and its effect on our society. The pervious two episodes, we talked about the origins of the virus and its outbreak across the nation and how Gaia Pharmaceutical found a cure and created the Parahuman vaccine. Tonight, we find out how Parahumans are integrating in our society and what their future looks like. With us right now is the CEO of WestBrooke Defense Firm, Christopher West to talk on how they are controlling the Vampire population.

"Chris, what exactly is it that WestBrooke do?"

"Lauren, WestBrooke does many things. We provide private security for anyone needing our services, enforce a temporary police force in destabilized areas and take government contracts to...reduce the population of feral vampires."

"When you say reduce the population, you mean "kill them"?"

"If it comes to that, then yes."

"Roy, turn off that asshole will you? Can't stand the voice of that guy."

In a private jet somewhere over the Atlantic ocean, a 32" television was playing while a man and woman were looking over a table of folders. In each of the folders contains possible recruitment for the Angerona Private Contract Firm's newest devision. The jet is currently heading to to an airport in Alaska to transfer to a helicopter to take them to facility near the Alaskan Gulf. An oil rig that has been converted towards Angerona's purpose.

"So, what do you think about the new bloods so far?"

"To be honest, I don't see why the boss man wants to start up this branch. I think that our current devisions can take of these problems our self."

"He isn't paying us to second guess him, Jules. He is paying us to make sure that he can trust them."
Looking at his watch, Roy got up from his seat and stretched his arms out.
"30 minutes till we get there. You remember where I place the sunblock?"

"In the restroom, buddy. Don't want to burn that pretty ass of yours."

With a chuckled, Roy went in the restroom to prepare for the landing and the exposure to the sunlight. Jules' cheery disposition disappeared, and she grabbed a phone out of her coat pocket. After a few button presses and couple rings, a voice answered.

"Mr. Burke, have our guest arrived?
...
Good, make sure they feel at home and we will be there soon."
--
On an old converted oil rig off the coast of Alaska, helicopters have been coming and going nonstop. In these helicopter are potential recruits. They don't know why they are here, but they know that a lot of money is involved. As each of them arrived, they are getting escorted to a lounge room, filled with a working kitchen with staff. They been told to that representatives of the company will be with them soon.

Just go to the lounge and get to know everyone. The time is 5:00 pm and it is getting dark. Any question, just ask them in the user group.

The door slid open, and Tobias stepped out of the helicopter and onto icy helipad outside. He was met by who he presumed to be Angerona employees, and walked with them through the biting wind which ravaged the exposed helipad and made his way towards the sanctuary of a nearby building. The doors were opened before him, and, walking into a pleasantly warm lounge, he took a seat near a window with a view of the evening sunset and removed his coat. Continuing to remain silent, he scanned the environment around him and the Angerona employees in the room. He reached into his satchel and pulled out a magazine, and began to read it.

Marcus stepped out of the chopper after Tobias and entered the room.He scanned it for a seat and sat down, the pumper being an obtrusive and awkward object as usual, making him sit at a painful angle. He pulled a cell phone out of his pocket and called her,he needed hear her voice to get through the day.Poor girl was pretty much stuck with him,and he felt horrible about it.But he needed her,and she needed him. That day had been the worst day of bother their lives, and they wouldn't have made it through without each other Damnation.

She only stick with you because of it,and the fact that your so big because you are a fuck addict.

Fuck you, fuck you in the face until you die of asphyxiation.

The phone went to voice mail and he sighed, she was out on a mission, she always was...

"Hey Mary, give me a ring when you get back honey,I need to hear tyour voice before this mission.Got a feeling it will be like back in 2026."

He hung up,and then immediately felt like a massive dick.Making jokes about the incident that had scarred her for life? What the fuck is wrong with you?.Once again he sighed, and then looked up to the others, waiting for the new arrivals while the pumper sent another massive surge through his body,a good feeling of massive euphoria an energy. It wore off after a couple of seconds, leaving him regretting be willing to keep it on.

You only did that because it makes you feel big and tough, and gives ya pecker a little tingle!

"SHUT THE FUCK UP!"

Nicholas pulled his jacket collar up and hopped out of the helicopter, the harsh winds sent a chill through him. The seas swirled far below and Nicholas felt a little queasy. A pair of men walked briskly up to him and beckoned him to follow them. He followed them across the helipad and into a nearby building, glad to find shelter from the cold. He walked along a hallway to a lounge. He stepped in and quickly scanned the room, two men were already there. He nodded curtly at them and slid into the closest chair.

Tobias peered over the magazine and curiously regarded Marcus, somewhat amused and disturbed by his outburst. None the less, he was reminded of his own daughter somewhere back in England, and he covertly glanced at his PDA to check if she or her uncle had left him any messages. There were none. Tobias buried the slight tinge of disappointment and turned to Nicholas.

'Hey, my name's Tobias, you an Angerona recruit?'

Simon followed the young woman who had collected him from the helicopter. The heavy material of his cloak billowed out slightly behinfd him caught by the airflow from him walking. The woman smelt good, a slight fragance of perfume catching in Simon's nose, shaking his head in a quick jerk he blocked it out. The young lady directed him to enter a lounge and turned away going about her business. Stepping into the room he looked around, there were several like others in the room, he flicked his hand in greeting towards them before heading to stand by the window. Staring out he watched the sea below eluminated by moon.

After the first helicopter emptied it's passengers, and the possible employees made their way in the lounge, a man in a thick black jacket and silver mirror sunglasses was watching them from a platform above them as they made their way inside. As the first helicopter left, as second one was approaching, with a third running behind due to a mechanical problem[footnote]this one is for the latecomers.[/footnote]. Behind him, a man in a helmet that covered his face and a silver combat armor.

An electronic voice within the helmet spoke up.
Code:
"Mr. Burke, the equipment is nearly unloaded. Within a hour, the new guys can be prepared for anything that you throw at them."
"That's good to know. Keep me updated."

With a salute, the armored man left Mr. Burke to watch the second helicopter arrived to unload more hired guns.

The guard unstraped Charlie from his restraints while obviously trying to keep away from his mouth.

"Ah, thank you kindly my man, probably wasn't in my best interest to try and feed on the pilot from 500 feet in the air, yeah?" Charlie chuckled through the shivers that accompanied his blood withdrawal. "So, ah, I was told I'd be given blood here, is that true?"

"I wouldn't know anything about that," the guard said through thinly disguised fear. "You'd have to ask some of the onboard crew."

"I'll be sure to do that," Charlie said dreamily. He could almost see the blood pumping through the young man's circuit of veins. I could get a fix before anyone would even notice.

He quickly snapped out of his stupor once the last of his restraints were undone and he rose on his now wobbly legs. He gave the guard, now on the other side of the helicopter a curt nod of thanks and stumbled out onto the deck of the oil rig.

"Mister Coyne, if you'd like to come with us," one of a pair of heavily armed guards said to him.

"Well, it doesn't seem like I have to much of a choice, does it?" Charles said good naturedly. "Is this where the blood will be? I think I'll pass out if I don't get a damn fix right now!" Charlie said agitatedly to the guard, clearly letting his more rage filled side rise to the surface. Just after he had said this to the guard he felt a sharp pain in his side and blacked out. Those fuckers tazed me

The sunset-sky reflected its rosy complexion across the warbling sea; Marjolaine remained on the heli-pad for some time admiring the sight, having never been out on the open ocean in her life. Her sublime experience was interrupted, however, by the approach of an Angerona employee. The man furrowed his brow in apparent confusion as he glanced between Marjolaine and a clipboard held in his hands, but eventually came to the conclusion that the woman before him, dressed in a full nun's habit, was indeed the recruit "Guillory, M." he'd been sent to escort.

"Miss Guillory, if you will follow me I will lead you to the lounge where you are to await further instructions," he shouted over the din of the busy landing deck.

The nun simply nodded in reply and followed, ignoring the bemused reactions of the ship's staff to her appearance as they made their way inside.

Arriving at the appointed location, Marjolaine scanned briefly over her fellow assembled recruits. She was not accustomed to working with other people and felt somewhat uncomfortable in the tense, competitive military atmosphere; taking a seat she folded her hands in her lap and sat quietly.

Nicholas watched as others entered the lounge, they certainly were a diverse group if anything else. He adjusted the cuff of his jacket before turning and answering one of the group.

"I'm Nicholas and of course, I doubt they let just any Tom, Dick and Harry onto their oil rig."

Nicholas smiled slightly.

Charlie began to stir after he was dragged into the lounge with the others.

"Christ, didn't have to fucking taze me," he muttered, eyes still shut. He opened them slowly so as not to be blinded by the light and found himself in fairly large lounging area, lying on a sofa in the corner of the room. "I see I'm not the only one who was offered the job," he said under his breath.

Charlie proped himself up and felt a sharp pain where the taser met his flesh and fell back into his lying position. "Ah, would one of you folks mind grabbing me something cool and damp, I'm a bit incompacitated here." He turned to his side with the wound up, and waited for a response.

Turning from the window, Simon moved to Charlie. Grabbing a paper towel he dampened it from a pitcher of water. He also poured a glass of water and handed it to the man as he lay on the floor. "Here you go friend" he spoke.

"If you didn't attack our pilot, Mister Coyne, maybe our security detail wouldn't have to subdue you."

Walking in through one of the many doors, a man in a black fleece jacket responded to Charlie's complaint.

"It is going to cost us a fortune to pay for his medical bills, the conversion of his property for Parahuman living, and so on and on. You aren't making a good case for yourself."

Taking off his leather gloves, he maneuvered to the center of the room.

"It appears that the last helicopter is running a little behind, so I'll start things off. My name is Evan Burke, and I'll be your handler for your possible employment for Angerona. That is, if you don't kill your employers. I am sure that you all have questions about why you are all here. Those questions will all be answered soon enough. So, tell me, how was your flight here? My main concern is your comfort."

Marcus regarded the Burke with a large amount cautiousness, before shifting uncomfortably in his chair. The helicopter Journey hand't been ideal, due to being tazed every couple of seconds because of the blood rushes.

"It was fine" Marcus Lied.

"Well, that is good to hear. Oh, Before I forget, for those of you that need a constant supply of blood, we have some IBD's [footnote]Instant blood dispensers[/footnote] available for your use. That way, when you have an urge to drink the blood of your coworkers, you won't." Mr. Burke emphasized that last part while looking right at Charlie.

Instant blood dispensers, or IBD for short, are portable containers of blood for immediate ingestion. Most contain artificial blood, while the more expensive models have real blood. The ones Angerona has are expensive. They come in many models, some are needles, while others are similar to asthma inhalers of late twenty century

"If there aren't any immediate concerns, your commanders while in the field will be here soon enough. With them here, we can get see if you are al suitable for the job."

Nicholas listened intently to the newcomer, he could tell the man had made this speech, or one very similar, several time before. he nodded as he finished, satisfied with what Burke had said. Nicholas again observed the other recruits, a few were parahumans. He tried not to be prejudiced but when a couple of them had been tazed to prevent incident it made him uneasy.

"Well, if you would kindly point me to one of this blood dispensers, I'll be out of your way Mister Burke." Charlies said while rising to his feet, the wet towel pressed against the burn from the taser. "Also, I don't think any of us have exactly been told why we're need, I get that you probably don't know everything, being a peon and all, but you gotta no the basics, right?"
