"Are you going to give him what he wants?" Ali asked rather awkwardly sounding with his back to Abigail. A smirk rose on her face.

"I wonder, do you have feelings for me Ali? Is that why you can't look at me?" Abigail pondered to herself before speaking.

"As opposed to the alternative dear Ali. Either I tell you, or I die in probably the most excruciatingly painful way possible as reward for my insolence. Then again, what is there to tell? Selena and the others kept us out the loop with regards to the overall plan. Though I can probably make an educated guess as to what their plans are." Abigail remarked in a seemingly cynical manner.

"Anyway, before we get to the main event of this whole affair, I sense you have some questions of your own to ask Ali. So by all means, go ahead, ask them. And I'll tell you what I know." She added, sounding more chipper as a result, hoping the information would sweeten the deal somewhat.

--- Meanwhile, in some other dark and dingy cell ---

"Look Zachey, I'm not gunna bullshit you. You know why you're here and you can guess what my bosses want me to do to you." Commander Barrows drawled with a slight mad dog look in his eye.

"But me, I'm a nice guy compared to all those other birds out there, I want to keep things clean and civil, Zachey m'boy. So I'm asking you what you know about how those escapees, I want to know what they've got planned and I want to know how they're playing with the electrics in here."

"So you talk to me, Zachey, and you answer like your locked in this room, alone with a fat girl who's promising to blow you right here and now and that no one, NO ONE, will ever find out about it. By which I mean honestly." That last remark Zach didn't know what to say in response. He was focused mainly on what was happening with Abigail, after all, he had promised Colonel Lee to look out for her, maybe spilling what little he knew about the other group would save both their necks.

"I'll level with you Barrows, there ain't a whole lot I know regarding the resistance, I doubt Abi knows much more, despite her connection with Miss Hernandez; guess we were kept out of the loop for this reason. Insurance policy I guess?" Zach said with a shrug.

"If I was to hazard a guess as to what they got planned; probably cause you guys some chaos and buy time for the others to do whatever the hell they got planned. As for the electrical fault? I ain't got no fucking clue how they pulled that off. Guess the only ones who would know are the resistance and the dead Colonel Lee."

"But... Sam's fine."

Lucia laughed nervously. "What are the odds right?" she stammered. "I mean, you were there when he said it right? When Orphan told me his name was Samuel. What's the chance both of the most important men in my life would have the same name?"

She put her hand on his shoulder. "You two were always there for me when I needed you," she said. "Now it's time to return the favor." She offered him a weak, yet sincere smile.

"He was so sure, Nahla. He was so sure she'd never let anything happen to him. But she let something happen, alright. Then she let me walk away. That scares me way more than any of her flayed corpses."

"Dietrich's arrogance was his undoing," Nahla told Riley in a flat tone. "Talon saw this. If it wasn't you it would have been someone else sooner or later. He was weak, Riley. We're all better for what you did. She made the right call."

Resting her forehead against his, she closed her eyes and caressed his cheek with the back of her hand. "Don't worry about me, Riley. She means me no harm," Nahla assured him. "Everything will be okay."

I hope...

"Talon saw this. If it wasn't you it would have been someone else sooner or later. He was weak, Riley. We're all better for what you did. She made the right call."

Riley's heart fell, and he struggled to keep his face straight. Nahla was smart and strong, and absolutely incredible. But unlike Riley, she was in Talon's grip completely. It left him utterly terrified.

"Everything will be okay."

"Right," he replied, composing himself. "Just be careful. please."

Straightening up, he went and knelt by the bed, opening his antelope hide pack. Reaching in, he searched until he produced a small leather pouch, which he upended into his hand, producing a bracelet made of animal's teeth. When Odin had been a pup, Riley had collected as many of the wolf's baby teeth as he could, which he had strung into a bracelet. It was one of the spiritual beliefs imparted on him by his time with the tribes. It concerned the bonding of souls between a hunter and a sacred animal guide. He'd worn the bracelet on the wrist of his bow drawing arm for a long time.

Returning to Nahla, he took her hand and put the bracelet on her wrist, adjusting the knot he'd tied to better suit her more slender arm.

"I'll be right here," he said.

"Now it's time to return the favor."

"That means a lot," Sam replied. "I, uh... I guess we shouldn't keep the others waiting, huh?"

"ask them. And I'll tell you what I know."

Ali grimaced. Every word she said sounded like mockery, whether it was meant to or not. A dozen different things welled up in his throat, ready to be spat out as words, but he held back. There was no point attempting to explain himself to her. She's chosen her side, and he'd been a fool to believe that there might be anything at this place to bring him comfort for his final days. She's probably marked him as evil back when he'd executed those others the day RACDI-Alpha had fallen.

"Anything you know, you can tell to the General, if you think it will help." he said eventually "I have nothing to day to you."

====================================================================================================================================

As Christa eavesdropped on their conversation, her mood grew grimmer. She didn't like Judah hearing such hard truths about the outside world. Not yet, she couldn't count on a girl as headstrong as her learning the wrong lessons from it.

"That's everything we need!" she announced cheerily, her basket overflowing with ripe fruits. "Come on, the Sun will go down in a few hours, and we'll need everything prepared for the feast by then."

====================================================================================================================================

One-Ear was still trying to act tough, but from where Chen had him pinned, he could feel the Inmate's panicked heartbeat. The discussion was all but over.

"So this is how it is, huh?" One-Ear hissed, his eyes trying to focus on the gun barrel pressed beneath his chin. "Maybe you're more like us that I thought. You ain't a Warden, that's for sure."

"In case you hadn't noticed, this isn't a prison any more." Chen retorted. "This is a war zone, and I've been in enough of them to know that you've now got two choices: Pick a side, or get caught in the crossfire."

With one last snarl, One-Ear waved his hand, and his men lowered their weapons.

"Fine. Get that fuckin' thing outta my face and we do it your way. You'd better be straight up with us!"

"Any of you last more than five minutes against Hammond's men, you'll get your clean break." Chen said, stowing his weapon and letting One-Ear go. "Unlike the General, I don't fuck around when it's time to go to war."

"Anything you know, you can tell to the General, if you think it will help." Ali said eventually after a period of silence. "I have nothing to say to you." And with that, Abigail gave out a depressed sounding sigh.

"Oh well, at least you can't blame me for trying. A shame though, I actually rather enjoyed our little conversations and chats, they helped break up the monotony a little of this occupational war we're going through, it would have been sad to see them end. After all, statistically speaking, one of us is likely to end up dead before all of this is over.

And of all the people that entered on that bleak, black day; you're really the only person that has treated me with some form of the respect throughout all this, made me think that perhaps you're not so bad after all. Perhaps there is something more there, but I can't put my finger on it.

I guess the point of what I'm trying to say was, is that, if you wanted a moment to talk about stuff other than what's going on out there..." Abigail raised one of her shackled arms to point at the door.

"Now would have been the time." She then rested one leg on top of the other, put her hands together as best she could, and then simply waited for the inevitable.

"I'll be right here."

Nahla smiled at Riley and gave him a soft kiss on the lips. "I'll keep it safe," she whispered. Once she was dressed Nahla slipped her sidearm into her hip holster and headed for the door. "Don't wait up on me, okay? Try to get some rest."

And with that she was on her way.

The mansion the Talon had made her temporary roost was a rare sight for someone like Nahla. She'd spent the better part of the last year living out of tents and inside cave afteralls. Despite its dreary decor, it made for a nice change of scenery.

Once she made it to Talon's suite she knocked on the door and waited patiently for a response.

The Talon was stood beneath the domed glass ceiling in the centre of the suite, her flesh fingers carefully caressing the magnificent device that was mounted there, when she heard the knock at the door.

"Enter." she called out, sounding almost absent-minded (though she never was), and turned to smile at Nahla as she crossed the threshold, her hand still resting on the enormous telescope.

"Nahla, at last!" she said happily. "Come. I want you to watch the stars with me."

Nahla offered an innocent grin and stood at Talon's side. "You seem to be in rare form tonight," she remarked.

"We live in exciting times." The Talon told her, stepping back to let Nahla peer through the eyepiece. Despite being three time taller than either of them, the telescope was beautifully ornate in detail, a work of art as much as industry. To find one so well-preserved was a luxury. Obviously, the rich mahogany construction meant it was obviously imported, likely by some imperial governor who had once laid claim to this part of the world from this house. The image amused her, of someone with such power and wealth going to such lengths to remind themselves of all that they could never possess.

"I find it strange, and sad..." she wondered aloud "that so many of us, when we gaze into the cosmos feel so lost. For me, it's comforting, to be reminded of the vastness of possibility so far beyond me, and so far beyond my trails. Why should something be insignificant just because it is small? However, when set against the backdrop of such permanence, even our boldest endeavours seem so much more manageable."

Nahla always appreciated her master's existential nature. She had a way with words that Nahla could never hope to rival. "Perspective is a power thing," the soldier said, rather ineliquently. "Riley returned to my bed tonight in despair. What do you make of that? I imagine this perch of yours offers a unique vantage point."

"See..." The Talon continued, delaying her answer for now. "I look up from our dying world and I see one simple truth. Rejuvenation. It is the law of the universe. Every ending is in its own way a beginning, or even a dozen beginnings. Each death gives way to new life, there's no stopping the march of survival, you simply have to look beyond the boundaries of your own attachments, when things seem hopeless. What we do, the lives we take, simply fulfil a contract untold millennia in the making. What happens next? Now, that's the truly astonishing part, but the cosmos provides..."

The Talon touched Nahla's arm as the other woman continued to stare through the eyepiece at the clear night's sky.

"I told everyone that Riley killed Dietrich on my orders. I assume he already told you that was a lie."

Nahla nodded. "Riley was disturbed by your acceptance," she explained. "That you would be so quick to forsake someone so loyal to you... what really happened, Master? What had he done to deserve his fate?"

"Loyal is the operative word." The Talon answered "Save for yourself, you would be hard pressed to find a more loyal servant to our cause than Dietrich; and, in truth, he only ever did exactly as I had instructed him to do. In short, he died because his path had arrived at its natural terminus. Our plans would not have been possible without his good work, but that work was now done. He had no more part to play, and better he die like this than be left hanging as a loose end, out of place and vulnerable. I believe that, on some level, he always understood the terms of his service to me. He believed, as I do, in rejuvenation, which is not possible without destruction; and in his final acts proved much to me about the challenges I still have left to overcome."

Turning away, The Talon moved towards the windows, looking out at the silhouette of the mountains beyond the compound. In a few hours, the Sun would begin to rise over them.

"I have a confession to make Nahla." she said "I hope you will not be angry with me."

So he really hadn't done anything wrong...

Nahla tilted her head, trying to get a better look at her Lady's face. "Oh, I thought you already confessed," she said with a small chuckle, trying to lighten the mood a bit. Her humor betrayed her fear, however. There was a weight to Talon's words that sent a shiver up the soldier's spine.

"When you and Riley first came to me..." The Talon said, not turning to face her "I matched you together. My intentions were... not entirely altruistic. Seeing you find comfort in each-other is it's own reward, of course. However, there were other reasons for why I wished it."

There was a melancholy in her voice that it was hard to judge conclusively as guilt.

"In your own ways, you were both lost. You fought, not for a better world, not even for your own personal vengeance, but because you simply did not know what else to do. I saw potential in both of you for far more than that, and hoped you would find your visions for the better world we fight for in each-other. We all have a past that has driven us here, but without a future, we will change nothing. I wanted Riley to be your future, and you his... but it hasn't worked, has it? Riley cares for you a great deal, but not enough to be inspired, not enough to fight for something greater than to fill the void within himself. Without that purpose, the void will engulf him the moment he realises that our path will not give him what he seeks. We are so close Nahla. So close... and yet we are still so vulnerable to crumbling from within. Am I supposed to risk it all on a man without faith?"

Nahla blinked stupidly. "I..." she muttered, her words failing her.

What are you saying?

"Master," she began again, "what do you mean? R-riley has been loyal to you from the start! I-I-I can talk to him if you want me to. Surely I can help him. I know I can."

"He has been loyal to me so far because I have asked nothing of him that he cannot abide." The Talon responded firmly. "I have asked him to kill faceless, nameless men, wearing uniforms he despises, in far-flung, lawless corners of the world. I have asked him to be in his element, and he would do the same for anyone fighting for any cause, because he has nowhere else to go and nothing left to lose. Until now, that was acceptable. However, when I ask him to cause suffering beyond the imaginations of ordinary men, beyond even the deaths we have caused so far, will he truly understand why? When I ask him to tear innocent families asunder, just as his own once was, do you expect him to realise that there is no other way, that these innocents are held in the grip of a system so rotten, so corrosive, that it must be shattered and all it's remnants burned, in order for all the good in the world to at last take its rightful place, free of cruelty and exploitation? When I ask of him to possess both the heartlessness to purge this world, and the love to cultivate what must come after, so that no innocent will have suffered in vain, will he truly have it in him? Tell me honestly, Nahla, of the measure of the man you love; and when you do, look to what happened to Dietrich, when he asked the same question."

"Then make him leave," Nahla blurted. She was trembling now. "With Dietrich dead, the timing couldn't be better. Just... just tell him to leave in the dead of night and everyone will just think he did it because of Dietrich! There's no reason to take it further than that..."

"Nahla, it's alright. Hush now..." The Talon said, crossing the room at the sound of her mounting distress and embracing her, with her warm arm of flesh around her back, and her cold, meta one at the back of her neck. "If I wanted Riley gone, he would be gone. I see the potential for greatness in him still. I still believe he can succeed with us, but I will need your help. I shall require your absolute obedience, regardless of what Riley thinks of the matter, if we are to same him from himself. Can you promise me that Nahla, can I hold your loyalty above question?"

"Absolutely," Nahla whispered. "Anything for you, Master." The Talon's touch had stilled her weary heart, as it always did. Nahla felt her anxiety drain out of her. She always made a point to remember moments like these. They were all too scarce.

Nahla wondered if anyone else ever got to see this side of their leader.

"I am yours, always," she said, resting her head against the Talon's shoulder.

"Good." The Talon said softly "From now on, I will need you to report everything Riley says to you in confidence. Only when I am given a window into the twists and turns of his mind, can I guide him to a path of inner peace. Most importantly of all. He must not know. He would not understand the goodness of our intentions. When he asks you of what we've spoken of here tonight, I need you to lie, convincingly. It won't be easy, I know, but it's for his own good..."

Lifting Nahla's head up to her own, and locking their eyes together, The Talon moved her flesh hand over the other woman's chest, resting above her heart, feeling in slow.

"It's in these moments," she said, smiling "where I wonder if I could do this without you, Nahla. I am blessed to have the faith and loyalty of so many, but only when we are alone, do I feel that there is someone in the world to whom I bring more than just awe, but also comfort. It is... not a connection I had ever hoped to have with anyone."

Slowly, almost tentatively, she leaned in, and their lips touched...

"Sorry!" she blurted, checking herself, but still holding Nahla close. "That was ill-judged. I do not want you to feel obliged to... I just... I'm sorry."

Again, Nahla could do nothing but blink like a fool. What had just...?

Did she...?

Had she ever apologized to anyone? Earnestly?

"Uh, um," Nahla mumbled, her face glowing bright red. "Well--I, um, I--huh? Did you... I-I'm sorry, I'm mumbling like a bafoon!"

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

"I didn't mean to startle you." The Talon sounded crestfallen "I just... I can't deny that I feel we share something, like this. The moment is just... with how far we've come, and what we still have left to overcome... I want you to know that you comfort me as I comfort you."

She began to sound more hopeful, as their embrace held, she began to lean in closer again, almost imperceptibly.

"I want to write your name in the stars tonight..." she told her "So that, no matter what else, happens, we can preserve this moment forever, even beyond when we return to the infinite that gave form to us."

"Um, okay," Nahla said. "Th-that sounds good."

What's happening here?

However uncertain she may have been, Nahla's trepidation was easily banished by Talon's soothing words.

D-does she want to fuck me?! Should I just... ask?

Nahla giggled nerviously. "Master, I... do you... what do you want me to do, Master?" she asked rather sheepishly. "Just say the word. Just say the word and it is done."

Fucking smooth, Nahla.

"I don't... I don't want to command you, not right now." The Talon said "Be here, with me, if you feel this. No declarations, no betrayals. Two loves need not have any bearing on one another. Why stay true by denying what's real?"

Nahla looked down at the bracelet Riley gave her earlier. She had a feeling he'd have given it to someone else, had he the opportunity.

You could never replace her.

Nahla bit her lower lip and giggled. "O-okay," she agreed. "B-but be gentle, okay? I've already uhhh... well, what I mean to say is that you wouldn't be my first this evening."

"Of course." The Talon's smile was infectious. "I want you to share in this."

They kissed deeply, The Talon's good hand exploring as much of Nahla's body as she could reach, but slowly, before leading her into the bedroom. Guiding the other woman's hands over her combat jacket, she stripped it off and the vest beneath it, revealing her dark, toned body was covered in mauve scars, savage-looking and yet strangely methodical.

"Nobody's ever seen me like this before." she said nervously. "Perhaps I should be asking you to be gentle with me?"

Nahla caressed the woman's chest, lingering on one of the more pronounced scars. It was in this moment that she realized how little she knew about her leader. She giggled. "Do I get to be your first?" she asked with a sinister grin. "I admit, I never imagined you'd be so... well, I suppose I always thought you'd be more aggressive in this type of setting." She pulled her eyes away from the scars and meet Talon's gaze. "It's cute."

"Well, we are just getting started..." she said, a little mischievously "I'm sure I'll get the hang of it."

She tried to strip Nahla as well, but her bladed hand was proving to be a liability.

"It's not always convenient." she giggled "Help me out."

"Of course," she said, almost a bit too formally. This whole situation was all kinds of weird.

Relax.

Nahla stripped down to her underwear and took Talon's flesh hand in her own. "If I may ask... why now?" she said. "Why haven't you ever taken anyone into your bed before now?"

"For once, it's a fairly mundane answer." The Talon said, drinking in her partners body, as the two sat on the edge of the bed. "I've always had so much to do. On the edge of my life's work, this is the first time I've ever had to clear my head. It might also be my last."

"And what about your... hobby?" she asked. "If that wasn't to clear your head then---you know what, nevermind. I don't want to kill the mood. I'm sorry."

"No, it's alright." The Talon answered "You deserve an answer..."

She guided Nahla's hands over her abdomen.

"I am forged from pain. Each of my scars, are a step along the path to what you see here. How I can do the things I can do, and the secrets of the world that I know. Deep within me, past all the layers of endurance that they could peel back, they discovered something. Something that allowed me to become something greater than they had ever anticipated. When a life is held at its limit, when you remove it from the world of understanding and create a universe all of its own within that moment, you get a glimpse of something, something that has driven me out from the Darkness and towards the Dawn. It's not recreation, it's a necessity."

"So you feel that by sharing that experience you are... enlightening them in the same way you were?" Nahla asked. She chuckled quietly. "You still have most of your skin though."

"It's not for them, it's for me." she answered.

No more talk. The two of them sank into each-other, tumbling back onto the bed.

Afterward, The Talon held her lover close, her chest heaving with shuddering breaths as the moonlight shone beaded jewels upon their skin, her ravenous hunger finally satisfied.

"Can you stay?" she whispered as she cooled down. "I'd understand if you're being missed somewhere else."

Nahla snuggled against the smaller woman and grinned. "I think I could stay a little longer," she told Talon. "Might need to persuade me though."

"Tempting." she said, kissing Nahla once more "but we should both get some sleep. There won't be much rest in our futures for a while. The Dawn is rising, and we must be there to herald it. No matter what happens with us, or with you and Riley, remember that above all."

"I'll just have to cherish this while it lasts then," Nahla replied.

[HEADING=1]ARC 3- CHAPTER 3: 'THE ONE TRUTH'[/HEADING]

A few hours later...

"Ma'am, we've reach the co-ordinates you gave us."

Selena opened her eyes, and stood up from her seat in the cargo hold( had she been sleeping?). First, she strode across the width of the hold and looked out of a porthole opposite her, but the deep navy of the evening meant she could barely see anything, as the VTOL cruised over mile after mile of the barely populated continent. She had to move up to the cockpit, where the pilots who had called for her now waited. Through their infra-red cameras, the blue of night became a crisp grey, and she saw...

Nothing but the canopy of an endless jungle. There was nothing here.

"Dammit!" she hissed under her breath, as Yu joined her up front. Looking at the monitor, the soldier understood the situation at once.

"Lieutenant," he asked the co-pilot "how sensitive is our heat-detection? Could we see structures through all this vegetation?

"That depends Sir." The co-pilot answered. Though Yu had no official rank here, the Venture pilots had taken to automatically addressing Selena as their CO, and Yu as her first officer. "Something small and abandoned might be too cold, but anything with a decent amount of human or mechanical activity should be visible."

Yu turned to Selena and shrugged.

"Could be whatever we're looking for is underground?" he suggested. "A lot of old diamond mines in this part of the world. Or, hell, maybe it's shielded with Venture technology. There's a dozen possibilities for what we might find down there."

"Which makes finding anything when we have no idea what we're looking for about a million times harder than getting here in the fist place was!" Selena answered, frustrated. "I don't know about you, but I've never ran out of rations in the jungle before."

"Please!" Yu offered a rare smile "I survived the Pit for almost two years, and jungle survival? That I'm actually trained for. All this means is that we're clutching a little harder at straws than we were to begin with. We can do this."

Sighing, Selena nodded, turning back to the pilots.

"Where's the nearest landing zone?"

"There's an oasis about twenty-five clicks to the south-west, Ma'am. Might be able to set you down on the edge of it."

As the VTOL banked towards it's new destination, Yu rejoined Lewis and Aggie in the hold.

"You two ready to stretch your legs?" he asked.

====================================================================================================================================

Though night had fallen on the camp, no-one would be getting any sleep for some time.

The air was alive with hooting and laughing, and the energetic beat of over a hundred percussion instruments, as most of the camp had come together to drink and feast. Dancers moved from partner to partner freely, as they stomped, leaped and twirled with abandon; while others moved through the crowd laden with baskets full of food, ripe, exotic fruits an roasted meats glistening on the bone, not to mention pitchers full of sweet wine. All congregated around the centrepiece, an enormous bonfire that roared and grasped at the night's sky, making the air shimmer with heat and painting the bodies of all the dancers a rich, rippling gold.

They may be pacifists, but they knew how to throw a party.

Nikolai sat alone, on a split log near the edges of the crowd. He had a leg of chicken in his hand, but he barely paid it any attention, having eyes only for the fire. He was as close as he dared get, and even here he found the heat uncomfortable. Heat aside though, he forced himself not to look away, to stare deeply into it's furious, twisting heart.

He tried to calm his mind as Acolyte had taught him, to detach himself from the fear and the pain he felt just at the sight of the flames. For a few moments, he felt like it might be working. He gazed into the heart of the fire, and saw right through it, the voices in his head drowned out by the revellers. On the other side, he saw her! Christa, laughing and drinking with the others. As she turned towards him, she seemed to Nikolai to become wreathed in flames herself, her smooth skin untouched by the blistering heat. Her eyes were deep pools of molten rock, spitting and belching burning sulphur, and Nikolai knew they were looking right at him.

===================================================================================================================================

"Again."

General Hammond watched, impassive, as two of his men forced Abigail's head down under the tub of ice water for the fifth time, holding it under for fifteen seconds, before pulling her out and throwing her unceremoniously to the floor, where she lay retching. From the other cell, Zach could be heard being beaten by Barrows and two other men. Nobody in the room was taking particular pleasure in the task, but the calm routine of it all was eerie in its own right.

Truthfully, Hammond knew the torture was unnecessary, and he didn't expect to get anything out of it. All the information he needed was easily deducible, and his true enemies would come to him soon enough. No, this was all for show, so that when he paraded these two in the Hive a few short hours from now, the Inmates who were yet to join his cause would see what would happen to those who continued to defy him.

"The ones to stayed behind. Where are they hiding?" he asked, sounding half-bored.

====================================================================================================================================

"Here's how it's gonna go down:" Chen announced as they all crowded round in the icy fox-hole. "Hammond's bringing the prisoners out to The Hive at dawn. He's gonna make a show of it and he'll be expecting an audience, so we'll oblige him. Nobody knows One-Ear and his guys are ours, so they'll be able to blend in to the crowd. When the General takes the stage, they'll start a fight. Nothing that'll frighten him off, but he'll need to prove he can keep order or the whole show's a waste of time, so he'll have to take bodies off himself to go and break everyone up. That's when we strike..."

As he spoke, Chen used the Kukri he's borrowed from Luka to scratch a diagram of arrows and crosses into the ice, representing the battleground.

"Korovitch, Pick two of Iron Squad to cover Felix when he makes a run on the prisoners. Hit fast, but only kill anyone who tries to stop you. The less attention we draw to the extraction in all the ruckus the better. At the same time, You and I will strike at the General directly. We'll probably never get close enough to get a shot on him, but we need to get close enough to force him to retreat, out of his fortified position..."

Smiling just a little through the bruising on his face, Chen turned to Neil.

"That's where you come in. I want you here, vantage point on level 4. The remainder of Iron Squad will be watching your back. Wait until Luka and I have forced him out of cover, then take the shot. As soon as you have a bead on that son of a *****, blow his fucking head off. Once he's dead, everyone get the hell out of dodge before his men can pin us down, and rendezvous back here at 0900. We do this right, and it all ends today. Any questions?"

========================================================================================================

The haze and the heat of the desert settlements below gave way to crisp, thin air as The Talon's convoy crossed the mountains. The desolation below was replaced by groves of mountain flowers, springs, and patches of pure white snow. It was beautiful up here.

The Talon sat in the back of her vehicle, Nahla at her side. In the space between them, the two held hands. Smiling at her lover, The Talon took up the receiver if her radio, and transmitted a message to all the other vehicles.

"My comrades..." she began "We have left the dust, the blood, and the fury of war to come to this place of rare tranquillity, to face perhaps out most difficult task yet. Before we must move on to the final battle, I want us all of have caught our breath. We shall have two days here, to relax, and prepare. Feel free to let tour hair down, so to speak. Ruminate on the trials that have brought you here, make your peace with them, and then steel yourself for the trials yet to come. I cannot promise that we all will not have to sacrifice everything for the salvation of this world in the coming days. However, for this fleeting moment, we shall taste the promised land."

"Again."

And so, for the fifth time in however long it had been, Abigail's head was forced down into a tub of ice water. The pain in her lungs from trying to hold her breath was getting unbearable, the temperature of the water was making worse. Abigail figured that she only had a couple more dunks before she either passed out due to exhaustion, or perished from exertion and sudden, rapid changes in temperature.

But eventually, like the four previous times before, she was half-heartedly pulled out and thrown to the floor, a sudden need for air making her cough uncontrollably. Part of her wanted to vomit right then and there, but she didn't have the stomach to do so, nor would it exactly look good for her. A few brief seconds of calm was all that she was given before that question came again.

"The ones to stayed behind. Where are they hiding?" Hammond asked without a care for the state of the woman before him. Everything was quiet for a moment, the two torturers standing over Abigail with their rifles pointed at her. It was then that she started to laugh; whether it was because of the torture itself, or if she had actually snapped it couldn't be explained, but it did make one of the guards step back away from her. Eventually, Abigail had mostly calmed down.

"This is all just to prove a point isn't Hammond? To show that your still in control of the situation. That tone of voice says it all. We both know that the resistance wouldn't be stupid enough to tell either myself or Zach where they are hiding; that's like rule number one of something right? So in a way, you're just wasting everyone's time." Abigail gave as her initial response.

"It was all supposed to be a lot simpler wasn't it? Taking over this place I mean. Yet here we are, what two weeks later? and the job still hasn't been completed. No doubt your men are getting pretty tired and restless, not to mention sick of this place. Yet you won't rest until Venture's hold has been completely broken. Hate those guys down in the deeper levels of The Pit all you want, but at least they are giving you a challenge."

"... Wait until Luka and I have forced him out of cover, then take the shot. As soon as you have a bead on that son of a *****, blow his fucking head off..."

Neil nodded firmly. This was about the only plan they'd come up with since the invasion started that the sniper actually felt comfortable with. Not only were he and the trigger a safe distance from the actual battlefield, but they'd also be making the best use of his skills.

That, and he'd get to be the one to make the General's head pop. That was certainly a plus.

Somehow he didn't think it would be that simple, however.

"... Any questions?"

"No," Neil said, "I think it's a solid plan."

*************************************************************************************************************************************************

Usually enthralled by Talon's grandiose speeches, Nahla found herself drifting off after every other sentence. There was something eating away at her in the back of her mind. Something distracting her from her purpose. She was closer to her Master now more than ever, and shared a bond with her that no one else ever had, so why did she feel so uncomfortable? Perhaps it was Riley? They hadn't had many opportunities to speak since the night he killed Dietrich, but she could tell he was hurting.

She'd talk to him as soon as they reached their destination. Set things right.

Not for Talon. For you, Riley.

Lucia hadn't been to a celebration like this since long before her imprisonment in the Pit. Well, the Freemen had partied in their own way, but it was a different atmosphere. They were all killers... survivors. Here though? These were normal folks as far as Lucia was concerned. Though she was still trying to find her barrings, relearning how to be a regular bloke was becoming easier as the days went on.

Sitting on a log with a beer in her hand, Lucia spotted Judah from across the bonfire. She and Nikolai had gotten on pretty well since joining the group.

You're still a better teacher, Lucia thought, grinning slightly.

"Hey Judah," she called out, waving the young girl over, "come 'ere!"

"You two ready to stretch your legs?"

Aggie stood up and cracked her neck. It was difficult adjusting to the hum of an engine as opposed to the acoustic hell that was her cell. All sorts of sounds bounced around but here, besides the engine and the turbulence, it was quite silent which was something she wasn't used to quite awhile. Aggie looked to Lewis who was fast asleep beside her and kicked his leg which made Lewis stand right up when he saw them getting ready for the mission. The rest was sorely needed for Lewis so he felt extra groggy getting up but he nodded at Yu.

"Rise and shine!" Aggie said, a bit eagerly than what Lewis would hope to hear. "Sorry I woke you up, I noticed we had a mission to do."

"Yeah, yeah." Lewis said, rubbing the sand out of his eyes. "Sir, what's the AO like?"

Y'know, it was times like this that Barrows was never sure if his particular mindset was a blessing or a curse. Like, y'know, he wasn't what you'd call the most loyal terrorist out there. He'd never bought into the ideologies the Songbirds had spouted about the place between factory bombings and kidnappings. He'd yet to find a thing in this world that was worth believing in. The more genuine someone tried to sound the more full of it they probably were. To him, anyway. He could spout it good enough if he had to, he'd heard it enough to know which boxes to tick but that wasn't why Barrows had joined up. He did it cus he couldn't function elsewhere!

'In retrospect I should have joined the army... oh who am I kidding, like that would have worked!'

Lately though these birds hadn't been scratching that particular itch. Given long enough and Barrows got more on edge and had to fight the urge to punch the nearest person in the side of the head so they hit the floor like a sack of potatoes. god that was a beautiful sight. Not this though, he never signed on for playing S&M with catering staff. With all the talk of being harsher on them Hammond was still tip toeing around things, meanwhile they had no idea what was going on out there.

'Fuck this. I am not going out in this frigid hell hole.' Barrows left the two mooks to their fisting party with Zach and went out into the hall, marching straight for Abigail's room. She seemed weirdly articulate for someone with a mouth full of ice water. In fact she and Zach had been like that all through the process. So did Venture give their CEO's karate lessons and their caterers torture etiquette lessons? Have 'em balance books on their heads while they walked over hot coals or something? What a mysterious company. He stood in the doorway, surveying the scene.

"Hate those guys down in the deeper levels of The Pit all you want, but at least they are giving you a challenge."

"Y'know, love, most people at least TRY and save their own skins. What you don't even have some good drunk guard gossip to share?" He shook his head woefully. At least it wasn't his turn to ride the Abi train right now. Even the woman's mad laughter sounded rehearsed.

'In a way we're wasting time... in a way - Jesus Christ.' This was getting them nowhere slowly.

"We need to talk." Barrows nodded to Hammond.

"Y'know, love, most people at least TRY and save their own skins. What, you don't even have some good drunk guard gossip to share?" Barrows asked as he entered the room, before going over to Hammond and saying something privately. In the meantime, Abigail had somehow managed to twist herself around in her binds to where she was now looking towards the entrance of the room.

"Oh, I do have some stories to tell you Barrows, kinda funny ones, but I don't think Hammond over there would find them appropriate; all work and no play if you know what I mean." She let that statement hang in the air for a few moments before speaking again.

"Look; can't we all just agree that we're going around in circles at this point? They won't come to you, that much is obvious." Meanwhile, inside her head, several different voices were talking once. One was saying to try and make a mad dash for the door, another was thinking about Zach and how he was coping, another about how those that escaped were getting on, and so on.

Don't blow it now Abigail, you're walking a very fine line here.

Judah stared blankly into the fire, Natalia's dark history dominating her thoughts. These free men, those that Natalia had brought with her, probably had similar horrific tales. It was likely that they all had histories forged in one adversity or another. Judah knew that she should feel lucky, given her opportunities and the freedoms she had always been afforded... but she couldn't. The girl sat silently, trying to figure out why she always felt so damn miserable.

Judah.

She jumped and looked across the fire, still stuck in a haze.

"Mmm. Yeah?" she responded as she stretched out and relaxed her posture.

Riley sat in the passenger seat of an open top jeep. The huge foot well between the unoccupied bench seats in the vehicle's back was filled solely by Odin, who had room to stretch out comfortably.

The soldier driving hadn't said a word, and Riley wasn't about to bother with conversation himself. He was too wrapped up in his own thoughts. All sorts of rumors were flying around the songbirds. Some were cautious of him. Others, slaves to the Talon's whims, thought him a hero who had rooted out the traitor.

And Nahla. She'd been largely absent as of late. When he had briefly seen her, it had all but been in passing. What ate at him was something he couldn't put his finger on. If he didn't know better, he'd say something smelled different.

He needed to see her.

=================================================================

Korovitch listened to his orders silently. There would be time to issue his own once Chen was done.

When the other man fell silent, he turned to his squad. "Wickers and Tucker on Felix. Fiona and Hayes, you're on Verner."

"Uh, sir," Fiona piped up. Korovitch turned to face her, and her gaze wandered down the line to Tucker. "Sir, I just-"

"I know," Korovitch replied. "But I want you both sharp. We are capable, and we are a unit. You're each with someone reliable at your back, and this way you have no distractions. The objective comes first."

There was a pause. Then Fiona muttered, "yes sir," and stepped back into line.

Samuel had been dragged kicking and screaming into good spirits, and now he was even dancing. The events looming on his horizon were still doing all the looming they could at the back of his mind, but he was able to push it back for a while.

"So," said Jara. "Tell me where you came from." Jara was the woman who had convinced him to come away from reading and eating to dance instead. They'd spent the better part of two hours talking while they moved.

"Holland," Sam replied. "I mean, when I was born, it was part of the Netherlands Trade Republic still, but yeah."

And so they discussed that for a while. He told her about growing up in the slums with his brother and mother. Eventually, they tired of dancing, and went to find drinks. Acolyte was just coming away from a fold out table with two beers in hand when he spotted Lucia moving towards one of the fires.

"Hey Lucia," he called out.

"She is the friend you mentioned earlier, yes?" Jara asked.

"Yeah, Acolyte replied, grinning.

Jara smiled and tilted her head. "She's rather pretty, isn't she?"

Acolyte nudged her with his shoulder. "Oh, you're not jealous, are you?"

Jara giggled. "You're very confident, aren't you?"

"Oh, sorry if I seemed too forward," Acolyte replied sardonically.

"Well, I didn't say you were wrong."

Acolyte's smile widened and he slipped an arm around her shoulders. "Come on, I'll introduce you. You know Judah?"

Chen nodded at the other's approval of the plan. He was pleased, but smiling would have given away his own lack of confidence. Truth be told, he'd never really been in a position of command before and he didn't care for it. Yu had always been better at the whole stoic, dependable act. However, he'd been called upon to step up, and serving under Lee had taught him what people needed from their leaders. His misgivings had to remain his own until somebody else raised them. It was a long shot, but Chen didn't see another opportunity like this coming any time soon; and now he'd committed the others to this path he had to lead from the front.

"Good." he said a little stiffly. "We've got a few hours to kill before we move. Get some rest, eat your fill, and make your peace with any unfinished business you have. Neil and I will take first watch."

Chen rose and scrambled up the narrow opening of the foxhole, gesturing Neil to follow him.

=======================================================================================================================================

"We need to talk."

"We will talk when I decide it's your turn!" Hammond snapped at his subordinate. Barrows had always had a habit of overreaching his position, which The General had begrudgingly allowed in recognition of the man's usefulness. However, today was not the day to test his patience.

"They won't come to you, that much is obvious."

Hammond's smile was cruel, as he marched almost casually over to where Abigail lay and dragged her to her feet by her hair. Pinning her against the wall, he clasped a huge hand around her throat, and began to squeeze.

"I hope you're bluffing, or else you're incredibly stupid." Hammond hissed at her. "Your friends will come to me. They are starving, they are cold, and they have nowhere to run. As soon as I present an opportunity to them, they will have no choice but to take it. Rescuing you will be nothing more than the convenient excuse they need to abandon their duty for the sake of their honour."

His leer was disgusting, as he watched her try in vain to struggle.

"You're right about one thing though..." he whispered in her ear. "I am proving a point. You take pride in your petty victories, at thumbing your nose at me, but you achieve nothing. You think you've seen the worst of it, out here at the end of the world, but you are all ignorant children to resist. Something is coming for you that you cannot possibly understand, but before it does, I will teach you all the true nature of the world you'll soon be leaving. This is the world! My hand at your throat, your failing strength, these are the fundamentals. As long as I am stronger than you, and faster than you, I can snuff out everything that you are!"

His grip was beginning to leave welts in the young woman's neck.

"Can you feel it Abigail? Can you feel the lights going out? If there are any words you think can undermine this power, then speak them now. Go on, speak with the last of your breath!"

====================================================================================================================================

"Sir, what's the AO like?"

"Looks like we won't know until we get down there," Yu told him "So stay sharp."

As they got closer to the oasis, the co-pilot turned to Selena.

"Ms Hernandez. There appears to be a small village on the south bank. We can land there."

"Contacts?" Selena asked

"A few dozen on the thermal cameras. Can't tell if they're military. No SAM signatures detected though."

"You hear that back there?" Selena called over her shoulder.

"Roger that." Yu replied "Could be hostile, but could have intel on these coordinates of ours too. Try a fly-past. If anyone starts shooting we'll know how to play this."

A minute later, The VTOL buzzed low over the village, It's engines churning up the surface of the lake.

"Well, they know we're here now." The co-pilot announced. "There's increased activity down there, but it doesn't look like a defensive formation, and no-one's hailing us. Suspect contacts are civilian."

"Doesn't mean they'll take kindly to us sitting our ass down on their turf." Yu muttered, before raising his voice. "Pilot! Drop us above the shoreline, we'll secure an LZ.

Ready to put these suits though their paces?" he asked Lewis and Aggie. "Stay sharp, but don't fire unless you're fired upon. We don't want to scare these people off unless we have to."

Abigail could see the cruel smile that lay on Hammond's face as with a casual stride made his way to her before pulling Abigail to her feet by her ponytail making her wince. Hammond then pinned her to the wall with one arm before clasping down hard on her throat with the other hand, she wanted to cough and scream, but the pressure on her windpipe made it impossible. Her eyes showed no discernible emotion besides pain.

"I hope you're bluffing, or else you're incredibly stupid." Hammond hissed as he started talking.

"Your friends will come to me. They are starving, they are cold, and they have nowhere to run. As soon as I present an opportunity to them, they will have no choice but to take it. Rescuing you will be nothing more than the convenient excuse they need to abandon their duty for the sake of their honour." Abigail desperately tried to struggle against the weight of Hammond, but all that earned her was a leering gaze from Hammond, and a couple of sniggers from the guards.

"You're right about one thing though..." Hammond said with nothing nut a whisper into her ear. "I am proving a point. You take pride in your petty victories, at thumbing your nose at me, but you achieve nothing. You think you've seen the worst of it, out here at the end of the world, but you are all ignorant children to resist. My hand at your throat, your failing strength, these are the fundamentals. As long as I am stronger than you, and faster than you, I can snuff out everything that you are!"

Out from the corner of her eye, Abigail could see faint welts beginning to form on her neck.

"Can you feel it Abigail? Can you feel the lights going out? If there are any words you think can undermine this power, then speak them now. Go on, speak with the last of your breath!"

Abigail could feel herself becoming rather faint as the lack of oxygen getting to her brain making it difficult to think straight. Before she blacked out completely however, she did manage one final remark.

[sub]"Why did they abandon you?"[/sub]

Abigail flopped to the ground like a ragdoll when Hammond released her, but she was still breathing. Breathing heavily himself, Hammond turned the the guards in the room.

"Keep working on her." he ordered, before marching out of the room. "Barrows, with me." he said as he exited the cell.

"You wanted to talk..." he continued, as the two travelled through the corridors of the cell block. "Talk."

======================================================================================================================================

The VTOL hovered 40 feet above the beach as its rear exit opened. Stepping out onto the ramp, Yu readied his battle rifle and scanned the terrain below, before casually stepping off the edge. As he began to fall, the wingsuit opened up, the translucent, artificial membrane stretching between spindly carbon fingers. His jump-jets pulsed at low power, and he glided slowly to the ground.

'This isn't right.' he thought, as his infra-red vision scanned his surroundings. Villagers were emerging from the structures ahead in greater numbers. There were over two-dozen on the beach already, all approaching him and the aircraft with a mixture of excitement and apprehension, some of them pointing and whispering feverishly to each-other.

If Yu didn't know any better, he'd say that they were expected. He kept his rifle at the ready.

There was something unusual about the buildings as well. They were prefabricated, and definitely not local. Walking purposefully over to one of the structures further up the beach, silently daring anyone of the crowd to get in his way. There was an old, faded logo painted on the wall, and Yu took a closer look at it.

"Selena, you need to get down here." he radioed in. "Aggie, I want you covering the lady at all times, understand?"

'Well, at least now we can be pretty sure we're in the right place.'

====================================================================================================================================

The Talon's jeep pulled up opposite an expensive villa, near the top of the slope. Two of her guards were there to receive them.

"My Lady." one said as they bowed "You'll find everything as you commanded. The satellite link is already set up."

"Thank you." The Talon replied "I will need my privacy for the next hour or so."

"Of course, My Lady." the two guards saluted and left her presence.

Smiling, The Talon turned to Nahla.

"We'll speak later." she told her "I'm the mean-time, I think you know what you need to do."

She stroked a lock of Nahla's hair between her fingers, before leaning in for a delicate kiss.

"I'll see you soon."

====================================================================================================================================

As Chen and Neil left, Felix shifted over to Wickers and Tucker.

"Um, hello." he said, with an awkward courtesy. They were all on the same side now, and Felix had never been out to cause trouble for the Wardens in the first place. However, the remnants of his Inmate uniform still felt uncomfortable in the presence of these people.

The pair dropped in after Yu, scanning the surroundings carefully. Aggie landed with a much louder thud compared to Lewis. It was clear that Aggie was having a bit of fun in her suit while Lewis was treading on the side of caution. He knew of his suit's cloaking abilities but he didn't want to use it just yet in case anyone was observing them from a far. Aggie was already putting the suit through its paces by the time Yu spoke up.

"Aggie, I want you covering the lady at all times, understand?"

"Now who would be mean enough to pick on girls?" Aggie said sarcastically as she scanned the horizon once more or rather the villagers emerging from the buildings nearby. She had seen enough action in the north to know something was amiss but she couldn't put her finger on it. Lewis skirted around them, wanting to keep his distance until they would make contact with any enemies. He had a rough plan in his head but he was mostly relying on past training although this suit certainly made things easier.

"Something's off about this place..." Lewis said to Yu as he surveyed the area nearby but keeping himself ready.

"... Neil and I will take first watch."

Neil heeded Chen's summons and followed him into the foxhole. Once inside, he sat down and rested the back of his head against the wall, wishing he had a cigarette on him. He kept his eyes ahead, not bothering to look at Chen.

"You want to say something," the sniper finally said, splitting the silence between. "What is it?"

************************************************************************************************************************************************

"In the mean-time, I think you know what you need to do."

"Yes, ma'am," Nahla said in a weary tone.

Once Talon was gone, Nahla went looking for Riley. It didn't take her long to find him.

Odin's hard to miss.

The massive wolf was sitting close to one of the trucks, watching Riley as he helped unload cargo from the back. Nahla stood nearby, waiting for him to finish. She made sure to show off a small smile just in case he spotted her.

"Mmm. Yeah?"

Judah came to Lucia's side. "Sit," the older woman commanded, patting the empty space on the log beside her. "You looked... lonely. Figured you could use some company."

Then she heard Samuel call out her name from across the fire before he started his approach.

"Damn, he works fast," Lucia whispered under her breath. She grinned and looked to her companion. "I can't remember the last time I've been with a man. Seems like it was in a previous life, honestly. People get up to a lot of mischief like that around here? 'Make love, not war' and all that?"

Korovitch nodded to Chen as the other departed, and sat down against the wall. The consistent damp and cold underground was starting to make his joints ache in a way he wasn't familiar with. He felt tired.

Sighing, he began to wonder exactly when it was that he had started to become old.

===================================================================

"Sir, is that the last crate?"

"Aye," Riley replied, passing it down before jumping to the ground and walking away from the truck, deaf to the soldier's thanks. He'd spotted Nahla almost as soon as she'd arrived, and had started working faster in response.

"Hey Nahla," he said. He wasn't quite sure how to act. His mind was full of questions. She hadn't come back that night, and he hadn't slept. Then suddenly she seemed to have all but vanished, suddenly more busy than ever. he'd heard one of a crowd of songbird soldiers mention her amid peals of laughter, but when they had noticed Riley watching, they had all fallen silent.

Still, he trusted her, didn't he?

He decided to act as normal as he could manage. A small part of the back of his mind knew what this felt like, but surely that was just paranoia.

"Shit, where've you been?" he said, putting on a grin. "I feel like I've aged visibly since I last saw you." Biting the metaphorical bullet, he leaned in to kiss her.

============================================

"Um, hello."

Wickers and Tucker glanced at each other. It was Wickers who spoke first. "Now then, kid. What's up?"
