I haven't played the prequel. Does that matter?
You can get a version of Dreamfall that has the first game bundled with it. It's an excellent game that should be played anyway, and not just to make a bit more sense of the apparently inferior sequel. I'd recommend that you play them in order anyway, as I'd imagine the attachment you develop with April (which you WILL develop, imo she is one of the most relatable characters in videogame history) would make her role in the sequel even more meaningful to you. Be warned that the company take a very long time to make sequels, so you'll be waiting quite a while for the storyline's conclusion. I haven't played Dreamfall yet, but The Longest Journey was an utterly sublime game, certainly my favourite out of the few p&click games I've played.

Suprised nobody's mentioned Gabriel Knight yet, as that's a series that tends to be very well regarded. Haven't played it myself, I'm quite a newcomer to the old adventure game scene.

No Broken Sword fans here either? I really enjoyed the first two (the only ones I have played). Very entertaining, globe-trotting games; and you pick up bits of historical trivia in the process.

I liked the original Monkey Island, and while I'm interested in playing the other games I haven't played yet, I'm more interested in what Tell-Tale will be able to do with the franchise. I loved their take on Sam&Max so it'll be interesting to see what they can do with the involvement of some of the old Lucasarts team.

I feel a bit out of place in this thread, as I don't think my three years of exposure to the genre really allows me to count as 'reminiscing' about the games I've played, no matter how old they are.

Actually the adventure game that made a bigger impact on me than Myst was The 7th Guest. The first time I saw that game I was pretty sure the future had arrived.
Same here. CD-ROM baby! Pretty incredible looking back; fifteen something years has really changed the way I think about games.

I've seen most of my fondly remembered adventure games in this thread; from Monkey Island to Dreamfall via Grim Fandango and Beneath A Steel Sky.

I'd like to mention The Dig (LucasArts), Future Wars (Delphine) and Cruise For A Corpse (Delphine). You old timers might recognize that all but Dreamfall and Grim Fandango were available for the Amiga. That's not a coincidence, for me the point-and-click adventure era kind of ended with the Amiga; with a few notable exceptions. Also, I did hold out till '97 before buying a shiny new Pentium II ....

PS: BTW, if you haven't played it there's a playable demo of The Last Express here [http://lastexpress.markmoran.net/demo.html].

If I had to recommend anything it'd be to simply play the first game only.
The second installment had a rich storyline but the gameplay was severely lacking, especially the combat (who the f*ck thought that was a good idea?).

I feel like I missed out on a great era.
The only adventure games I played are Putt-Putt, Jump Start 3rd Grade, Carmen Sandiego, The Journeyman Project. and the Myst Series.

I never did well in Myst. Probably because of my increadibly short attention span and impaitence. Journeyman was fun though. To bad my disk snapped.

Legend of Kyrandia, Shannara, Myst, Phoenix Wright....mostly Kyrandia. Except the fire berry maze...stupid caves.
