Ok so lets say the hero comes to my throne room, or whatever. The doors lock, and the windows barred shut.. speakers raise from the floors and fall from the ceiling. And a screen drops down. and this is what plays on the screen and all the speakers....

Mystical artifact? A perfect (but powerless) replica filled with high explosives. It detonates when 'activated'.

Princess/Romantic interest? Their corpse.

Either way, I would also be there. Waiting for them to find the fake artifact/body. And while they're grieving/laying singed on the floor, I shoot them. Twice in the head, thrice in the chest. Their body would then be incinerated, and no evidence would remain of their even arriving.

Problem solved, world is mine, moving on.
