So we just recieved our second dreadful budget in two years in Ireland.

Nurses, police, the entire public sector is facing huge pay cuts. The Gardai (that's our police force) are threatening to go on strike and there's talk of riots and social discord.

All in a country that a few years ago was apparently the third wealthiest in the world.

Of course, our polititians still remain some of the highest paid scumbags out there, our prime minister earns more than the British and German leaders.

Have any Escapist members lost jobs or been affected by the global recession?

Nope. I sell booze, people aren't going to stop drinking anytime soon.
You too, huh? It's a great gig. I work for a municipal liquor store, so it's technically a government job too.

I lost my job because of it...
Same here. Laid off in October
Last may for me, used to be a welder until they axed the whole department I worked in. So I went back to school to try and I'm trying to start all over.

There's been a price hike on beer every year for the last ten here, and this year they made it cheaper to try to get people back in the pubs.

And this in Ireland... we're renowned for our drinking.

Granted, the recession hit some of us sooner than others. I've been out of work since 2003, going to school instead.

Nope. Dad's one of the best at his buisness so he wouldn't get laid off and there is always demand for a 15 year old in an average shopping centre.

That's awesome...I work behind a bar. It's alright, although whenever they ask me to sign something stating that I understand the laws I'm always slightly horrified by what it says. £2000 fines for serving a minor...yeesh.

Ha...the English aren't exactly conservative with their drinking either. The prices go up all the time, the customers moan about it...but end up drinking 8 pints anyway.

We do a share a very similar binge drinking culture... I've seen Booze Britain and it looks just like a night out in Ireland too.
