I'm going to give credit to Sugimori for not just piling two Magnetons together and actually bothing to come up with a new design.
I actually prefer Rhydon to Rhyperior, thankfully eviolite makes him a fair choice. Rhyperior's still really cool, though, he's probably a bit of a marmite design.
Well according to Bulbapedia, Electabuzz is based on a Japanese oni that was a horned ogre that wore tiger skin and he was also sometimes depicted as the god of lightning and thunder.
Magmar on the other hand, is based on the counterpart of Electabuzz or something along those lines.

Actually, I was wrong about the eeveelution thing. I did train one in Platinum...ironically enough, it was Glaceon. Probably a boring experience considering I didn't remember it fondly...or barely even at all. Elemental foxes just don't float my boat.
I like the idea that they put into this evolution. Has to learn a certain move and it will evolve, what's even cool about is that the move is called Ancient Power and Mamoswine looks like a Mammoth which just makes the whole idea even more awesome.
Well fucking shit, I got ninjaed. Even worse, I got a Pokémon which hasn't been in the anime and probably never will be.
