"Mark!"

Lewis fired a short burst from his submachine gun at the target. He couldn't rely on the bullet's small caliber to bring down the soldier lined up so he let loose a short burst resulting in the man being peppered with bullets before crumpling down into the ground. Lewis peeked up from his sights, seeing the dead guard and other guards being disposed of in quick succession.

"Target down." Lewis whispered to the others.

Aggie was in the rear with Selena but she took a peak at their vehicles only to see quad bikes instead of trucks of tanks.

"Why did it have to be bikes..." Aggie mumbled as she watched the rear in case any soldiers were coming up where they came from. With the amount of racket downstairs, that seemed unlikely.

"I haven't had time to fill them in. But I do know they picked through that ammo cache after Fiona and I were done with it. They've stored it in one of the derelict shafts from years back. It should be safe until we need it."

Neil did his best not make eye contact with any of Korovitch's men. Under different circumstances they'd be flaying him alive right now. Looking to Chen, Neil squared his shoulders and clenched his jaw. "I'm not familiar with this little hidey-hole of yours," he explained. "How many exits do we have down here?"

******************************************************************************************************************************************************

Nahla had listened to Talon's words intently and grimaced slightly when the helicopters could be heard outside.

"That would be them now."

"Want me to send Odin away? People always get so nervous around him. I'll never understand why."

"Riley," Nahla groaned, "I think you made me throw up in my mouth a little. Please, stow the sarcasm." Though her words were somewhat playful, her glare was anything but.

The archer may have been sharing her bed, but that didn't mean she wouldn't call him out when he was being an ass. Riley had a habit of pissing her off when they were on the field. Then again, so did everyone else who made jokes, really.

******************************************************************************************************************************************************

"Lucia! Judah!"

"Jesus Christ, what am I looking at right now?" Lucia asked with a slightly amused, but mostly bewildered expression. Nikolai looked like the saddest Santa Claus ever. Taking a seat nearby, she gave her large friend a wry grin. He looked so cheerful.

It was weird, but a good weird.

"I have to sit here and do nothing, but they said it would not take long. They lied."

Lucia laughed. "You've been growing out that beard for decades, Nikolai," she pointed out. "It would take anyone a long time to shave that fucker off." The other women clearly did not approve of her word choice. "I can't imagine what you'll look like without your beard. What if you're ugly!" She slapped him on the knee and chortled.

The Talon waited patiently for her comrades to finish, before smiling at Riley. She knew he was being somewhat facetious, but it still presented a decent opportunity for her.

"You've always been able to calm him." She said, her dark eyes looking peculiarly similar to Odin's when they found each-other. "Besides, I have nothing against making our guests just a little nervous. However..." her tone was sharper now. "You two are my sharpest pairs of eyes, so I want both of you at a distance from proceedings, with a wide field of view."

===========================================================================================================================

"Keeping secrets is... lonely."

"Everyone's entitled to their own." Christa said, coming over to sit opposite him, cross-legged on the floor. "However, you have my confidence, if you want it."

===========================================================================================================================

"How many exits do we have down here?"

"Enough that it would take the enemy months to root us out of all of them." Chen responded, brusquely "Which is why if they're smart, they won't bother. They'll find a way to force us to come to them, and since we can't survive down here for very long even if they don't find us, we'll have to figure out how to give them more than they bargained for when we inevitably do."

As they began to make their way over to the others, Chen put out his arm to keep Luka back, the two of them drifting out of earshot.

"The next time I tell you to be somewhere at some time, I don't want to have to come and fetch you." he muttered "It worked out today. We got some new guys and no-one died, but speaking of them... They're your old squad, but this is my mission. They'll follow my orders with or without your blessing. I'd appreciate it if you helped them understand that."

"Target down."

Yu's own target dropped immediately as a double-tap hit him right in the face. Turning to the side, he saw Clementina's man sliding down one of the tent poles to the ground, painting it red as he went. Waiting a few seconds, Yu listened for shouts of alarm, and the roars for approaching engines. There were none. The brief gunfire had cone unnoticed among all the other chaos.

"Targets down. Everyone, move up!" he ordered.

Leaving the relative safety of the derelict hanger, they made the short dash across to the bikes, and each began to mount up. There were more than enough to go around.

"I am in now way dressed for this!" Selena said bitterly, as the cold and wind struck her.

"We make for the western perimeter." Yu told the others, starting up his own engine. "Ride through the breach, and make our way to the tree line two clicks from there. Whatever happens, do not stop! We get one chance at this, now let's go!"

Revving him engine aggressively, Yu tore at the throttle, and sped away with the squealing of tires.

"Can you confirm that the men who attacked you are in these files?"

Barrows skimmed through the dogeared folders, most of them were stained by the various sources of filth that made up the skin of Alpha Rad. The Songbirds had sent him to fight for plenty of meaningless hills and houses but this place, ugh, this one was sitting wrong with him now. This was quickly topping the shit list.

"This looks like them. The ones I saw anyway."

Barrows passed back his candidates. A pair of twins (he wasn't sure which was the one he fought) and the super tan. Maybe if they had some good intel on them then he could stop chasing shadows and get down to the job he was hired to do.

"I think you made me throw up in my mouth a little. Please, stow the sarcasm."

Riley winced internally at her words. They'd been apart long enough that it'd slipped his mind how his joking at times like this got under her skin. Ah well, it was done now. He'd just have to make it up to her tonight.

"You two are my sharpest pairs of eyes, so I want both of you at a distance from proceedings, with a wide field of view."

Riley tapped two fingers to his temple in a casual salute. "Yes ma'am."

========================================================

"However, you have my confidence, if you want it."

Under normal circumstances, Acolyte would have never even considered talking about that with a complete stranger. But Christa seemed kind and fair minded. He couldn't have imagined anybody talking Nikolai into parting with his weapons and into a strange settlement before he'd met her. Besides, keeping it silent was killing him.

Opening his eyes and locking onto hers, Acolyte took a breath and said bluntly, "I'm dying. Nikolai is the only one who knows."

========================================================

"It worked out today. We got some new guys and no-one died, but speaking of them... They're your old squad, but this is my mission. They'll follow my orders with or without your blessing. I'd appreciate it if you helped them understand that."

"My men are competent professionals," Korovitch replied and left the subject of their reliability at that. "As for the delay, I knew what I was doing, and I always do. You'd do well to remember that."

Without another word, he pushed past Chen's outstretched arm and followed after the rest of Iron Squad.

"You'd do well to remember that."

Chen let Luka barge past him, staying a moment to chuckle to himself. Between the Walking Death Wish, the Knight Errant, and Captain Scowl-A-Lot, it looked like it was all up to him to provide the laughs on this mission. A second later, he turned on his heel and marched back to the others.

"Alright." he said to the rest of Iron Squad. "Here's all you need to know..."

A few minutes later...

"So that's the gist of it." Chen concluded "We protect the Kill Switch, which is Neil's responsibility, until the others find a way to expose and neutralise who's behind all this. If we don't, then this place will become the spark that somebodies going to use to ignite a world war. That's our mission, and if we're all clear on that point, it's time we moved out and proceeded to the next phase."

===========================================================================================================================

"I'm dying. Nikolai is the only one who knows."

"Dying?" Christa repeated, searching his eyes as if she might see the cause behind them. "Why would you not tell your comrades, those whom you depend on?"

=========================================================================================================================

"This looks like them. The ones I saw anyway."

"Good." Hammond's frown softened for a second. "Now we have names for out enemies, we need not waste time seeking them out. Sooner or later, they will be compelled to come to us."

"GENERAL!" came the cry of a runner who streaked into the command centre. "We have an emergency!"

"Spit it out then!" Hammond replied impatiently.

"We have reports of hostile contacts on the surface."

"What?!" Hammond asked, incredulous "Are we being attacked?"

"Negative General, their presence has come from inside the facility, and they're attempting to escape on captured ATV's. Selena Harnandez is confirmed to be with them."

Even in comparison to their whitewashed surroundings, Hammond turned visibly pale.

"That's not possible." Hammond's voice was quiet. "All paths to the surface are secure. How did they get out?"

"Unclear, but we have fireteams shadowing and awaiting further orders. Do we return Ms. Hernandez to our custody?"

"Don't bother." Hammond fixed his subordinate with an intense stare. "Kill them all, and then round up all support staff on the surface and bring them to me. I want to know how this slipped the net!"

"With all due respect General..." the runner responded, confused. "You impressed upon us the value that Hernandez had as a prison-"

"I GAVE YOU AN ORDER SOLDIER!" Hammond bellowed. "NO-ONE LEAVES RACDI-ALPHA! THAT IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE, AND WE WILL TAKE NO CHANCES ON THAT POINT! TELL OUR FIRETEAMS TO ENGAGE WITH LETHAL FORCE! IS THAT UNDERSTOOD!"

That's our mission, and if we're all clear on that point, it's time we moved out and proceeded to the next phase."

Korovitch remained silent, but Wickers piped up. "Aye, we understand. But do we have a way of finding out if this Hernandez lass has even made it out alive? A secret exit's a secret exit, but unless it gets 'em well clear of the perimeter, that Barrows fella is gonna be on 'em like flies on shit."

================================================================

"Why would you not tell your comrades, those whom you depend on?"

"It's Lucia," Acolyte replied. "I've known her the longest. I left... where we came from, with the rest of the Free Men, so I could protect her. After Nikolai, she's found it the hardest to readjust. She's frightened about what might be around the corner, she's unsure of what she'll do." He sighed. "I'm more or less the only constant in that, I think. If I tell her the truth, what little peace of mind she has will crumble away. I don't know what that would do to her, but it wouldn't be good."

Getting up, he crossed the room to his bag, and produced a small tin, containing rolling papers and tobacco, just another of the many things he'd traded for on the songbird's credit. It'd been years since he'd smoked, and years since he'd drank before Orphan had given him that beer back in the Pit. But the longer he spent outside the prison, the less comfortable he felt in the trappings of a monk. That way of living had helped save his life during his addiction, and protected his sanity in The Pit, but out here in true freedom, it was beginning to feel like an ill fit. "I don't know what your community's stance is on things like this, but I hope you don't mind one little vice," he said.

Rolling the cigarette, he returned to his previous train of thought. "It's ridiculous when you think about it. I'm supposed to be her closest friend, and yet aside from that I'm a monk and that I'm Dutch, things that are readily apparent, I haven't told her the smallest thing about myself." He laughed wryly. "She doesn't even know my real name, and she's certainly not stupid enough to think my parents named me Acolyte."

"We get one chance at this, now let's go!"

Lewis rushed over to one of the quad bikes and Aggie followed. Without a second thought, Aggie went to the corpses and stripped them off their jackets. She tossed Lewis one and began to wear one as well before they set off. The adrenaline began to kick in as both Lewis and Aggie hopped on their own respective quad bikes before speeding off behind Yu. They kicked up snow and dirt as they rushed out of the area with the wind whipping at them the more speed they picked up. The commotion below drew most of the surface soldiers away but Aggie wasn't too sure that would be forever. Even the General would have some sort of force guarding the perimeter and they wouldn't be slouches either.

"These things aren't exactly silent!" Aggie yelled to Yu as they swerved around buildings and obstacles on their way to the perimeter.

"NO-ONE LEAVES RACDI-ALPHA! THAT IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE, AND WE WILL TAKE NO CHANCES ON THAT POINT! TELL OUR FIRETEAMS TO ENGAGE WITH LETHAL FORCE! IS THAT UNDERSTOOD!"

"That sounds like my queue to grab the heavy ordnance." Barrow's grunted, clearing his throat a little. "These ones have shown they like close range and melee action, tell the teams to keep their distance. " He added. "All the kung fu bullshit in the world wont help them against a fuckin' RPG."

Small bands of self proclaimed heroes and bad asses, why did they have to keep popping up everywhere? They couldn't just be the usual faceless soldiers in the horde that maybe rose to the occasion through gritted teeth, nooo, they had to try and be a bloody hero while they were at it! Well at least twats like these were always fun to put down. The looks they always gave when things didn't go there way... 'Oh if one of them tries to start a speech about the true reason to fight or philosophy and killing I will bust a tit.' Fingers crossed if Barrows had to go hand to hand with one of them it was a strong silent type.

"Keep me updated on the location, I'll see about taking a team and cutting them off." Barrows grabbed a rifle from a nearby stockpile, slinging its strap over his shoulder. No quips this time around, it was time to read the room.

"I don't know what your community's stance is on things like this, but I hope you don't mind one little vice,"

"It's not a problem." Christa replied, continuing to listen. After Acolyte had finished, she sat in thought for a few moments.

"You seem like a rational man..." she began "I'm sure you don't need me to tell you, that one way or another, Lucia is sure to find out at some point. Under no circumstances will it be easy for her, but if you only end up giving her a few days, maybe less, to come to terms with the news, how much worse do you think it will be then? If I may be bold... I think what you try to rationalise as shielding her, is really designed to save yourself from seeing her pain, hoping that you might drop dead out of the blue one morning, and not have to be around to face her grief."

Despite the harshness of her words, she kept looking at Acolyte with an expression that was half kindness, half slightly morbid fascination. Reaching out, she put a hand on his arm.

"It may be possible for me to help you." she revealed "I make no promises, but we have good doctors here, and we are not so noble that we have not traded with the pirates around this island for some fairly advanced medical supplies. We may yet be able to prolong, or perhaps save, your life. However, such treatment would not go unnoticed by your loved ones. If you accept our help, they would have to be informed, by you, or by me."

======================================================================================================================================

"A secret exit's a secret exit, but unless it gets 'em well clear of the perimeter, that Barrows fella is gonna be on 'em like flies on shit."

The reminder of the odds stacked against them, and the mention of Barrows' name in particular, made Chen dearly want to lash out against the wall, or even wish he was still up on the Mid-Levels, breaking faces. However, he kept his composure. If he really was leading this mission, he had to step up to the plate.

"That's why we kicked the hornet's nest down here today, to take everyone's eyes off the surface." he replied, coolly. "How much of a head start it will give them is hard to say. If you want brutal honesty? The odds were never going to be in our favour, and the surface team were on their own from the moment we started this. With no way to communicate over long distance, there's no way for us to tell if anything we do from now on is making a difference. That's the reality of the situation, and I don't see any greenhorns here who need it dressed up nice and pretty for them, do you?"

Chen started to gather up his equipment. Hope might have been thin on the ground, but he was sure as hell going to be seen to be leading these people in some sort of direction.

"I'll say this though..." he continued "My brother learned a thing or two about not giving up from the Colonel himself. He's not easy to kill, and neither am I. We all no a slim chance is the best we're gonna get, so let's play our hand, instead of wishing we had a better one."

====================================================================================================================================

"What if you're ugly!"

"At first, I was worried there would be more scars." Nikolai said, the movement of his jaw prompting further tutting from his barber, which did not deter him. "But Natalia... she is liking the scars... I think."

"But Natalia... she is liking the scars... I think."

Lucia grinned like a giddy schoolgirl. "Well, you two are kinda... special," she told him. "If I had to guess, you're probably the only person on the planet man enough for that woman. Just try not to bring the whole commune down around our heads when you start bumping uglies." The greek girl nudged him with her elbow. "That's assuming you two haven't started already!"

*************************************************************************************************************************************************

"... We all no a slim chance is the best we're gonna get, so let's play our hand, instead of wishing we had a better one."

It was like working for Sticks all over again. Always with their backs against the wall. Always playing everything close to the chest.

At least this lot didn't get off on it like Sticks had.

"There's no point in debating what-ifs," Neil remarked. "All we can do now is try to survive. Even if they failed to escape, that prerogative does not change."

*************************************************************************************************************************************************

"You two are my sharpest pairs of eyes, so I want both of you at a distance from proceedings, with a wide field of view."

"I assume I am to remain at your side throughout the proceedings?" Nahla asked.

Things had gone to hell, fast...

As Yu weaved in and out of snowdrifts, the howl of the snow-flecked, icy air, was punctuated by the occasional high pitched crack of sniper fire, as one of the many marksmen who were now closing in on their party got close to finding their mark. These guys certainly weren't chumps, but between strong winds and low visibility, hitting the small, fast moving targets of the ATV's and their riders was no easy feat, and Yu certainly wasn't going to give them a hand.

As soon as they'd come under fire, he'd ordered the others to disperse, so they couldn't all be taken out by one well-aimed RPG or mortar. They still rode in formation, but were now loosely spaced, as they weaved their way through the sprawling, external structures of RACDI-Alpha, now reduced largely to rubble. Between the wind, engines, and gunfire, Yu had to yell as loud as he could to make himself heard.

"LESS THAN THREE CLICKS TO THE PERIMETER!" he bellowed.

Off to the left, he spotted Selena give a thumbs up in acknowledgement. Her reputation in the corporate world might have been ruthless enough, but Yu had been concerned from the start that she'd be completely out of her element in his kind of battlefield. However, the way she rode was daring, not to mention extremely skilful. Little did he know that, growing up not far from the vast, barren plains of inland Iberia, Selena had grown very familiar with managing difficult terrain at speed as a child. In fact, it had been a favourite pastime of hers; and if nothing else, the threat of getting shot or blown up helped take her mind off the cold.

"Come on, Come on!" Barrows snarled as his driver scrambled to start up the battered ATV. No way was he shooting out escape vehicles and driving his own ass out there. The engine roared to life and their pursute team gunned it out of there to join the chase.

He let out an immature groan as they got hit by the wall of cold that was waiting for them outside and zipped his jacket up as high as it'd go. They couldn't have their super prison in southern France or the Italian coast. One day the Songbirds'd show him a pretty part of the world, one that even looked tarty while he blew it up! Well for now he'd have to hope the RPG they were packing would light a fire to keep him warm. Assuming the inbred driving could catch them up fast enough!

Lewis and Aggie rode close to each other but with Lewis backing up the rear while Aggie was in the middle of the formation. They weaved through the skeletal remains of the once proud facility but as they picked up speed, Lewis heard the sound of other engines in the chase. Lewis shot a glance back, spotting some vehicles closing making their way to them in the distance. Even with the loud engines and the blowing winds, Lewis was able to speak up.

"They've spotted us!" Lewis yelled out to the group. Aggie heard Lewis' warning and simply let off a string of swear words as she narrowly dodged a fallen tower.

"Then speed up!" Aggie yelled out, increasing her speed.

They were almost there...

Yu gunned his bike forward in response to the warning from behind. Briefly, he stole a glance behind and spotted around ten small shapes closing him on them (and he was certain there would probably be more than that). As the distance between them ebbed slowly away, Yu saw that one of the chasing ATV's had a man riding pillion, the unmistakable silhouette of an RPG slung over his shoulder.

'C'mon, dammit! Faster!'

Things then got, rapidly, worse, as a tide of heavy bullets streamed in from the right. An IFV had been dispatched to flank them from the right, and now emerged through the white haze, the gunner on the back training on them with a .50cal, meaning to rip them all to shreds from close range.

It was too close. They weren't going to make it...

"CLEMENTINA! ON ME!" Yu bellowed "SELENA, TAKE THE OTHERS AND BREAK LEFT! HEAD FOR THE AIRFIELD!"

With no time to contemplate on what Yu was thinking, sending them back out into the open, Selena nodded, and threw herself round in from of the path of the others, as another salvo whipped overhead.

"COME ON!" she screamed at them.‏

They sped up, not inent on wasting Yu's precious moments he was buying them. With one hand, Lewis reached into his pack and ruffled through it. The whipping winds and the tracer rounds all blazing didn't make the task any easier but this would help them escape. He grunted as he searched, his head switching between looking ahead of them and behind of him. Finally, he found what he was looking for and pulled the pins.

Grenades rolled away from Lewis' ATV and towards the oncoming attackers. Some of them released smoke but a few exploded among the pursuers.

"Damnit." Barrows cursed under his breath as the ground ahead of them exploded into thick clouds of snow. "step on it!" He roared over at the knob jockey of a driver. Their targets were scattering out even wider. He'd have to choose who to go for at this rate and put his trust in the other Songbird troops. Something he generally tried to avoid.

Well, when in doubt, go for the least aggressive. Anything else is usually a decoy, aleeson he wasn't too proud to have learned the hard way over his career. Their vehicle swerved out to follow the small group trying to break away for the airfield as Barrows bobbed himself along with the rhythm of the ATV's bumping rumble.

'Steady... just... about...' And the rocket was away! Hopefully leading its target of the biggest van in the group.

'Shit!'

Selena would have said as much, and more, had she not been so busy gritting her teeth and willing her bike on as fast as it could go. The rocket had passed no more than a few feet above her head, almost singing her hair. It now streaked away ahead of her, veering off to the right as it left a twisting coil of grey smoke in it's wake, that was quickly dispersed by the wind. It impacted with a burnt out pillar box around a hundred meters ahead, throwing up a plume of dust, snow, and chunks of concrete.

Their pursuers were still too far away to fire on them accurately. Even so, that had been close, and they continued to close the distance, knowing that their prey was lost to them as soon as they crossed the perimeter.

'Whatever you're going to do Yu, do it fast!'

Clementina had fallen silently into formation just off Yu's shoulder, as the two of them pushed right, behind the IFV to out-flank their flanker. Fortunately, the gunner had been indecisive for a few moments when their group had split up, before cumbersomely deciding to try and fix Yu back in his sights, as the faster pursuers when after the others. He was behind now though, and they were too manoeuvrable.

At Yu's signal, they split up once more, gaining on the vehicle from either side. Clementina's advance was followed by plumes of dirty snow, as bullets slammed in the ground behind her, while Yu went the long way around. By the time the gunner figured out what was going on, Yu was already at the rear passenger door. Ducking back through the trap door, the man scrambled for his sidearm as he yelled in shock, but Yu was quicker. Drawing his own pistol, Yu shot the other man through the knee, causing him to collapse hard onto the back seats. In response, the drive swerved violently into the quad-bike, mangling in in a screech of metal and crunching plastic. Yu however, was no longer on it, having vaulted over into the back seats. Before the driver even realised his failure, Yu put the barrel of his gun up against the headrest, and fired through it, smearing blood and brains all over the windshield, before quickly finishing off the man in the back.

With it's driver dead, the vehicle quickly began accelerating out of control. Yu, anticipating it, was equally quick in clambering over to the front, popping the door, and pushing the body out. He slammed on the breaks just as Clementina pulled up beside.

"Get on the gun!" he ordered.

The shot went wide, because of course it did! Couldn't be easy, nothing about this assignment could be! Barrows' patience was wearing thin quickly as he strained to make out what was going on up ahead, looked like people were jumping around out there. What the hell was going on.

They were getting close though and each shot was homing in little by little. Barrows scooped up the rifle that was resting against the chair next to him and fired off a quick couple of bursts at the bike that he'd just given a close call. All he had to do was cripple their escape option, the rest would follow easily if he could do that.

The others were on the airstrip by now. The perimeter was now in sight, but they were also totally exposed. The pursuing Songbird forces less than a minute away from gunning them down.

Teeth gritted, Yu pushed his right foot deeper and deeper into the floor. The jeep may have been less agile than the quads, but it could fly over bumps that they couldn't (provided the driver held little regard for their own skeleton). As a result, Yu and Clem burst through onto the airstrip in a shower of white, between the lines of their comrades and the pursuers.

The moments confusion of the Songbirds, seeing on of their own vehicles appear from nowhere in their path, was all the invitation Yu needed.

"FIRE!" he roared, and Clementina answered with gusto. Manning the gun, she sent a hail of lead across the path of the pursuing Songbirds, who were now just as caught in the open as their prey. Yu kept them moving, accelerating across the frozen tarmac, strafing the entire line. At least three quads were sent tumbling end over end, their rides cut down, before he yanked the handbrake, and threw the tail of the jeep round to come back at them, aiming to punch right through the middle of what remained of their line.

Meanwhile, Selena scanned the view ahead for any sign of a breach in the perimeter. The outer edges of RACDI-Alpha were double fenced. Eight feet high, chain-linked, high-carbon steel, topped with razor wire, mounted on steep banks of snow and earth, with any gates made of reinforced steel and concrete. Making their own breach in that would take time they didn't have...

'There!'

A watchtower, it's supports buckled near the base by the impact of an explosive shell, had toppled forwards over the perimeter fence, flattening a section of it, that in their small vehicles they should be ale to pass through.

Looking back in response to the heavy fire, Selena saw the chaos been sown by Yu and Clementina's gambit. It was buying them the time they needed, but it was suicide. If they sacrificed themselves, that would leave the rest two trained soldiers down, with no idea what else they'd have to face before all this was through.

Even besides more sentimental factors, it was a mathematically unacceptable loss.

"Pull up!" she yelled to the other two, before screeching to a halt among them.

"Lewis, give me the last of your grenades!" she ordered. "Both of you, keep going to the breach. Once you're passed it, head for the tree-line two kilometres due West. If there's any advance Venture forces in the area, that's where they'll be. I'll catch you up, now go!"

Without a second thought, Lewis gave her his satchel of grenades. There was only a few left but they were mostly explosives remaining.They only had a few moments left but even Lewis wondered what the hell Selena was going to try.

"What about you? You're the one we need!" Lewis asked anxiously.

"I'll be fine." Selena told him, already gunning her bike into action once again. "Just get clear, both of you!"

"Come on, we have to go!" Aggie said, pushing Lewis on the shoulder. "If she wanted us to make it out then we have to!"

Aggie sped off as Lewis looked at Selena one more time before accelerating towards the breach. The pair zoomed between the fallen buildings in a mad dash to the breach.

"I am a hundred percent DONE with this!" Barrows held on for dear life as one of their own bloody cars played at silly buggers and let rip with a heavy machine gun. This was not their day.

He ducked back in and struggled against to keep his weapon steady as he rummaged in the back for a fresh rocket. Thank Christ this little box of beauties hadn't gone off. With a grunt he locked the fresh shot into place and pulled himself up again into a firing position. Enough guns for a small army between them and none of wankers riding with them could land a fucking shot! Standard of terrorists these days was going all to hell.

Well he wouldn't miss from this range. He felt the trigger click and braced himself as the rocket sparked up and lunged straight at the offending car. For a few seconds Barrows had one of those moments where the world seemed to slow down, it brought a proper smile to his face as he watched his shot trail through the air.

'Fuck!'

Yu reacted quickly as soon as he spotted the RPG, and yanked the steering wheel to one side, swinging the back around as the tyres fought for grip on the icy surface. Unfortunately, he wasn't quick enough.

"BRACE!"

The rockets slammed into the side of their vehicle, just above the rear left wheel well. Yu didn't exactly hear the explosion. When the shockwave reached him, all other sound was replaced by a lone, shrill ringing, as what control he had over their drive was yanked away from him in an instant, and they rolled over multiple times. Not having had the time to strap in, Yu was thrown from the vehicle amidst their third revolution, out onto the cold snow.

He must have blacked out, briefly after that, for the next thing he new he was rolling over onto his back, wincing in pain as his vision readjusted to the sky above.

Why wasn't he dead yet?

Not thirty feet away from him, the IFV burned, the plume of black smoke currently obscuring him from the troops who now advanced on the wreckage, no doubt wanting to confirm the kills. Tilting his head to look at what was left of the vehicle, Yu saw that most of the rear section had been reduced to a twisted, melting ruin.

There was no sign of Clementina, and no sound of anyone fighting back. Even if she had survived, Yu could call for her without giving away his own position. There was still over a dozen hostile troops out there. Too many to fight in the open on his own even before accounting for whether or not he could even lift a gun in the state he was in.

Suddenly, there were panicked shouts, and the whine of another quad engine, before the short blast of a grenade explosion, once more directed at the Songbirds. Yu thought for a brief, half-delirious second that it was Clementina raising hell amongst them. However, it was Selena who came roaring round to where Yu lay.

"Get on!" She yelled, as she pulled up in a shower of snow, immediately tossing a smoke grenade to cove their position. Yu complied, not even allowing himself to entertain the idea that he might be too injured to stand. As soon as he touched down on the seat behind her, Selena was away. Yu could do nothing else but cling on. Luckily, it seemed their was no-one still able to pursue them. For the first few hundred meters, bullets continued to whizz past them, but Selena wasn't for stopping, and she careered through the breach in the perimeter as fast as she could.

They met up with Lewis and Aggie on the edge of the forest. As suspected, they had not been followed beyond the perimeter. As hard a blow as their escape was, the Songbird forces were only safe inside RACDI-Alpha.

For what it was worth, they'd won.

Detaching himself from the bike, Yu could do nothing else but sink against a nearby tree stump, panting and grimacing.

When the pair heard the approaching sound of motors, they hid but only after seeing it was Yu and Selena did they emerge from the brush. Lewis looked relived that Selena and Yu had made it out safe but Clementia was missing from the group.

"What happened?" Lewis asked Selena as Aggie went to Yu and see if he had any wounds needing attending to.

"There were too many..." Selena answered, out of break and visibly trembling as all the adrenaline began to dissipate. "The truck was destroyed... I only found Yu... there was no time..."

"Barrows." Yu hissed "I saw him. He fired the rocket."

It seemed like both he and Chen owed that man some payback now.

"It-it doesn't matter now." Selena said. "We got out, and now we need to keep going. That's what's important. As soon as they lost contact with RACDI-Alpha, Venture Horizon would have dispatched military forces here. We need to find them if we want to ever get out of this wilderness."

That is, if Venture wasn't going to find them first... as at that moment, the four survivors found themselves caught in a web of laser sights, as soldiers in arctic camouflage burst out of the trees from every direction, barking orders.

"Halt!"

"On your knees! Hands behind your head!"

"Do it now!"

"We mean you know harm, we are allies!" Selena answered, taking charge as she complied with their demands, and as more soldiers came forward to frisk them for weapons. "My name is Selena Hernandez, Head of Venture Horizon Corporate Intelligence and Negotiation Initiative. Recently held captive at RACDI-Alpha by hostile occupying forces. Authorization Red Autumn."

That last part got their attention, for no sooner had they been rounded up, than they were freed of their restraints, and the Captain of the soldiers approached Selena directly.

"Apologies, Ms Hernandez." he said "Our intelligence suggested that you were a priority target for the attack on RACDI-Alpha, and were presumed dead."

"It's quite alright Captain." Selena answered courteously. "In the current climate, no-one need apologise for vigilance."

She gestured over to Yu and Aggie.

"My companions need urgent medical attention, and I have a message for your commanding officer."

"I make no promises, but we have good doctors here, and we are not so noble that we have not traded with the pirates around this island for some fairly advanced medical supplies. We may yet be able to prolong, or perhaps save, your life. However, such treatment would not go unnoticed by your loved ones. If you accept our help, they would have to be informed, by you, or by me."

"I suppose you're right," Acolyte replied. "Understand, I never planned on not telling them. I said to myself I'd wait for the right time. But you know how it is, the right time never seems to be now."

"My brother learned a thing or two about not giving up from the Colonel himself. He's not easy to kill, and neither am I. We all no a slim chance is the best we're gonna get, so let's play our hand, instead of wishing we had a better one."

Korovitch grunted in acknowledgement, and then asked, "so what's our next immediate step? Where do we go from here?"

===========================================================

"You two are my sharpest pairs of eyes, so I want both of you at a distance from proceedings, with a wide field of view," Talon said.

"I assume I am to remain at your side throughout the proceedings?" Nahla asked.

"I suppose I'll lurk at the back in the shadows," Riley said. "Give them something to think about."

The respective entourages of Helios International and the Arab Protectorate had been on the ground for all of ten minutes, and already there was an incident.

They had touched down on the outskirts of the town, so as to not find themselves surrounded in the lion's den. They weren't completely stupid, though much further out and they wouldn't be under the protection of the Songbird's liberated CONDOR technology, and would put everyone in jeopardy.So, The Talon was forced to leave the gates of the compound, and walk down through the markets to investigate. Followed by a train of her own faithful.

When they arrived, things had clearly deteriorated. A crescendo of angry yelling rose on their approach; and, when arriving fully on the scene, several guns were being waved angrily in several faces. Almost lazily, The Talon drew her own side-arm and fired a shot into the air, silencing the scrum, before moving forward to investigate the scene. A Protectorate soldier was on the ground, being treated by medics for a gunshot wound to the abdomen, as he writhed in pain. Several of his comrades had, up until just now, been attempting to get at the apparent culprit, a Helios operative who was now surrounded by a ring of steel, formed by the rest of his squad.

"Commanding officers, to me." The Talon spoke sternly, in English. "Everyone else will keep still and silent if they wish to live."

Cowed by The Talon's commanding air, two officers obeyed, and stepped forward to join her, giving each-other threatening looks in the process.

"I see only soldiers here. Where are your delegates?" she asked.

Both soldiers balked at first at freely divulging such information. However, under The Talon's glare, they complied like children caught out past curfew.

"Our unit was sent ahead to scout the town." The Helios man admitted "We were ordered to make sure that the approach was clear of..." His eyes flitted away nervously "complications."

"We were given similar orders." the Protectorate officer confirmed.

"So your masters still suspect a betrayal?" for a moment, The Talon looked amused "And yet, I am the one who has committed the least violence so far."

Both officers struggled to find a response to that.

"You first." She said to the Protectorate officer, before anyone else had the chance to talk. What happened here?"

"Our unit's sighted each other at this intersection." the man answered, more confident and officious now. "Preliminary contact was established without incident, until a mercenary..." the word was spat like acid off the officers tongue "under this man's command, opened fire on one of my men!"

"Corporal Barnes used appropriate force in response to being threatened with an eight inch serrated blade!" The other man retorted.

"And, the advent of this altercation was..." The Talon urged them along, looking displeased.

"I... ordered Corporal Barnes to speak to some of the local women." The Helios officer admitted. "I wanted to gather intelligence on LTIP and Songbird movements in the town."

"The manner in which the foreign thug spoke to these women was disrespectful!" The Protectorate man interjected. "Private Kalash was duty bound as a loyal soldier of the Arab protectorate confront him. These are our people!"

"And yet..." The Talon replied, smoothly. "This is the first time Protectorate forces have been seen in this place, since 'your' people were abandoned in the wake of the Tiger advance in the early days of the Pan-Arabian War."

The Arab officer swelled so fiercely with rage he may well have been in danger of bursting. Even then, however, he dared not challenge The Talon.

"For several years now, it has been Songbird forces who have protected this settlement from LTIP and other threats, and enforced order, while The Arab Protectorate has sat brooding in what remains of her empire. Now, you choose to return, only when I offer your government an opportunity to reclaim their lost glory. The people here would never betray me to your forces, and you will never presume to own them again."

The Talon's tone had barely changed, and yet, she seemed to become magnitudes more dangerous over the course of those few moments.

"You will each return to your superiors and confirm that they have safe passage to my compound. You will also tell them how your forces engaged each-other, and both sustained casualties before my forces arrived to restore calm."

"Casualties?" The Helios man whimpered "What do you mean?"

Without acknowledging him further, The Talon brushed past the two officers, and walked to where the Protectorate soldier was being treated on the ground. Calmly, and without warning, she executed him, drawing her pistol and shooting him in the head; before, in the same, fluid motion, bringing up her gun to point it across the street at Corporal Barnes. The man died where he stood, as The Talon's bullet found it's mark even through the ring of soldiers that protected him.

Before anyone could so much as curse her, The Talon raised one of her clawed fingers into the air. At the signal, Songbird soldiers rose from their prone positions on rooftops all around, with weapons ready, and clear fields of fire down on to both opposing platoons.

"One more thing..." she said, turning back to the officers. "Tell them my scouts are better than theirs."

====================================================================================================================================

"Where do we go from here?"

"First things first, we lay low until this place is a little less crawling with hostiles." Chen answered. "We can't sit pretty for too long though. After today, Hammond will be tearing up whatever twisted rulebook he has to find us and put our heads on spikes. We can't take him in a head on battle, and we don't have the resources to outlast him. We need to bypass his forces and kill the son of a *****. It's the only way to end this. To even have a chance, we're going to need something big to draw his attention, and we're out of explosives. That leaves only one resource left: a bunch of pissed off crazies who've been lauded over by men with guns their whole lives, and love nothing better than a good fight... The General Population."

With that, Chen set out ahead away from the cave, and into the twisting, icy tunnels.

"Let's go make some friends."

====================================================================================================================================

"the right time never seems to be now."

Christa smiled warmly.

"I understand. Forgive me, if I am ever too harsh on newcomers to this sanctuary, it is only because I can see my old self in them."

Getting up, she strode back over to the door, pausing before she left.

"You can see our doctors at any time you like. There will be a gathering tonight. I suspect you may find ample opportunity to take your loved ones aside and give them the news. You might find it easier to break it to them if your appointment gives you a clearer picture of what you face."

===================================================================================================================================

"That's assuming you two haven't started already!"

"We... not..." Nikolai stammered, his face getting unusually flushed. "It's... You! What about you? Are you lying with anyone?"

Nikolai's awkwardness was matched only by his determination to steer the subject away from him and Natalia.

Through the encounter, Riley stood in a shaded alley between two buildings, his golden gaze drawing uneasy glances from the various soldiers.

"Tell them my scouts are better than theirs."

"That certainly was something," he muttered to himself.

"Let's go make some friends."

"I'll have to take a different approach," Korovitch said. "There's not a man alive out there that'd listen to me."

Acolyte grunted in acknowledgement as he went outside, crushing the dog end of his cigarette into the dirt underfoot.

"Tell them my scouts are better than theirs."

Taking in all of the shocked expressions around her, Nahla had to try not to smirk. Despite the catharsis, she always did feel a bit uneasy when Talon dished out such ruthlessness. Riley had told her about the scientists she'd coldly dispatched during the Phantom op. She'd have to get used to this sort of thing now that they were working so closely together again.

While exchanging nasty glances with some of the soldiers, Nahla leaned over and whispered to her leader. "These amateurs aren't worth our time," she remarked.

"There's not a man alive out there that'd listen to me."

Neil shrugged and looked to Chen. "He's got a point," he said. "Many of the inmates know our faces. While I have a better relationship with them given... my past, I don't know if it's a smart idea to broadcast that we've been around. If we're going to do this we've got to vet our marks before we engage them. We have to know they can be trusted before we even talk to them."

"It's... You! What about you? Are you lying with anyone?"

Suddenly very flustered, Lucia waved her hands in front of her face and shook her head. "Wh-what?!" she chuckled nervously. "N-no, I haven't. Not since before... you know... all this happened to me." Considering the present company, she had to be vague. "No, I've thought about it from time-to-time, but I don't know. I don't know if I'd really be comfortable with it right now... even though it'd be a nice thing to happen to me." She laughed again. "But shit, you think I'd fuck any of the Freemen? Keep dreaming!"

"These amateurs aren't worth our time,"

"The military might of both the Arab Protectorate and Helios International is formidable." The Talon answered, diplomatically, before adding "Their fatal flaw, if anything, is that they will never take an organisation as fluid as ours seriously, and they will always assume that we need them, more than they need us."

The other two parties dispersed, retreating back to the outskirts of the town, and The Talon led her men back to the compound. The formalities were over, and negotiations could begin in earnest.

Hours later...

Only Dietrich and The Talon herself had been present in her chambers for the negotiations. She was confident enough not to require an armed escort (which was more than could be said for those negotiating with her), and she did not want to intimidate her guests any more than she had done already.

The sun had almost set by the time their session concluded, and one by one, each party emerged, all looking far more pleased than they had entering the chambers side by side (though they were all still being accommodated as far apart in the compound from each-other as possible).

"We have an agreement." The Talon told the rest of her followers. "Things should be finalised before the morning, and then we can move on."

She smiled.

"With that in mind, you should all get some rest, while you can."

====================================================================================================================================

"If we're going to do this we've got to vet our marks before we engage them. We have to know they can be trusted before we even talk to them."

"Really? Wow! Why didn't I think of that?!" Chen exclaimed, slapping his palm on his forehead theatrically, before turning back to them. "Relax, will you. I'm not a fucking moron and I wasn't dropped down here yesterday. I know how this works; but we either get to work gathering allies, or we wait for Hammond to make them all his, and then we really will be fucked. Now, are you coming or not?"

====================================================================================================================================

"But shit, you think I'd fuck any of the Freemen? Keep dreaming!"

Nikolai shrugged, teasing her slightly even in that. She wasn't the only one who could play this game any more.

"Nikita will be disappointed." he told her "I know he was wanting to be alone with you on the ship. I tell him he should just ask for what he is wanting, but he is younger still than the others, more gentle."

When Nikolai was clean-shaven, the skin beneath was fairly unblemished compared to much of the rest of his body. Hair wouldn't have grown out of scar tissue, after all. This was not to say he looked gentle. In fact, it turned out that he had a jaw line that wouldn't have looked out of place on a breeze block. He did, however, look younger; and, after the dentistry that came next, where they gave him false teeth to replace the ones that had been lost or smashed in the plane crash (Nikolai enjoyed that procedure even less than the shave) he looked almost handsome... in a certain way.

"They say there are hot springs at the highest point in the camp." Nikolai said when he was all done, lisping slightly as his mouth got used to its new geography. "The only place to wash underground was in the ice lakes of the North Quarter. I think I will find out what warm water is like."

"The only place to wash underground was in the ice lakes of the North Quarter. I think I will find out what warm water is like."

Lucia smelled her armpit and gagged. No wonder these pacifists had been mad-dogging her all day.

"Once you've experienced warm water, bathing will never be the same for you again," Lucia explained. "Would you believe it that people actually fall asleep in the bath sometimes? I bet you never saw anything like that in the Pit. You'd be lucky not to wake up to someone drowning you."

The need to speak so cryptically was beginning to grate on her, but now that their hosts were finally out of the room they could speak freely.

Lucia smiled. "I'm glad it doesn't have to be like that anymore," she said. "I'm proud of you, you know? You've grown a lot in a short time. This world isn't so big and scary after all, is it?"

This was the first thing Acolyte heard clearly as he entered the room. "Don't be so sure," he said. "You've never been to China." He gave a mock shudder, but it was a little forced. It was hard to work up good humour when preparing to drop a bomb like this.
