"How?"

"Well, it's complicated," Acolyte replied. "Monks spend their entire lives trying to find enlightenment. But the first thing you need to do is empty your mind. That's what meditation is." He gestured to the ground where he'd been sitting. "You empty your mind, and make everything still. Then when you can do that, you'll reach a point, an actual scientific phenomenon called the 'Theta State'. It's hard to explain what it is, and how it works, but the practical value is that it... lowers walls in your mind. You make connections easily, and see things from a perspective unclouded by emotional baggage. When you're in that state of mind, the answers to your problems come much more easily."

Sitting back down on the ground, he gestured for Nikolai to join him. "It'll take a lot of practice, but you could learn to do it, if you want. Lucia isn't there yet, but it still helps her relax. And honestly, relaxation is what we all need right now."

Nikolai kept listening to what the other man had to say, and what he understood caused his frown to lessen, if only slightly. Nikolai had lived as a creature of action. Always when he'd been obstructed, physically or otherwise, his instinct was to do something about it. Could it really be that the answer now lay in just... sitting down?

There was no harm in trying, he supposed.

Nikolai went and sat in the same spot that Acolyte had been in before, and made a passable mimicry of the other man's posture. He closed his eyes, slowed his breathing, and did his best to relax and clear his mind...

Minutes later, Nikolai's face was screwed up and flushed red in concentration, as he tried to force the thoughts out of his head. He wasn't making much progress. Opening one eye, Nikolai peered sceptically at Acolyte.

"Should something have happened by now?" he grumbled.

"You'd think after the world had nuked itself five times over we'd have gotten over the grudges of the old world."

"There is no human instinct so stubborn as hate." The Talon replied sadly "I should know, having excised it from myself. However, we have not long now Nahla. When we are through, the world will live in a single, ultimate unity. No longer shall the fissures in ourselves wound the world beneath our feet; and in time, those wounds will heal."

"Let's take a big vacation after all this. Enjoy the beautiful world we liberated. How's that sound?"

"I would like that." The Talon lied easily, before growing a mischievous smile. "Will it be just us girls, or do you have others in mind who might join us?" At this, she looked pointedly over to where Riley and Dietrich were squaring up to each-other.

Acolyte watched Nikolai sit in silence, with his eyes closed. Though the other man stuck at it for a good several minutes, Acolyte could tell that his mind snapped back into action in the first couple of minutes, or so. You could tell by certain signs that he was thinking of something. His eyes moving below their lids, or the changing of the sound of his breathing. Acolyte thought about pointing these things out, to shepherd Nikolai back into internal silence, as the elders had sometimes done. But he decided it was important to see how far Nikolai could get on his own.

"Should something have happened by now?"

Acolyte shrugged. "You won't get it on the first try. Learning to clear your mind takes time and effort, like any other skill. Like carving. That's also pretty relaxing, by the way."

===============================

Riley looked up when he noticed the two women looking at him. Talon was giving him an apparent girlish smile. He smiled back. When he glanced at Nahla, the smile became a little more genuine, as he began thinking about the previous night, when she had come over and made a line about being cold, although the night was pleasantly warm.

Again, he wondered what they were talking about.

"To still having something to lose." Selina replied, raising her own glass high. Abigail thought about that for a few moments before meeting her glass with Selina's, with the pair of them downing their drinks at roughly the same time as one another. The rum had a smooth and slightly spicy taste to it, along with hints of vanilla and even a bit of caramel to the mixture, all in all a pretty decent drink.

"Well the Captain makes a decent rum I reckon, it had some nice flavour to it." Abigail remarked with a smile as she looked at the back of the bottle before putting it back down on the counter.

"So, what's the plan now?" She then asked, her mood having back down to earth a bit.

"Good afternoon, men." Hammond said, in a tone that made it clear that he wished nothing of the sort upon them. "It's past time for your debrief."

Ah, splitting headaches, itchy sheets, crappy lighting and henched up septic frowning at him from the foot of the bed. Just like the time Barrows went to Thailand. Oh to be back in Bangkok and enjoying the warm sun and the white sand beaches. And those lady boys! They could confuse a man and make him not even care! But the oft neglected pros of Asian transsexuals would have to wait. He had red tape and a maze full of mad convicts kung-fu convicts to handle.

"Well we found who was hitting our boys." He sat up through the dull ache in his chest. "Bunch of inmates and not run of the mill ones either, these lads knew how to handle themselves. I mean military crossed with circus shit." The amount the Chinese lad had jumped around, Christ it was like he had ants in his pants.

"Only two of them on hand to show their faces. An Asian lad with some fancy feet and pretty well done ink." What he saw of it anyway. "And a bruiser, biggest one I seen since we got here. Pretty tanned for this place, pretty hard to nail down where he might be from but I'd know his face again easy enough. Bruce Lee took this one down in no time flat." He nodded his head over to Travis in his prone state. "I managed to beat him back a bit but his friend wasn't having any." Barrows gave an irritated grumble as he rustled his shoulders trying to get comfy. "Can't say if they're working just the two of them, my gut says no but what does he know? I had a look over some of the profiles but Charlie moved around too fast to get a good look at his face, an by the time he did he was pretty bruised up. Other fella did things straight though. I managed to narrow them down a bit anyway. These ones are the real deal here, Maj. Old guard were up to something big to have this kind of muscle in their pocket."

He grimaced, all this running around in the shadows was no good for Barrows or his usual sunshine demeanor.

Hammond listened to Barrows' recounting of events with interest, the frown on his face more to do with the effort of deciphering his subordinate's heavy colloquialisms than with annoyance of frustration. True, it might be unusual to call the discovery of organised resistance against his forces, long after the previous hierarchy had been dismantled 'good' news. However, it seemed that Barrows and Travis together had struck gold, long before he'd even been planning to send them panning for it. If these people didn't possess Lee's countermeasure, then they were at least a significant step along the path to tracking it down... and now he had their faces. With faces, Hammond could get names; and with names, he could get leverage.

"I see." Hammond said once Barrows had finished his tale. "It takes more than the common or garden convict to best you, I would imagine. I'll make a point of warning our forces not to engage with less than overwhelming force if and when these two resurface. Hopefully, when they do, they won't be bringing too many friends with them."

Relaxing his stance a little, the General moved round to the side of Barrows' bed.

"How soon can you be back on your feet?" He asked, glancing a little disdainfully at the unconscious form of Travis as he did so.

===========================================================================================================================

"So, what's the plan now?"

"We keep waiting." Selena replied, smacking her lips from the rum. Keeping up appearances was one thing, but that really had to be her last drink for the day. "Our new friends will be creating the biggest, noisiest distraction they possibly can to cover the escape. If all goes to plan, then we'll know when it's time to move."

=========================================================================================================================

"You won't get it on the first try. Learning to clear your mind takes time and effort, like any other skill. Like carving. That's also pretty relaxing, by the way."

Nikolai responded with a non-committal grunt. inwardly, he appreciated Acolyte's suggestion. However, between learning to read and write, and now this 'meditation' business, he doubted that turning bits of wood into smaller bits of wood would be high on his list of priorities for a while.

Returning to the meditation, Nikolai stuck at it for another fifteen minutes, with no tangible success. It seemed that, the more he tried not to think, the more his brain wanted to do just that; and, in all honesty, Nikolai couldn't help but be on his brain's side on this one. If meditation was all about sitting down and doing nothing, then what else was he supposed to do but think?!

"They said their village was up over this hill! Come on!"

"Bet those freaks are hoarding all sorts of loot. How else do you get by around here? They can blow all that pious bullshit out their ass! Load a crap, it has to be!

"Well, here's hoping the No Violence part is true. I'll head back out to see when I wanna work for my pay. This 'ere's a free lunch..."

"Yeah well, Pacifist or not, I don't reckon there's any use in leaving any of them behind. We'll take the ones who'll fetch a good price, and burn the rest in their barns."

In the early morning silence, Nikolai overheard every word spoken by the armed posse, as they passed by a few hundred yards from the shack that they must have thought was still abandoned, or else they would have taken care to keep their voices lower. Nikolai couldn't tell haw many of them there were, however, or what weapons they carried, and so he stayed still, and silent, letting them pass, before he turned to Acolyte. He didn't need to ask if the other man had heard it too.

'They are going to hurt Judah.'

Nikolai leapt to his feet and stormed back toward the barn where the others were sleeping. The side door almost fell off it's rusted hinges, he opened it with such force.

"Everyone get up!" He announced with a low boom, as he strode threw the throng of sleeping mats, looking for his weapons.

Heading into the barn on Nikolai's heels, Acolyte made a beeline for his pack, propped against a wall to one side. Rifling through his assortment of books and spare clothes, he eventually pulled out the 9mm Beretta that the Songbirds had allowed him to keep, as well as two clips. Putting one in his jeans pocket, Acolyte slotted the other into the sidearm. If it became a ranged fight, he'd need the firearm. If they got close, however, he'd need no other weapon but himself.

Gun in hand, he sprinted through the door, towards the settlement.

"Will it be just us girls, or do you have others in mind who might join us?"

Nahla followed the Talon's gaze and scoffed at her implication. "Are you kidding me? They'd only spoil the fun!"

Her eyes lingered on Riley for a time. "Besides," she said, looking back at her leader. "I'm surprised that one can even walk after last night!" She laughed menacingly. "I wouldn't count on him to keep up with us."

What made this woman so easy to speak to? Surely Nahla's knowledge of her 'hobbies' shook her to her core, but somehow, when she was actually talking to the woman, she could forget all about that. When it was just the two of them, Nahla felt... safe. Like she could tell this woman anything and everything.

"So," Nahla began suddenly, "how have things been on your end? Riley updated me well enough, but he didn't give me a clear picture of how you were doing. I don't imagine all this excitement's given you a moment of rest."

*****************************************************************************************************************************************************

Lucia perked up at the talk of impending violence, abandoning her innocent charade without a second thought. "Nikolai!" she called out, be he was already gone. By the time Lucia had fished her glock out of her backpack, Acolyte was already out the door as well. While the others had left their gear elsewhere, Lucia was far too paranoid to stray too far from her weapon. It turned out, in this case, she'd made the right decision.

Still, she followed after her friends.

She should have been scared, but instead Lucia felt a strange sense of... excitement. Her blood boiling and her heart pounding, she stumbled in the dark and through the doors behind her comrades.

"Everyone get up!"

Realizing there was little she could do inside, Lucia stepped back out through the doors and scanned the the vast darkness. "Dammit," she muttered, "I can't see shit out here." She whispered through the door. "Hurry up in there!"

"How soon can you be back on your feet?"

"You kidding me?" Barrows scoffed. "I'd be up now if the medics wouldn't keep latching on my heel like a bunch of fucking ducks at their mum."

Though wasn't it just his luck that just as he was getting the chance to leave unmolested the damn mattress actually started feeling half comfortable. Bloody typical.

"I do not appreciate a bunch of failed thieves and nonces running around thinking they got the better of me, Hammers."

"I do not appreciate a bunch of failed thieves and nonces running around thinking they got the better of me, Hammers."

General Hammond smiled at that. While he had never quite reconciled Barrows' individualistic and unorthodox style with his command, Hammond couldn't help but (only a little grudgingly) respect the man's passion and dedication to his work.

"Well then..." he replied "I'd say it's time we showed our enemies that their victory was a hollow one, and that it takes more than they could throw at us to keep us down. There's little we can do until I've gathered some more intel on your assailants. However, in the mean time, I want you to get back down there and knock some heads. It shouldn't be too long until somebody gives you an excuse. With any luck, you may even run into someone who knows something useful."

===========================================================================================================================

"I don't imagine all this excitement's given you a moment of rest."

"Indeed." The Talon replied, savouring the word like it was a particularly juicy morsel of something sweet. "For so many years, days like these were only a vision, a dream I just knew would come true, but that was waiting for me far away, and that I must take step after agonising step to reach. At times, I often felt like I was back in the jungle, machete in one hand, and nothing but a bleeding, rancid stump for the other, desperately hacking my way through the ferns and vines in search of a trickle of clean water along the ground, or the faint glimpse of sunlight through the canopy..."

The Talon's eyes had misted over as she reminisced. Returning to the present, she held her metal arm in front of her face, and stretched its elongated, bladed fingers. With her other hand, she tightened her grip around Nahla's shoulder ever so slightly.

"Now, these long-awaited days pass so quickly I struggle to keep up. It leaves me almost no time to stop and take in the magnitude of what it's all working towards. Of course, I manage. It's a strange thing to realise, but lately I have been thinking... In all of this, to bring about a world free of the tyrants that have been desiccating it's body since the cataclysm, I have only needed to do exactly what they wanted me to do, what they created me to do, all the while. Call it irony if you will, or simply call our enemies fools, but I can't help but see it as something more."

Turning her head to the side, The Talon's eyes bore deep into the other woman's, fixing her in a trance.

"Do you believe in fate, Nahla? Is it absurd to you that. while we may appear to make our own choices from one moment to the next, that we are guided by a shared voice, speaking to all of us in a voice we cannot hear, but must obey, that hands us all our roles in driving the engine of constant change, the masterpiece of cosmic forces beyond our comprehension?"

Before Nahla had time to answer, the air was filled with the sound of another convoy entering the market square. They drove unmarked trucks and technicals similar to those of The Songbirds. Before all said vehicles had quite come to a halt, men with Kalashnikovs were dismounting by the dozen. Some wore black or camo-patterned cargo dress, while some others wore white, ankle length robes, after the more local attire. They all obscured their faces with patterned, colourful head scarves, sometimes also with dark glasses... and all of them were men.

"Our first visitors." The Talon announced happily, unfazed by how these new arrivals were spreading out across the square as she spoke, the townspeople outright fleeing in fear of them. "Stay close." she whispered to Nahla, as the rest of her most exemplary fighters and operatives all began falling in behind her.

=========================================================================================================================

With everyone awake and armed, Nikolai and the others stalked their prey through the morning mist. They were still too close to the town below to start a firefight. Not to mention, they still couldn't get close enough to properly gauge the strength of their foe. So the followed the sound of the bandit's idle chatter at a distance, cutting through fields of tall crops and long grasses, rather than walking out onto the winding, dirt road.

Nikolai, for his own part, was taking no chances. Armed to the teeth, he cradled a PKM light machine-gun, it's considerable bulk not really done justice in his enormous hands, and with bandoleers full of rounds slung across both shoulders. Strapped across the small of his back, was an M-500 pump-action shotgun for close encounters, with two M1911s holstered under his arms as a back-up. As a final touch, a two-handed sledgehammer hung from his waist. If nothing else, being seen with more lethal weapons about his person than anyone had any business carrying at once, would hopefully make any pirate think twice before picking s fight with him. If that didn't work, then Nikolai would make sure each and every one came in handy.

The compound where Judah had her home bordered on the rainforest that still smothered much of the inland areas of the island, a camp bordered by high wooden barricades, with an area of several square miles inside its perimeter. What Nikolai had no clue to, looking from the outside, was what these people had inside of there, and there wasn't time to daydream now. He had more pressing concerns...

"I'm afraid I can't allow you inside. Not unless you agree to relinquish all of your weapons, and vow to do no harm to any who live here."

"Lady, I don't think you understand. We're not taking no for an answer."

The posse of scum that was currently harassing the gate numbered at around 20. All of them were armed, and many were swigging clumsily from liquor bottles. Standing in their way was one woman. She was tall, straight backed and slender, wearing a simple, knee-length white dress and a black belt, which matched the long, straight hair flowing down her back. She had a pale, elegant face, with a high forehead, long nose and prominent cheekbones. Beyond that, Nikolai could make out no more detail at this distance. Not through the gloom at any rate. What he did take note of, however, is that she stood before these dangerous men, unarmed and with her arms down by her sides, looking and sounding for all the world like they were no more of a threat to her than a litter of pups.

"Last chance *****..." said the spokesperson and apparent leader of the posse "It's time to step aside."

"My name is Christa, and I don't believe killing me would be worth your while."

"Well then, just walk away, and make this easier on everyone." the ring leader snarled, before lashing out with a backhanded slap to her face. The woman flinched from the blow, but she did not stagger or fall.

"Enough!" Nikolai roared, tearing his way out into the clearing, the other Free Men hot on his heels, and his metal leg making a dull, pulpy thud against the soil with every other step.

"Hey!" the pirate responded, wheeling round and levelling his gun at them. As Nikolai continued his advance, unperturbed, the other man looked him up and down with some trepidation. "Ain't none of this your business. Who are you?

Stopping just a couple of yards away from the man, Nikolai looked down at him with w mean smile and a fierce glint in his eye.

"I'm someone your own size."

"No martyrs, we don't have enough people on our side for that. Understood?"

"Crystal." The both of them said before looking to their gear and loading up but it was relatively light considering their lack of a many materials. Aggie took upon herself to load up on some medicine and food while Lewis used an old bag to store as much ammunition as possible. They put everything in order and shifted things around until Aggie found her bottle.

"I guess now is better than never..." Aggie said as she popped open the bottle of alcohol. She took a swig before wincing and coughing. Lewis went to her side before she waved him off. "It's the booze, it's the booze." Aggie hacked. Lewis couldn't help but smile.

"That's enough," Lewis said, taking the bottle away from Aggie before looking to the others. "Anybody else? No time like the present."

"-With any luck, you may even run into someone who knows something useful."

Barrows lifted himself from the bed with ease and cricked the aching muscles and stiff neck. Whether it was the fading remains of his blasted beating or the doing of that lice infested, brick that he'd been confined to didn't matter. He wouldn't be lying down again for a long time.

"With pleasure." Barrows allowed himself a small smirk and gathered up what few things he had in the infirmary and slung his jacket over his shoulder. "Back into the depths I go!" He called over his shoulder to Hammond.

Sauntering down the hallway Barrows' mind filled with all the various thoughts of fun,excitement and brutality that had gone unrequited while he'd been laid up. This place and the human droppings that called it home had been rather unwelcoming to him, it was time he repaid the favor. First he'd stop by the barracks, pick up some supplies. Then he'd go pay some social calls. The people of the pit were no doubt worried about him.

Nahla did indeed believe. Even if she hadn't, she'd have found it hard to tell the Talon otherwise. Her survival in the desert all those lonely, cold nights after she escaped her ruined home? What else but fate could have allowed for that to happen?

Even still, a single all-knowing God was not something she could put her faith in. No, too many had died over such simple-mindedness.

Before she could articulate her answer, company had arrived. Instinctively, Nahla's fingers found the grip of her her sidearm.

"Stay close."

Nahla nodded, not moving an inch from where she stood. At a moment's notice she'd be ready to spring into action. A small part of her longed for things to go wrong. It had been far too long since she'd fought alongside her leader.

Lucia was crouched between Nikolai and Acolyte, struggling to hear the discussion ahead. As soon as the woman barring their path had been slapped, Lucia looked wide-eyed at the big man beside her.

They shouldn't have done that.

"Enough!"

Hot on his heels, Lucia sprung out into the open, her pistol leveled at one of the pirates. Were they drunk?

The young firebrand couldn't help but chuckle when she took in the rabble's horror.

"I'm someone your own size."

"You boys should move on," Lucia suggested. "My friend here's been itching to wet his whistle and I reckon a few of you have big enough eye sockets for him to fit his meat into. He gets a bit excited sometimes, so you might want to leave like... ten seconds ago."

Acolyte nodded. "There's no need to waste life tonight. I hope you have the sense to turn back and return wherever you came from. If not, I think you're on the verge of true stupidity." Although his tone was polite, the Beretta aimed squarely at the apparent leader's head was less so.

Their new friends were representatives of the Liberation of True Islamic Peoples organisation, a radical militia that (narrowly) held the territory that they were standing in. One of dozens of rival militias that had been squabbling over patches if desert like this, since the power vacuum left in the wake of the Pan-Arabian War, egged on by the Tiger Republics (and by proxy, the Shao-Long Conglomerate), who could continue their extraction operations in this area uncontested, so long as all the factions that opposed them were busy fighting each-other. Their leader was a lean, tall man, with a CZ Skorpion machine pistol hanging off his hip. Although his features were almost entirely obscured, it wasn't hard for The Talon to tell from his body language that he wasn't pleased.

["You are The Talon, yes?"] The man rasped in the local tongue, doing a cursory double-take at her lethal prosthesis.

["I am."] The Talon's reply was flawless. ["This is Nahla. Nahla, allow me to introduce you to Huresh Ibh-Sid Al'Khadir, leader of all LTIP forces in this province."]

Huresh looked at Nahla like she was something nasty stuck on the sole of his boot, before turning back to address The Talon.

["You and any women with you were instructed to cover your heads for this negotiation."]

["We did."] The Talon replied, pointing at the second-hand berets her and Nahla both sported.

["This is not sufficient!"] Huresh spat. ["You arrive before your hosts, unannounced, armed and in force. Now, you insult our customs to our faces! You think we will stand for this?"]

["You have no choice but to."] The Talon was cold and confident in her answer, standing off from Huresh in a relaxed, yet solid, posture. ["When your organisation invites mine to a parley, your dress code will be dominant. Today, we will be entertaining my customs."]

["We have been well-informed of your 'customs'...] Huresh shot back. His next cursory glance at her metal arm masked some apprehension behind its disgust. [You think you can 'invite' us to our own land? We are hear because no negotiations can take place here without our consent. We have made grievous concessions to you already by even allowing you and your friend here to walk in this place unsupervised. Now, you try our patience."]

["You are here because inviting you was narrowly within the limits of my courtesy, and you've been trying my patience since the moment you arrived!"] The Talon's eyes were dangerous and she squared up to Huresh. Though he was a tall man, the were of a height. ["Your earlier observation was prudent. We were here before you. We came with more guns, and all the time we've been talking, my forces have been lining up shots. Your sovereignty here means nothing to me. I could kill you now, and any of your men that saw fit to object, would be dead before their fingers touched their triggers. When the representatives from the Arab Protectorate and Helios Industries arrive, they will out gun you as well. I made sure of it."]

Huresh bristled, and made a sound halfway between a snorting bull and a strangled cat. However, he made no retort.

["You have two options..."] The Talon continued ["You can be gracious, and silent, hosts, and myself and my allies may even let you share in our spoils; or, this can come to blood, and you will find out just how little your co-operation was ever worth to me."]

Huresh's resistance didn't last long after that. A few more seconds of angry staring, and then he visibly buckled.

["Stand down."] He grumbled to his men, before brushing passed Nahla in search of somewhere to sulk. The Talon simply smiled, until all his forces had dissipated.

"That went well." she said, turning and winking at Nahla.

=========================================================================================================================

"Anybody else? No time like the present."

Yu shook his head.

"I'd rather keep my head clear for the next few hours. Come on, let's not waste any more time..."

An hour later...

Yu sat huddled in another foxhole in the Lower Levels... waiting. If Chen's approach was going to work, Yu would require no radio contact to know when the time was right to move. Still, it was irritating just sitting here with no contact with the other group, not knowing how they were doing.

=========================================================================================================================

"Okay, that's the last one." Chen whispered, as he secured the plastic explosive in place around the safety valve.

'And the last of our C4 too. Let's just hope we don't need any more for emergencies...'

With the Kill-Switch active, remote-detonation via radio signal was impossible, and so Chen carefully inserted the time-detonator into the last charge, and adjusting the clock for a countdown of ten minutes. Taking a breath, mentally committing himself for the last time to this course of action, he started the countdown.

"That should be enough time to go crank up the furnace and then get somewhere far away and with a good view." he said, clambering swiftly down to where the others were waiting for him.

=========================================================================================================================

From this close, Nikolai could see the dilemma written all over the ringleader's face. He didn't want to throw down with this lot, these crazies who'd decided to stick their nose in to help out the freaks that lived in the Sanctuary. They looked like tough fuckers almost to a man, and they were carrying a lot of guns. On the other hand, he couldn't go back down to the port, after advertising his intention to go and rob a bunch of defenceless villagers, and then come back empty handed. He'd never recruit a single crewman on the island again. Behind his stony visage, however, Nikolai nursed his own doubts. These men were nothing compared to some creatures who hadn't even been worthy of that name underground. On the other hand, the Free Men were outnumbered. They could win this fight, but not without casualties. Nikolai had lost enough of his companions already...

"I ask that you all please put your weapons down." Christa's voice was calm yet sharp. "Violence is forbidden within the camp."

When Nikolai looked at her, something about her face sent a shiver up Nikolai's spine. There was nothing wrong with her face, even with a new made cut swelling across her cheek. It just gave him a bad feeling, that he couldn't quite place; and, if he was not imagining it, something in her expression faltered as well, when he turned to look at her. She didn't seem to want to meet his eye.

"Are we inside the camp now?" Nikolai asked with a small smile on his face. To his surprise, Christa smiled back.

"I suppose you are not."

The ringleader of the pirate gang, who had been in the middle of some sort of retort, did not take kindly to being ignored. He clapped a hand on Nikolai's shoulder as if to wheel him back around.

"Hey! Look at me when I'm talking to you fu-AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHH!"

Nikolai had been ready to tear the man's arm out of his socket. However, he had not been quick enough. There was a loud, whiplike crack, and a gust of hot air streaking down past Nikolai's face, and the man's wrist had exploded into a gout of blood and splintered bone. The ringleader's hand still clung stiffly to Nikolai's shoulder, while the rest of him was now on the floor whimpering, cradling his bleeding stump.

Nikolai smiled. He'd know the sound of that rifle shot from anywhere.

'Natalia.'

It was as good a shot as he'd ever seen her make. She must have used the commotion he had caused to go and get a vantage point in the forest, in case things turned ugly.

Peeling the hand off his shoulder, and dropping it on top of the rest of the pathetic mess that now writhed at his feet, Nikolai turned to the now terrified pack of thugs, far less confident in their numerical superiority than they'd been a second ago.

"Anyone else?" he asked gruffly.

Nahla caught their leader in her periphery as he trudged past her. What she'd give to bury a knife in his chest.

"That went well."

The old warrior shrugged. "As well as could be expected from this lot," she told her. "How much longer are we going to have to deal with these scum? You know the very sight of them makes my skin crawl." She had to consciously keep her hand away from her sidearm.

She had an unnatural urge to kill men like Huresh on sight.

"That should be enough time to go crank up the furnace and then get somewhere far away and with a good view."

"I guess I'll look for a good spot to make a nest," Neil told the others. "Have any place in mind?" He asked Chen.

Lucia nearly jumped out of her skin when Natalia's rifle went off. The echo from the shot hung in the air for an uncomfortably long time.

"Anyone else?"

After gathering her nerves, Lucia grinned. "Please say yes," she cooed, her pistol still trained on the man closest to Christa. "Maybe if you all attack I'll get a chance to claim one of your heads before our snipers mop it up." They didn't have to know Natalia was their only 'sniper', not after the message she'd just sent them.

"That should be enough time to go crank up the furnace and then get somewhere far away and with a good view."

Korovitch remained impassive as they set off. He hoped once the furnace was dealt with, he would have a chance to slip away for a few minutes. There was something that needed investigating...

Riley watched Nahla, noticing how she tensed at the presence of the men they were meeting. She'd told him bits and pieces about her past, and he had some vague notion of what might be going through her head. Still, he resolved to talk to her about it, later.

"Now I want you boys to know... this isn't a race thing."

Barrows looked over the aftermath of his latest inquiry. Apparently the denizens of the pit weren't the sharing types who cared to spill the beans on a murderous circus troupe. Who'd have thought it?

"Like, you're a multiracial gang, I respect that I really do. I can only imagine how tough that kind of thing has to be in a prison environment what with the Nazis and the Zulus and what not. Y'know that's gotta take guts to run in all the colours of the rainbow and it's a good move. Bring in a lot of different skills and experiences, I love it!" A pity their skills and experiences were shit. "So how bout we get to talking? Seeing as we got all the nasty stuff out of the way."

One of the gathered prisoners (ex-prisoners, he had to keep reminding himself) made a dash to move. "Eh, eh, eh..." Barrows tutted at him, pointing his pistol towards their gut. The poor sod scowled and slumped back into line with his other, more injured, buddies. Most were nursing head injuries or some broken bone or another.

"Now I'll ask again!" Barrows' tone got a lot more serious as he shifted his weight on the bastard that was lying at his feet, one of his arms trapped in Barrows' grip and being twisted in a direction it wasn't supposed to. "Jimmy, can you tell me anything a bout the gentlemen I described to you earlier?"

The guy's name was not Jimmy and he didn't have much information to give. But he was quickly running out of fingers to be broken. Barrows knew he probably wouldn't get anything out of them, just like the other outfits he'd hit but like the boss man said, send a message. So the time passed and fucked up more people's skeletons, working his way deeper into the pit itself. Feeling like a predator in his bleak jungle and loving it. Today was shaping up okay so far. everything was coming up Barrows.

"How much longer are we going to have to deal with these scum? You know the very sight of them makes my skin crawl."

"There presence here is necessary." The Talon explained calmly, as they turned and headed back towards the compound, her hawkish gaze ensuring that none of the LTIP fighters had loitered within earshot. "While our strength dwarfs their's, fighting them here would draw the attention of larger forces to our movements. They may even see fit to leak intelligence to our shared enemies if we offend them too grievously. So, we will accommodate them... for now."

Halting their progress, The Talon turned so that she and Nahla were facing each-other, a ring of steel surrounding them, and placed her still-flesh hand reassuringly on the other woman's shoulder, smiling.

"Don't worry, Huresh is all bluster. You saw how easily I shouted him down back there, and you of all people should know that I was barely even trying. He will start by testing where our boundaries lie, but he won't ever dare cross them. Besides, greed motivated him to come here more than indignation. He's hoping that we'll see fit to share our more lucrative connections with him, bolstering LTIP's profile alongside ours. Between you and me..." The Talon's grin was that of a mischievous child, divulging to a friend upon who's seat she had planted a pin. "once our business here is concluded, what they will have been made privy to is a loose end I'd rather not leave hanging."

===========================================================================================================================

"Have any place in mind?"

"I though I'd leave that to you." Chen replied "Find us a good place to hide that won't get us cornered. Felix and I will crank up the heat then come join you. You two..." Chen gestured to Luka and Fiona "Do a sweep for anyone loitering around the area and clear as many of them out as you can. Don't tell them what's happening, just say or do whatever it takes to get them out. We're not here to blow up innocent bystanders. Oh, and everyone!" he tapped his wrist for emphasis. "The clock's ticking. Don't forget."

Nine and a half minutes later...

'Where the fuck's Iron Squad?!'

Chen and Felix had made the rendezvous with Neil in good time, after having done their best to turn the heat in the Industrial Complex back up to peak production levels, and sticking it there. It wouldn't take long before the occupiers noted the anomaly and investigated. However, unless they could complete said investigation in the next few seconds, they'd have a hell of a lot more to think about. As the seconds ticked down, however, Luka and Fiona were nowhere to be seen. If he and the rest were going to have to go and wade back into the thick of it to find them, Chen was not going to be happy.

In almost perfect synchronisation with the countdown Chen had been running in his head, the explosives detonated, shearing through the safety valves meant to direct heat and harmful gases away from the mid-levels when the refineries were producing at maximum. The consequences were almost instantaneous. The whole Mid-Levels seemed to rumble, as explosions chained through several of the production levels, and others were flooded with hot steam and other fumes. Hunched against the wall, Chen steepled his hands under his chin, as alarms began blaring all throughout RACDI-Alpha. Now there really was no going back.

'Make it count Yu.'

=========================================================================================================================

The explosions even made the Lower Levels tremble, and those waiting indie the foxhole were showered with dust and pebbled from the ceiling. There was a second's pause, as Yu said a silent goodbye to his brother, and to the hell hole that he'd nonetheless called home for over a year, before getting to his feet and picking up his rifle.

"We all know the objective." He said simply "Let's not waste any time."

=========================================================================================================================

In the Gates of Pandemonium, Selena and Abi felt the rumble beneath their feet. A second later, the tense atmosphere was shattered by the blaring of alarms, and the occupying troops were piling out of the door, to find out what was happening and to receive their orders.

Selena met Abi's eyes, and the message was clear.

'Time to go.'

=========================================================================================================================

There were many curses, but few complete sentences, in the aftermath of the shot. With a mean smile, Nikolai slowly began advancing towards the group, stepping over the still whimpering form of their leader as he did so.

"H-Hey! Stay the f-fuck back man!" One of the others spoke up, his own hands trembling around the shotgun he cradled at his hip.

"You really going to die, for whatever you think they're hiding in there?" Nikolai asked, not slowing his stride.

"Fuck!" The other man swore "Just what the hell are you doing defending them anyway?!"

"Just because a Dog can pick up a stick, it doesn't make him a man." Nikolai explained, motioning to the shotgun that was now quickly wilting at the other's side. He was towering over the other man now.

"Piece of shit!" the other continued, in one last, vain attempt to save face. "Easy for you to act tough, with snipers watching your a-"

"Bark, bark, little Dog..." Nikolai said, almost lazily, as he sank his hand into the other man's mouth, breaking half of his teeth and taking a firm grip of his tongue. The man's tirade was replaced with muffled screams and distressed gurgles, as he was forced to swallow his own blood. From here, in would be the easiest thing for Nikolai to rip his tongue out, crush his lower jaw, or simply snap his neck. He though about doing all those things, and a few short months ago, he would has done so without hesitation. However, after a few more seconds, Nikolai released the pirate without further harm, who promptly sank to his knees in defeat, sobbing and clutching the lower half of his face.

"Pick up what's left of your friends, leave, and don't come back." Nikolai told the others. An order that was promptly obeyed.

"Thank you." Christa piped up behind him "We normally do some light trade with the larger groups down in the port, to ensure our place here is preserved peacefully. However, you can never quite account for what ideas some men will get into their heads after a bottle of rum."

Nikolai gave a non-committal grunt of reply. There was something about Christa that... bothered him. She almost certainly would have died, had she refused to defend herself and had Nikolai and the others not arrived on the scene, and yet she appeared completely unfazed. It was something more than that though. These people claimed to be non-violent, and Christa had demonstrated such even after a hand had been raised to her first. However, growing up in The Pit, Nikolai had developed an affinity for people who could radiate danger without seeming to do anything. This was a woman who was more than comfortable around violence. In fact, she flourished in it.

"I am Christa." she continued, seemingly requiring no more input from him. "I am a citizen of this Sanctuary; and you, I take it, are Nikolai."

Nikolai tensed, his blood running cold. A more extreme reaction than he might otherwise have had, but this woman was making the hairs stand up on the back of his neck; and he still couldn't quite look her in the eye, for some reason.

"How do you know my name?" he asked, warily.

"Subira, Manyara, and Judah all spoke of you upon their return yesterday." Christa replied with a smile. "It would seem the debts we owe you are already piling up. Also, as I understand it, you are looking for somewhere to stay? Well, if you could bring yourself to leave all of those weapons behind, we should have room for all of you. Life may be simple here, but it is also more comfortable than I expect you're used to. Rest assured, staying here places no obligation on you unless you wish it to. We are the ones in your debt, and to me, that makes you honoured guests for some time yet."

Nikolai really wasn't sure about this. Even if he didn't have a bad feeling about Christa, they had no idea what was behind those timber gates, and Nikolai had never in his life gone into new territory unarmed! On the other hand... they'd come such a long way, and left so much behind, in hope of finally finding somewhere where they might all lay their heads in peace. Even as their leader, did Nikolai have any right to deny this chance to those that had followed him here? It wasn't as if he had anything concrete to persuade them not to. Besides, Judah lived here, maybe it wasn't all bad?

And so, it was Nikolai who, cautiously, looked around at the others, in search of some direction from them.

The Gates of Pandemonium were as busy as ever, Selina remained at the bar, though now she had taken to drinking water, hopefully it would clear her head for what was to come after the copious amounts of alcohol. Both Abigail and Selina were talking amongst themselves, when a mighty rumble could be felt beneath her feet, followed by what sounded like some small explosion.

'Christ, Chen and that lot must have started.' Abigail pondered as she instinctively went prone behind the counter. After a few moments, Abigail rose up and saw that the occupying troops were already piling out the door, she then looked at Selina, and noticed that look in her eyes that told Abigail, that now was the time to move, and nodded in response.

Gesturing to Zach to get downstairs ready, Abigail followed soon after, grabbing her coat from the nearby rack, then signalled to Selina to move, hoping the commotion outside would distract the soldiers long enough.
