The hero has been through many hardships, maybe a friend has died during the adventure, maybe they had to kill when they vowed never to take a life etc... Finally the hero arrives panting, battered, and exhausted at the chamber where the sacred artifact/princess/ultimate sword etc.. is and in your genius you have left him something else, like a nice cup of pudding. Yummo.

I have read that list, however this is inspired by always finding some useless snack in the drawer where something I have saved for later should've been... oh, the rage.
