"Just one. Me and Nic found it. Nice place. People seemed... different."
As they reached the street, she continued.
"I think maybe people were purer souls. They were just kinder, more honest. The world spun on and on and it seemed smoother."
She approached a building." If this map is right, the first library should be on the other side of this place..." She kicked the door, breaking it off its hinges.
"When we found it, we were lost. We didn't know where we were or how to get back. We were lost and alone. We thought surely this would be a tough place to survive. But the people here welcomed us with open arms. Gave us food shelter and directions. It was paradise. We were sad to leave it."
They proceeded through the factory floor. The sun shined through the large sets of paneled windows letting in large amounts of natural light, which flooded the assembly room. Items still sat on the conveyor belts. Half completed mechanical parts, bins of screws, bolts, metal rods and assorted items.
"We always wanted to go back. But when we did..... We found a different world entirely."
The massive room could easily fit whole other buildings inside it. Her voice gave a small echo.
"The leaders failed to keep the peace. They let loose their cannons and brought their fire from the sky. Those people didn't deserve what happened to them. An entire world filled almost completely with good souls and peaceful hearts gone wrong, because the people make a simple mistake of letting those who didn't deserve to rule do so. They were deceived and angry men were given the control. They abused it. The world never recovered."
She came to a door on the far side.It was heavy and made of steel. "There should be other exits. Lets check around."
After a moment she continued. "Me and Nic felt a certain sort of grief, mixed with some guilt. We assumed bad people were there, we just underestimated them and thought they would never be able to do what they did. So we left the world as we found it. We thought we were making the right choice. To be honest, we could have stopped it and save and entire race from obliteration..."
She stopped for a moment and sat down to rest her legs. "I guess the down side to near immortality is plenty of opportunities to make mistakes." She sighed, but smiled. "Anyways..." She seemed to cheer up a little. "You probably dont want to hear some old gasbag like me ramble on. I suppo-"
She was cut off by a gunshot. She jumped up and scrambled for cover. Another shot rang out, the bullet giving a metallic ping against one of the great steel machines.
"So.. we aren't alone..."
