Above a distant plane of existence hovered a disc of colossal proportions. Atop it lay a flat world expanding infinitely; the Four Magics that had crafted this world in the beginning had rendered its landscape exotic and beautiful, yet also unnatural ? as if the world had been planned by an architect rather than weathered by time. Regardless of whether or not this was the case, it was overshadowed by a much more peculiar phenomenon - time flowed differently in this world.
Below the disc its shadow was cast over a wall of cloud - below the cloud lay the Past: a past forgotten, a history ignored. Atop the disc lay the Present, and at its centre bustled a city ruled through time. At the centre of the city, a spire shot not only into the sky, but into the future.
The city of Chicane teemed with life; everyone was working to their Suit, a system conceived in accordance with the Four Magics.
At the base of the spire stood four castles that each watched over a quadrant of the city. Each one was designed to house the royalty of each Suit, the King, Queen and Jack that governed the internal workings of Chicane at the request of their absent superiors.
Deep within one castle, the Jack of Spades steps into the throne room to witness a grisly scene. His King and Queen lie in a pool of their own charcoal blood beneath the seat of their power. A pale, imp-like creature feeds on their flesh, not bothering to turn as the Jack makes his entrance.
Horrified, he speaks out at this creature. It doesn?t respond.
He takes a step toward it and shouts again. Unabashed, it continues to ignore him.
He calls for aid, and casts a flare at the creature. The shadowy room is lit, revealing the corpses of hundreds of elite guards ? all seemingly killed by their own Clubs Magic.
The creature is distracted from its? regal feast by the flare, and turns around to face its assailant. The Jack stifles a gasp as he sees its face ? the glare of its lidless eyes, jagged lipless teeth twisted into a permanent smile, hair like barbed wire that covered its entire body, head covered by an distorted eldritch hat formerly worn by the court jester. It began giggling, growing into a crescendo that echoed hauntingly throughout the dead castle.
But it isn?t a giggle of laughter. It is one of intense pain.
It is obvious to the Jack that this was the renegade that had the Diamond Mages in such a flutter ? and yet, it was only now that he realised what it was. It was a Joker, a nigh omnipotent being capable of wielding not only all Four Magics, but the pure arcane energy at their core.
He had heard the lore ? and while he chose not to believe that this mutant proletarian could best his superiors, he would not make the mistake they made of underestimating it. He also knew that to kill a Joker is to become one ? omnipotence was something definitely not undesired, and especially not by a noble such as himself.
He knew three things: He knew he could not escape; he also knew what was at stake, and what he could gain from this victory. He also knew that a direct confrontation would mean his end ? thusly, he prepares his Spades Magic to evaporate the floor underneath the beast, killing it with the fall. It may be powerful, but its body was that of a mortal man.
It was omnipotent, but not invincible.
He hurls a bolt of ebony at its feet. The Joker, shrieking in rage, falls to its doom.
The Jack smiles, looking over the edge of the cavity he left in the throne room?s floor. No being would survive that fall ? not even a sorcerer that powerful has that kind of physical strength. And yet he felt no surge of power, no grasp of magics both impossible and taboo.
Sighing, he decides to turn back and prepare for his crowning as the new King of Spades. But when he turns, he finds himself face to face with the hideous white creature. He steps backward in fear, but that is all he manages to do. In a single fluid motion, the imp tears his torso in two ? both halves plummeting into the abyss of his own design.
Atop the spire, and 21 days into the past, four Aces witness that massacre. Their fears, realized. Many on the disc had forgotten their past, veiled by cloud. Long ago they called Misère?s bluff, deigning to unleash full scale war on the world below. They expected its hand to be weaker than theirs, and as such they had played safely and evasively.
But now, 21 days into the future, Misère would play a Joker. And they knew that there was one reason and one reason alone for forging a creature capable of wielding raw magic.
It was playing to win.
The Ace of Diamonds had already begun thinking, consulting with the hive mind to calculate every possibility. Within seconds, she had concluded that there was only one option to pursue. Standing up, she revealed her intent to the other three Suits.
?As you are all no doubt aware, our situation is dire. A Joker has been played, and no one on this world can stop it. 21 days into the future it will arrive. 21 days we have to prepare for our inevitable doom.?
She paused, commanding their full attention. ?We have no choice but the last resort. I have already advised you all of my intentions should a Joker be played. If we wish to win, we have to cheat.?
The Ace of Clubs was furious. He knew exactly what Diamonds was asking him to do, and objected accordingly. There was no way, not even in the face of annihilation, that he would condone nor support such a tragic abuse of the Clubs? code of honour. The Aces of Hearts and Spades, meanwhile, watched this conflict intently.
?No matter,? Diamonds replied, ?This is a task to be undertaken by all of us, not merely the military. If I cannot remind you of the souls at stake, then I can at least call upon the aid of my fellow Suits.?
Hearts was in hysterics. ?Clubs! The Joker is a creature not even your army can defeat! And all those lives at stake ? do we want to leave so many innocents as a feast for that? that thing? for your stupid code of honour? Wouldn?t it be more honourable to save us all??
Spades was less enthusiastic ? he was more worried about a revolution by his workers after the demolition of social order ? but he was nonetheless willing to avenge his people. ?Hearts is right. We have bigger things to deal with than the innocent, but that monster will only cause problems if we?re going to restore order to Chicane. I respect your code, but Misère has gone too far in demanding our civilisation as a sacrifice - summoning a Joker to make example of us. If it?s not playing by the rules, then neither should we.?
Knowing that it was cornered, Clubs backed down. ?Very well, we shall carry out your plan. But know that I will unleash the full fury of the Clubs elite regardless. And if Misère?s puppet threatens my military directly, I will not back down.?
Diamonds sighed. She knew Clubs may become a liability in the future, but she had accounted for this. ?Very well then, you all have your duties. We require Champions from beyond this world, unaffected by the rules and limitations of the Four Magics. Each Suit will summon several, and we will have them compete. This will both condition them for the battle to come, and to understand the mechanics of our world so they may use it to their advantage. We begin immediately.?
And with that instruction, the four Aces began searching other worlds for their Champions. In three weeks, the wheels of destruction would be set into motion. In three weeks, a war would begin.
To the veterans: no apologies for my unannounced hiatus from the Escapist, because I know that my absence has been unforgivable with the responsibilities I have. So have some RW6 to whet your appetite.
To the newcomers: Welcome! If you have any questions or enquiries, don't hesitate to drop me a line via PM.
The first four Ratings Wars were based on combat within set arenas, where your character can not only interact with it but also use it to determine their opponents? fate. Will they surrender, will they die or will they suffer a fate much worse?
RW5's theme was Vice and the concept of the relationship between a god and its' creation; this one's focus is on an alternative look at the ideal of Socialism as portrayed in a fantastical setting - as well as toying with the idea of time as a physical (and thusly, interactive) feature of the world. Here are some important themes to acquaint yourself with if you wish:
[li]Suits: Each Suit - Spades, Hearts, Clubs and Diamonds - will play as an important motif throughout the game. They are four quadrants of a governmental system designed to make the population of Chicane efficient, by having people master a certain magic and pursue a career that is, well, suited to them. A short synopsis of the general workings of the Suit system are spoilered below; the rest you may ask for. If I decline to answer your question, it will be answered as the game progresses. remember that your character is as alien to this world as you are.
Your character will be chosen by an Ace to represent them; it's up to you to decide which Suit best suits your character - inform me on a stat sheet like the one below. If there is too much density within a certain Suit, I will rearrange them to make for a more even game. I will ask you for your permission and give you my explanation if such an event happens.[/li]
[li]The Joker: This is the first time in Ratings War history that there will be a clear-cut villain in the story. The Joker will arrive in 3 weeks to slaughter the royal families, starting with the Spades. What is its' motive? Who or what is it? And how do you go about stopping what is effectively a god in a world ruled by these magical rules? You will find out these answers as the story goes on - all we know for now is that should someone kill a Joker, it is believed that they shall inherit their cosmic powers. In a world where even the Aces fear such a being; he who has the power, has the world.[/li]
[li]Punctuality. Many a round has been made arduous by judges taking their time to submit their vote. I will warn you when the judging must commence, but it?s up to you to get that verdict in by (at most) 2 days after the last entry is posted.[/li]
[li]Criticism. I want to have a short critique of the pieces you judge sent to me with the verdict so I can send it as a PM to the contestant in question. This helps the contestants improve their works and lets them know that we?ve given their works the thought they deserve to make this game worth playing. I know for a fact that I learned a lot by competing in these things, so we should help others to as well.[/li]
[li]Verdict. Two adjudicators will decide the victor. If there is a conflict in the votes, then I shall be the deciding factor. I will write my critiques for every entry regardless of whether I get my say or not.[/li]
For the contestants, here are some tips to make your judges smile favourably upon your character:
[li]Be the underdog. Overpowered characters have won The Ratings War before (See RWII: Set The World On Fire [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.77172-The-Ratings-War-II-Set-the-World-on-Fire?page=1], testament to Khedive Rex?s incredible writing) but are far harder to write. The reason for this is because to make a piece of work exciting you first need to have a struggle for the character to overcome. You have free reign over the character you create but be advised that giving your character, say, time control may be a little difficult to write interestingly and believably. Possible, but difficult all the same.[/li]
[li]Depth. We don?t just want to see how the fights impact our heroes physically, we want something emotional as well. Don?t hesitate to discuss your characters? flaws, vices, fears or past with us through your works, we want to know all about them. Give us a reason to want to root for you, or at least give us a reason for your characters? motivations.[/li]
[li]Discussion. I've had PM conversations with people I was competing against all the time. In getting to know the man behind the character you can better understand the character itself. Discussing your characters and how they would react to each other could also help. Remember that you are writing another person?s character as well as your own, so you want to be as close to the money as you can be.[/li]
Be advised, however, that there is a certain punctuality involved with this game, so one round should go for no more than 2 weeks. Failure to submit your entry beyond two weeks after the date the round is announced will be immediately considered a forfeit unless a contestant requests an extension at least 3 days before the deadline.
As well as this, please post a stat sheet of your character in the fields provided below:
You have two weeks to make a character submission. Former players, or players have shown interest in the Ratings War when RW5 was already underway will be sent a PM soon.
That's it from me; if you have any questions or qualms, let me know and I will get back to you ASAP.
For discussion during or between rounds of RW6, here is a new group to discuss things in [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Ratings-War]. If you have any input or ideas for the next Ratings War, please feel free to discuss it here as well - I'm always open to new ideas, and I think it better to discuss where this game is headed outside the game itself.

[HEADING=1]THE RATINGS WAR VI: ACES HIGH[/HEADING]
Yes, that's right people. The Duke Nukem Forever of RPs is back, but unlike that game, this one won't be disappointing.
[HEADING=2]The Game[/HEADING]
Put specifically, you as the writer will craft an original character to fight against others? in the form of a short story, where your character is written as the victor. Judges will then adjudicate the two competing submissions and vote for the one that shall progress through to the next round. Rinse and repeat until there is one victor; the Champion of The Ratings War.From The Sorrow said:Well, this isn't your standard RP. This is an OCBT (Original Character Battle Tournament). The rules of these are as follows:
1) You create a character.
2) You and your opponent each depict your character defeating theirs.
3) Whoever has the most entertaining entry wins.
This [http://thecolosseum.deviantart.com/journal/14111731/] is an OCBT done with art.
Most characters are allowed, as long as they are not fancharacters or Mary-Sues. The stronger they are, the more entertaining your opponent's underdog victory will be. Monsters, demons, aliens, elementals, humans, almost anything is allowed.
The first four Ratings Wars were based on combat within set arenas, where your character can not only interact with it but also use it to determine their opponents? fate. Will they surrender, will they die or will they suffer a fate much worse?

A short synopsis of the general workings of the Suit system are spoilered below; the rest you may ask for. If I decline to answer your question, it will be answered as the game progresses. remember that your character is as alien to this world as you are.
The Suit of Spades was the working class; proletarians that toiled in mines, agriculture and industry. Contrary to the nature of their occupation, they were considered social equals to the other, more esteemed Suits. Spades Magic is used to build and refine, as well as power the various machinery required to complete their tasks.
The Suit of Hearts was more inclined to work amongst its citizens ? politicians, journalists and merchants were amongst their professions. For this reason Hearts has grown to become an extremely influential part of Chicane society. Hearts Magic is built around coercion through politics and custom.
The Suit of Clubs were enforcers with a high honour code ? security, military and authority is their specialty and as such they govern with discipline and an iron fist. Clubs Magic is built around destruction, and thusly citizens of this Suit are heavily conditioned toward control. In many ways, they are stripped of free will in favour of unquestioningly enforcing The Rules.
The Suit of Diamonds is purely academic, and thusly they were tasked with theoretical and scholarly tasks. Scientists, doctors and teachers were closely tied to this suit, as their mental aptitude was unmatched. Diamonds Magic is built around aptitude and the psyche ? telepathy is used to the extent that their society has developed a hive mind at its very core, and as such all share the same knowledge and desire to expand it.
All suits have their focus, but some apply their skills by working amongst other suits. For example, Hearts superintendents may motivate the Spades workers or conduct espionage for the Clubs military. Clubs Soldiers may act as enforcers for the Spades workers in the event of a riot or a strike, or bodyguards for Hearts businessmen. Spades, thanks to their effective knowledge and control over the land through Spades Magic, may also act as a smaller but not unimportant section of the Clubs military for tactical purposes. Diamonds keep to themselves as they are all connected to the same hive mind ? they do have individuals stationed in various enterprises and establishments partly to advise, but mostly to monitor the other Suits and events occurring within the walls of Chicane.
All suits have a single Decimator, soldiers that have mastered combat within their respective suit. They are the ultimate warriors, and act as generals of the Clubs military.
